Guy checks in; Miller out

7-30-05, 11:35 a.m.

An NFL source said Saturday morning that the Bengals have reached a four-year deal with fourth-rounder Eric Ghiaciuc, leaving first-rounder David Pollack and second-rounder Odell Thurman as the only holdouts. Ghiaciuc, one of the centers of the fuure from Central Michigan, is expected at the Saturday night practice.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Saturday that backup linebacker Caleb Miller has undergone surgery "to clean out his ankle," and is expected to miss about three weeks but be ready for the regular-season opener.

Contract length may cause holdouts

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - As it was in 2004, Day 2 of Bengals training camp went on without either of the team's top two draft picks.

The Bengals practiced twice Friday without three of their top four draft picks, including first- and second-round linebackers David Pollack and Odell Thurman.

Fourth-round center Eric Ghiaciuc also continued to hold out.

"Nothing is going on, on either side," said Derlene Warmouth, a spokeswoman for Craig Domann, Ghiaciuc's agent.

The problem in all three cases is believed to be the length of contracts the Bengals want the players to accept. They signed third-round wide receiver Chris Henry to an unusually long five-year contract Thursday.

"Nothing is imminent," Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn said Friday when asked about ongoing negotiations.

The Bengals didn't sign their first two picks of 2004, running back Chris Perry and cornerback Keiwan Ratliff, until they had missed 11 and five days of camp, respectively.

Coach Marvin Lewis had little to say about the three missing rookies.

"They're not here, so we don't need to spend a lot of time talking about them, do we?" Lewis said Friday.

Pollack was the 17th overall pick. Picks Nos. 13 (offensive lineman Jamal Brown, New Orleans) and 14 (safety Tomas Davis, Carolina) signed Thursday.

IN THEIR STEAD: Landon Johnson worked as the middle linebacker in place of Thurman. Marcus Wilkins ran with the No. 1s at strong-side linebacker in place of Pollack.

INJURY STATUS: While running back Chris Perry (sports hernia) and linebacker Johnson (shoulder) were cleared and practiced Friday, several other players did not.

Among them were right tackle Willie Anderson, wide receiver Peter Warrick, defensive tackle Matthias Askew, linebacker Caleb Miller, defensive end Jonathan Fanene and linebacker Nate Webster.

Lewis declined to "speculate" about the timetables for the return of the injured players.

Miller was not at practice Friday following arthroscopic surgery on his ankle. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

CENTER OF ATTENTION: Ben Wilkerson, according to a Bengals news release, was waived after failing his physical. Then, about an hour later on Friday afternoon, the team issued a corrected release and said it had placed Wilkerson on the active/non-football injury list.

Wilkerson, a rookie free agent center from LSU, suffered a serious knee injury in October. The Bengals gave him a $20,000 signing bonus April 28. He is eligible to return to the active roster once he passes the physical.

Wilkerson had been listed as the No. 3 center behind starter Rich Braham and top backup Ghiaciuc. The team had Braham, guard Eric Steinbach, tackle Pete Lougheed and free-agent guard Dan Lynch working at center.

Braham was held out of the afternoon practice.

CAMP MOTTO: Many Bengals players and other club employees are wearing black or orange shirts with these words across the back: "Do your job."

"Whether it's taping ankles, whatever it is, just do your job," Lewis said of the shirts. "Coaching the left wing on the punt team, being (on) the left wing on the punt team, being the right gunner, setting the football ... let's make sure we do our job. Let's not wait until the bye week and have to correct it."

INTERN: Stan Davis, coordinator for the Arena Football League's top-ranked defense the past two seasons, the Las Vegas Gladiators, is working with the Bengals in training camp as part of the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship Program. A former Long Beach State defensive back, Davis was coached in college by Lewis when the Bengals coach was an assistant at the school.
