Patriot blasts 'Vanderjerk'
Harrison mad after Colts kicker's 'ripe for picking' comment

By Howard Ulman
The Associated Press

FOXBORO, Mass. - Mike Vanderjagt's mouth is still causing trouble, even though he's criticizing his opponents and not his coach and quarterback.

On Tuesday, New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison fired back at the Indianapolis kicker.

"He has to be a jerk - Vanderjerk," Harrison said.

Many of Harrison's teammates brushed off Vanderjagt's remark, made after Indianapolis dominated Denver 49-24 in the first round of the AFC playoffs. Speaking about the Patriots, he said, "I think they're ripe for the picking" in Sunday's playoff matchup with the Colts.

Vanderjagt also said on WISH-TV in Indianapolis, "I think they're not as good as the beginning of the year and not as good as last year."

Those comments stirred little controversy in Indianapolis, where his outspoken nature is well known. That's a contrast to his comments two years ago when he said after the Super Bowl that Peyton Manning should show more emotion and coach Tony Dungy is too mild-mannered.

Manning then called Vanderjagt an "idiot kicker" and Dungy said Vanderjagt should have come to him with his complaints instead of airing them on TV. Manning and Vanderjagt later apologized to each other, and Vanderjagt met with Dungy.

Now Vanderjagt has provided material coach Bill Belichick might use to generate extra motivation for a team seeking its third Super Bowl title in four years.

But quarterback Tom Brady didn't think Vanderjagt's words carried much weight.

"I mean he's just talking, you know?" Brady said. "It's a kicker talking."

Adam Vinatieri, the Patriots' kicker, was not talking.

"I try to just do my job on the field, and I guess it's better to not be heard, or seen maybe," Vinatieri said.

i think espm and everyone has blown this crap way out of proportion, the media is ridiculous, everything is a three ring circus, everythnig he was was true, they got beat by MIAMI for crying out loud, they arent as good as last year, thier defense is GONE, brady is making some bad decisions, they are RIPE for the pickin, they are playing more sloppy and about to play the most ferocious offensive team in the NFL with none of thier starting DB's.

i hope leon fumbles with the game tied at the goal line and indy drives and vanderjaqt kicks the game winning field goal so they all can kiss my ass.

Vanderjagt is 100% correct.

Media is blowing this way out of proportion.

I read what actually happened was Vanderjagt was being interviewed on a local sports who, and the guy asking questions kept asking him what he thought of the upcoming game, and Vanderjagt kept dodging the question, but I guess finally decided to answer it.

What the hell is he supposed to say?

"The patriots defense is absolutely amazing, I don't see Peyton being very successful."

Give me a break.

I don't see the problem either...analysts say those kind of things on a weekly basis...what did they expect him to say, "Oh, we don't stand a chance against them"...sounded like a player who was confident and getting pumped up to play the game

This has been proven time and time again...that some people are idiots in this world

he said that they'd have to play hard and that he "thought" they'd win.

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! you all are right, the media blows it so out of proportion and then talks about they blow it out of proportion

right or wrong in what he said, it's pretty stupid to throw an opponent a bone like that... especially when it's a kicker who's about to make life more difficult for his teamates. his comments not only serve as inspiration for the pats, but act as gasoline on the fire for the pats fans. i just don't think you do that kind of thing to a team with a nasty habit of beating you.

Vanderjerk is an idoit. He's not going to make a single tackle against NE so for him to talk shit is crazy. The NFL Network has a show called called Point After: Sounds of the Game were they show highlights and what the coaches say to the teams after the game. Dungy specifically told the team not to make any statements to the press about the up-coming game. But isn't Vanderjerk the same guy who insulted Peyton and Dungy, missed two field goals in the playoffs last year and missed a field goal this year against the Pats? For a guy with his history and the fact that all he does is kick the ball, he should know by now to shut the fuck up.

On a side note, how about NE leaving the field uncovered during the snow and rain in hopes of slowing down the Colts offense. I hope it works, it should be a grind it out game, Corey vs. Edge. I'll take Edge and Peyton's play-action to win this one.

My only question is "WHY?" WHY give your opponent (especially given the tension between these two teams) ANY extra motivation to play even harder to try and beat you? It's like Mongo said above; it is UNWISE to give the PAtriots locker-room motivational fodder.
Not to mention that it's pretty unprofessional and disrespectful not only to the other team but to your teammates as well.
When questioned about an upcoming opponent, he SHOULD have said something fairly vanilla and PC like "Well, they're a great team, but so are we, and I anticipate a hard-fought battle for the AFC title." Or something.
Like Manning once said about vanderjagt: "Idiot kicker"

On a side note, this pisses ME off because I want the Colts to beat Dillon's team quite badly, partly because I'm sick of the Patriots and personally dislike Dillon, and partly because I'm rooting for Peyton to succeed in the playoffs to cement his place in history and not be another Marino with a gazillion yards and no ring.
V-Jerkoff just made the Colts job a little harder...his teammates should tie him up, shave his ballsack wih mace and a rusty razor, then dump rubbing alcohol on his genitalia as punishment for his foolishness. Now THAT would be a media story worth reporting! :D
