Power Supply problem

Recommended Posts

I recently finished building my new PC and plan on giving my old one to my wife but I needed a new power supply for it. I bought the power supply from Newegg and installed it today but it will not power up. I have double checked my connections and they seem fine. All I have connected is the MB 20+4 pin, HD, DVD drive, and video card. When I turn the power on the PS I hear a little chirp and that is it. This is far from a high powered system and should power this with no problem.

Am I missing something or is it bad?

That mobo is pretty old. I don't think it takes a 20+4 connector. That 4 pin next to the 20-pin is probably the fan power. Try using just the 20-pin part of the 20+4 and there should be another 4 pin connector from the ps that will fit the 4-pin.
Otherwise your PS is probably DOA. I would grab a new one at Best Buy and try it, then take it back and exchange the one from newegg if it works.

One way to see if your PS is DOA:

Pull the plugs for the power button on the front panel (generally the two tiny green\green-white plugs).

Take a screwdriver (non-magnetic) and touch the the two power connection posts on the motherboard with the tip of the screwdriver.

If it fires up it's the case button\MOBO connection. If not it's your PS.

Old school, yo...

Thanks for the tips. I guess I should have mentioned in my first post I put an old PS in the PC and it powers fine its just not large enough to run this system full time.

Yeah the system is pretty old which is why I build my new one but it will be just fine for my wife. She doesnt game or anything like that. I will try working with the 20 pin connection when I get home today and see if that works.

Elflocko, Damn that is a crazy testing tip. I have never heard of that but will remember to use that as a tool. But Im pretty certain my power switch is working fine.

Once again thanks for the help.

Ok I got the power supply working but now I have another problem. Removing the 4 pin connector worked. I had a problem of recognizing what used to be the slave drive in my PC to the master. I worked in the BIOS and could not get it to recognize as the master. Now for whatever reason the system will not post. The CPU, video card, DVD drive all come on but my system will not post. I am not getting any warning beeps and my monitor will not come on. I guess I managed to mess up my BIOS although I dont know how. The only components that changed from when I was running the system before is the new power supply and moving the slave HD to the master.

I dont have the manual and the MSI website no longer has it or the BIOS update. I removed the CMOS battery hoping this will help but I dont feel very confident.

Sorry to be such a pain but really appreciate any help.

You should be able to go into the bios at startup to tell the machine which drive to boot from. If I'm understanding the problem correctly, that might just solve it.

Well, if it won't post then there's no way to access the BIOS.

I would try popping the battery to reset the CMOS as a first step. If that doesn't work...

That is one old fucking MOBO, and the number of problems folks had with that is not encouraging. The issue you're having is not out of the ordinary...
