Punt returner?

I think we can all agree that Kiewan didn't get the job done last year and that the Bengals will likely be looking for a guy who can return punts in the draft, but what position, what round and who do you like?

1. What position? It would be nice if the guy we draft also has at least some potential to contribute at another position (like Tab at WR). The most likely would be CB. We could really use some depth there and CBs are usually pretty good at punt return. Also, WR would be possible. If KWash isn't back or if Henry is suspended, this would become an even better fit. Lastly, I think there is a small chance that we could draft a RB to replace Watson and return punts.

2. What round? Ideally, we could get somebody on the second day. However, if it is the right guy, I could see as high as round three.

3. What guy? Here are some of the guys that would be possibilities, but I would appreciate more names added to the mix if anyone knows of other guys because I really don't know of many:

Devin Hester (Can he play any other position?)
Maurice Drew (Will he go too high? Watson coming back?)
Will Blackmon (Could go too high, but seems like he could make an impact at CB or WR also)

Ideally, I think we wouldn't want to spend more than a 5-7th on a guy like that...But if they are sold on Blackmon, he has tons of upside to be a very good STer, and may well develop into a starter in a couple of years.

I also like Drew...And I think he would be worth a 3rd rounder...But you better be positive of a guy's impact if you're going to reach that high.

It sounds like they're interviewing a couple of guys like that (Hester, etc.), so it should be interesting to watch it play out in the draft.

I think a second or third round pick is likely to be used on a guy that can play corner and special teams. Devin Hester, Will Blackmon, Charles Gordon, and Danieal Manning are all guys that should be around in the second/third round area that can make an immediate impact on defense and special teams.

Here are their profiles:

Will Blackmon, Boston College
Charles Gordon, Kansas
Danieal Manning, Abilene Christian

Good call...I think we've already schedules interviews with 3 of the 4, have we not?

There are alot of ways to build overall team speed and talent...Taking a player like that is certainly one of them, and those kinds of guys are always around on the rosters of winning teams.

I want Hester, he reminds me of Deion Sanders returning punts. He needs alot work on his technique if he is going to play corner, but we have some of the best secondary coaches in the business. Hester could be the steal of the draft has he as game changing abilities.

This Manning guy sounds like a option, as is Blackmon he played at CB, but was working out with the wr's at the combine. Whatever the case if it's someone we draft or sign in FA, we need to upgrade at PR as Kiewan was auditioning for "Dancing with the Stars" when he was supposed to be getting up field. <_<

This guy, Cletis Gordon, is definitely worth a look-see.

Gordon went to Jackson State, the same school that the great Walter Payton attended, and he made huge play after huge play. Similar to Hester, Gordon doesn't really have a set position besides returner, but with him on the roster Tab Perry could concentrate more on being a better wr. He would be a steal in the 6th or 7th round, an absolute steal...

yep yep, I have him in my sig.

I also like Willie Reid from Floirda State, although I don't see him making it out of the 5th round.

Antonio Cromartie, CB, FSU. His CB skills are a little raw since he only played two seasons, but he could earn his keep returning punts for a year while he learns some cover skills.

If he is healing properly then I wouldn't mind taking him at 24. That would be quite a stretch, though. I see him as a second rounder not because of his injury, but because of his lack of experience. He only played two years, and he wasn't even a starter for all that time. I'm pretty sure he will be gone by the time we pick in the second.

Did Cromartie return punts before he was injured? He's pretty big for a punt returner.

The way certain players are rising and sticking, I think he is bound for the 2nd or 3rd (depending on his injury).

WR or CB who can really run, and can be developed into a player (or starter for CB eventually) at his "native" position. I think Hester would be me preferred choice, but I don't know if he will last long enough for me to really WANT to take HIM at THAT SPOT (3rd for sure, maybe 2, but definitely NOT in 1).

I was basing my comment on something I read on draftblitz.com

- Cromartie rivals Jimmy Williams as the top overall corner in the 2006 draft, and has the same elite size as Williams. With the advent of the bigger wide receiver in the NFL, teams are always looking for a bigger corner who can move fluidly, support the run, and not be a liability in pass coverage. Cromartie meets all of these requirements and then some. Is a superb tackler, but the best part of his game is his awareness of where he is on the field, where he needs to be to make a play on the ball, and where to position his body so as to cut off most throws. Cromartie is an excellent athlete who has a track background both in high school and at FSU, and he has the hands of a receiver, which even led to FSU utilizing him there in the spring. Cromartie is a big play waiting to happen both as a CB (4 ints in 2004 - 1 int. return for a TD; fumble return for a TD) and in the return game where he was in the top-5 in the ACC in both kickoff and punt return yards. He has surprisingly fluid hips for a corner of his size, and is strong in both zone and man coverage.

However when I tried to look up his stats I couldn't find where he ever returned a single punt for FSU. So the draftblitz comment is a mistake, but here are his Kick Return numbers:

2003 24 ret 568 yds. 23.7 avg
2004 19 ret 435 yds. 22.9 avg

Nothing really special, but he has shown great open field running in returning 2 ints and a fumble for TDs.

Thanks for looking that up. I was just curious because big guys like that (Tab Perry included) usually aren't great punt returners because there is so much of them to hit.

I must admit that Cromartie is an intriguing prospect and I would not be disappointed if we took him in the first round.
