Bengals sign Rich Demers

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

The Bengals this morning made two roster moves:

Signed fullback Rich Demers to a two-year contract. He was a college free agent from Massachusetts who participated this past weekend in the team's rookie mini-camp at Paul Brown Stadium.

Waived fullback Darnell Jones of Mississippi State. He had signed with the Bengals as a college free agent on April 28.

Found some info on Demers.

In 2003 (Jr. year at UMASS): "Through six games so far this year, Demers now has 263 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries, in addition to catching 14 passes for 101 yards and three scores."

That's 6.92 ypc.
What are his measurables? height? weight? 40 time?

From one of the other websites listed earlier: 6' 1", 225 lbs. which I think was from the beginning of his senior year. The next article sited mentions that he added 10 pounds since the end of the season, putting him at 255 lbs.

Also found this at http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patr...o_coughlin?pg=3

These are stressful times for University of Massachusetts fullback Rich Demers, who had a private workout for the Patriots last Monday in Amherst and a similar one for the Colts Friday morning after first catching the eye of scouts from both teams at Boston College's annual pro day March 23.

The East Boston native didn't start playing serious football until his senior year in high school and then went to UMass-Lowell, but when they dropped the sport, he landed in Amherst under the tutelage of Mark Whipple, now the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterbacks coach.

Demers has posted some remarkable test scores in his individual workouts and that has caused at least a few teams to take a second look at him, despite his not being selected to attend the annual combine workouts in Indianapolis in February. Demers has packed on more than 10 pounds since the end of the season, putting himself at 255, which these days is what pro fullbacks tend to weigh in most offenses because they are more often used as battering-ram blockers than the running fullbacks of old. But Demers, as befits the high-octane offense Whipple ran at UMass, has soft hands, which is of value for teams running the West Coast offense. Although Demers said, "I can't imagine being overlooked when I'm testing better than every other fullback in the draft," he quickly added that, "I know they look at guys from the big schools first because they played against better competition. That works against you. I'll watch some of the draft the first day, but I know I won't go then. I'll be more interested in the fifth, sixth, and seventh rounds. Just in case."

MASSACHUSETTS (March 23rd) senior fullback RICH DEMERS (#40) ran between 4.55 and 4.67 in the 40... 4.03 short shuttle... 6.93 three-cone... 33.5" vertical... 11.40 60-yard... did 39 reps of 225 pounds, but had 8 DQ'd for not locking out/back off the bench, so 31 reps officially... weighs 6006, 258 pounds... we brought up the fact that he would post some of the best workout numbers of any available fullback in a recent report... also caught passes after doing other positional drills... many thought he showed, as good hands/routes as many of the receivers working out... his results came as part of the Pro Day held at Boston College.

Sounds promising to me.
Nice insurance for JJ, if he shows up a fat, lazy, bumb again. Hopefully this will push him to stay in shape.

Demers has practice squad written all over him. Give him a year to bulk up. He has outstanding 40 times and bench reps and shuttle runs. Very athletic. Obviously, when you come from UMass it takes a while to get used to the NFL. Sounds pretty promising. It would be nice to have a FB that can run the ball.

Sounds like a solid guy to try out...Obviously, he must have shown up better than the other FB at the minicamp.

There's that competition factor again. We'll have to see how he looks compared to Easlick and JJ.

EDIT: Here's an article I found on Demers from before the draft.
