Snowball War Zone

More than 2,000 people in suburban Chicago tried to break the record for the world's largest snowball fight.

The previous mark was set in Graubunden, Switzerland on January 18, 2004, when 2,473 people whipped snowballs at each other for 10 minutes.

Organizers in Wauconda, Ill., claimed victory, saying that about 3,000 people signed up for the event. Officials with the Guinness Book of World Records said they had to hold the snowball fight for at least one minute. Just to play it safe, the fight was stretched into a two-minute blitzkrieg of ball belting.

But now comes the hard part. The Guinness representatives have to count the people who participated. They will do it by studying photographs taken from a helicopter and on the ground. But the lack of an official certification has not stopped Wauconda from claiming its new record.
