I'd love to see them make their way up to 12th in scoring. That would give some respectability to the numbers.

The 12th ranked Defense, at the moment, in scoring (Raiders) is allowing 19.9 points a game.
If the Bengals allow an average of 17 points a game their next 5 games,
they would finish the season allowing 19.9 (19.875 to be exact) points a game.

They play the 24th ranked Offense, 9th in scoring, averaging 22.6 points a game (Ravens),
the 32nd ranked Offense, and 32nd in scoring, averaging 12 points a game (Raiders), the 3rd ranked Offense,
and 3rd in scoring, averaging 28 points a game (Colts), the 21st ranked Offense, 24th in scoring,
averaging 17.7 points a game (Broncos) and the 6th ranked Offense, 11th in scoring, averaging 21.7 points a game (Stealers).
Unsung Heroes: Leading resurgences
By Pat Kirwan
NFL.com Senior Analyst

(Editor's note: For nine years, I have written the Unsung Heroes column during the season to bring attention to the people behind the scenes that help make some of the extraordinary things happen in the NFL on any given weekend. At the end of the year, the Unsung Hero of the Year is presented a trophy made in the name of Chip Myers, a longtime NFL assistant coach and former player who passed away just days after he was elevated to his first coordinator's position with the Minnesota Vikings. Chip was well respected by everyone in the coaching ranks and embodied all the virtues assistant coaches need to be successful. He was humble, a good teacher, a loyal friend and a tireless worker.)

(Nov. 27, 2006) -- It was one thing for the Ravens defense to pitch another shutout. They started the season blanking the Bucs and now have two goose eggs in the scoring column. But for the 32nd-ranked defense in Cincinnati to hold division opponent, Cleveland, scoreless is even more impressive. The Bengals hadn't had a shutout since 1989. Up in Buffalo, the coaches have worked hard to develop an offense, and back-to-back victories has caused everyone around the league to sit up and take notice. The New Orleans Saints is another playoff-bound team that is doing exceptional things, especially on offense.

1. Cincinnati's defensive staff: Cincinnati has given up 25 points or more four times this season and had not distinguished itself very much until Week 11, when it held the top-ranked offense, New Orleans, to 16 points. Things seemed on the upswing for defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and his staff, and it got even better this week against a Cleveland team that scored 17 points on Cincinnati the first time they met this season. The Bengals defense held the Browns to 203 total yards, nine first downs and 51 yards rushing, and recorded four sacks, four interceptions and recovered a fumble. Assistant coaches Louie Cioffi, Kevin Coyle, Jay Hays and Ricky Hunley are all deserving of a game ball for Cincinnati's first shutout in 18 years.
