Notes: Thurman 'fine'

GEORGETOWN, Ky. _ The Bengals appeared to dodge the injury bullet a few times Monday in their last night practice of training camp here at Georgetown College. MLB Odell Thurman (knee) and FS Madieu Williams (back spasms) may not be able to play Friday night in Washington, but they don’t appear to be seriously hurt.

Thurman went down with what is thought to be a hyper extended knee when he was trying to cover running back Chris Perry in a one-on-one drill. Head coach Marvin Lewis would only say he’s fine and that he didn’t need a MRI. .

When the Bengals hold their last open practice here at camp Tuesday afternoon, the final attendance figure is estimated to be nearly double last year’s record at about 45,000.

“When this began eight years ago, I think this is what everyone thought it was going to be like,” said Georgetown College athletic director Eric Ward.

How hot are the Bengals and how high are the expectations? They shattered the record even though Lewis cut the camp a week short. They drew the largest single training camp crowd in Bengals history when about 9,200 attended the mock game, and the largest crowd to ever watch a Bengals’ practice at about 5,500.

A sparse crowd of about 600 showed up Monday night, the first day of school in Kentucky. After Tuesday’s practice, the Bengals break camp Wednesday morning following a close practice and fly out Thursday. . .

Tom Condon, one of David Pollack’s agents, said he had discussions and exchanged faxes with Bengals vice president Katie Blackburn Monday, and expected to talk to her again Monday night. But he couldn’t say if a deal was close and he didn’t want to get into specifics.

Condon declined comment on Lewis’ statements in a morning news conference in which Lewis said, “I didn’t think he would hold out this long. I think we have fought very hard to eliminate some of these kinds of actions, and it is a shame that it has occurred. We have guys who have chosen to be here, which has eliminated selfishness that occurs.”

There have been indications that the money is there, but that Pollack’s people don’t like a lot of the contract language the Bengals consider standard issue. Apparently, one of Lewis’ brain childs, the 100-percent off-season attendance clause is at issue because it is at the club’s discretion with the penalty taking part of the bonus. Apparently, Pollack also wants a written guarantee that he’ll get his option bonus if the Bengals cut him after his rookie year. The Bengals, trying to stay away from setting the precedent of guaranteed money, argue it’s obvious they won’t cut him after his rookie year.

As ESPN analyst Chris Mortensen said Monday night, “Silly stuff.” . . .

Lewis said Pro Bowl RT Willie Anderson won’t play in Washington but is on schedule to return to the field next week. . . K Shayne Graham, who hasn’t kicked with a sore groin since Friday’s pre-season opener, is probably going to be held out. So is Williams with his back spasms and probably DE Duane Clemons (foot). Definitely out are TE Reggie Kelly and LB Caleb Miller. . .DE Jonathan Fanene (hamstring) missed both practices Monday after being activated Sunday. . .
