Antwan Odom and Andrew Whitworth are back on the practice field but there’s still a long list of those not practicing — WR Antonio Bryant (knee), WR Maurice Purify (knee), CB Johnny Sears (undisclosed), CB Morgan Trent (ankle), S Roy Williams (undisclosed), FB Fui Vakapuna (shoulder), RB Brian Leonard (foot), S Chinedum Ndukwe (undisclosed), LB Rashad Jeanty (leg), OT Anthony Collins (tackle), DE Robert Geathers (foot), DE Frostee Rucker (undisclosed) and DT Tank Johnson (undisclosed).

Among the highlights from Marvin Lewis’ press conference earlier today. He said the starters would play the first half but not the first series of the third quarter and also deflected a question about the defensive line, where he seems to have more quality players than spots. So who knows he might keep all 11 on there at the moment. I’m not saying that’s going to happen but he also didn’t discount the possibility. Among other comments:

* General statements: “Going forward to Buffalo, we’re looking forward to having an opportunity to play another team on the road. They’re a team with a new coaching staff, and some things are a little different on offense and defense. Obviously, they’re making the transition from a 4-3 front to a 3-4 base front. They’ve got great speed on the perimeter offensively, very good speed at wide receiver. With the addition of (C.J.) Spiller in the backfield, there’s another guy with great perimeter speed, so it’ll be a very good challenge for our defense. Defensively, it’s a group that did a nice job last year getting some turnovers. They’re making the transition to a 3-4 under George Edwards, who’s the coordinator that I worked with in Washington, so they’re getting their feet wet that way.”

* On social media: “I think the social part for them is different now. Things have changed, guys it’s what they like to do, it is how they communicate. I don’t think you can sit there and act stupid and act like it doesn’t go on, because it does. It is how they communicate, and so forth.”

* On Chad Ochocinco’s $25,000 fine: “Nobody cares what Chad does in this building. The rest of those guys don’t care what Chad is doing. Those guys could care less what Chad is doing. People make more perception of Chad outside of this building. Which you know, because you’re here. All 40 or 30 of you could go right to his locker and everybody would not even have a second take. It’s just Chad is doing something stupid again and that is what it is going to be.”

* On if he could possibly place Rashad Jeanty and Tom Nelson on the PUP list to open the season: “Not yet, we still have a little bit of time. I will say to the positive on both players I’ve been encouraged by what both players are doing with their rehab. You can see smiles on both of their faces which is good since they are turning the corner.”

* On backup QBs: “I think that both JT and Jordan did improve over the short week last week and playing in the game. It’s a lot longer week this week and the cast around them gets a little more stable, which is good. In order to play that position you do need a supporting cast that you can count on. Sometimes it get reflective of you but I thought both guys had good weeks last week in the short week and then carried it into the game, and they’ve done a good job this week.”

Quick hits: Whitworth practicing; Bryant not; Bookish T.O.
By GEOFF HOBSON

Updated: 3:20 p.m.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said that injured wide receiver Antonio Bryant "had a good day yesterday," but he wouldn't say at his Wednesday news conference if he's close to practicing. That was answered about an hour later when Bryant (knee) was not in uniform. He was in the rehab area, but appeared to be doing exercises and not running.

» With the NFL owners talking about a longer regular-season schedule, three veterans expressed reservations about an 18-game sked, including quarterback Carson Palmer and Whitworth, the club's rep to the NFL Players Association. Safety Chris Crocker also wonders about the extra wear and tear. Palmer said he doesn't like an extended season because it means each game has less significance. Whitworth said he thinks the players will go for more games if the spring voluntary practices and training camp are cut back.

» Wide receiver Terrell Owens had this reaction to his locker mate's fine for Twittering during unauthorized times while the Bengals were beating the Eagles Friday night: "I just wish my pockets were as deep as his."

» Chad Ochocinco logged the most expensive Tweet in the brief history of Twitter when the NFL nailed him for $25,000.

» Owens is loving being teamed with a guy that gets almost attention as he does. And he's talking about defenses. He believes The Ocho is his best running mate since Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.

"You put our résumés side-by-side, and there's nobody out there that can really compare until you put Jerry Rice," Owens said. "This receiving duo is as good as advertised. There's no qualms about it. Anybody who wants to have negative things to say about it can just sit back and watch, and that's not being arrogant or cocky. That's just being confident in our ability and Carson."

» Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski has become a big fan of Owens. He says he's been the ultimate professional. "Exactly what a coach would want," he says, and Tuesday turned out to be a prime example why.

Owens couldn't practice Tuesday for an undisclosed reason (he worked Wednesday) and the coaches were surprised and impressed when Owens actually brought out his playbook to follow along with the practice. In his 19th NFL season, Bratkowski is pretty certain Owens is the first guy he's ever seen do that.

Preparing For Bills Nearly Completed

By Marc Hardin
Fox Sports Ohio/Bengals Insider
August 25th, 2010

-- BILLS' 3-4 BASE A PREVIEW: The Bengals will get a bit of a preview of how their slightly-tweaked offense may fare against those AFC North Division teams using a 3-4 defensive scheme when Cincinnati plays the Bills in Buffalo for preseason game four at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game also will be a preview of the Bills, whom the Bengals play at home on Nov. 21.

-- LEWIS-EDWARDS REUNION: Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said he is looking forward to seeing how his offense attacks the Bills' defense, for a couple reasons: "They’re a team with a new coaching staff, and some things are a little different on offense and defense. They’re making the transition from a 4-3 front to a 3-4 base front...Defensively, it’s a group that did a nice job last year getting some turnovers. They’re making the transition to a 3-4 under George Edwards, who’s the coordinator that I worked with in Washington, so they’re getting their feet wet that way."

-- BRYANT UPDATE: Coach Lewis said on Wednesday that injured wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) "had a good day yesterday," when the team practiced at Paul Brown Stadium on Tuesday, a day the media had no access. The coach would not go so far as to say when Bryant would resume practicing. Bryant was seen doing exercises at Paul Brown Stadium on Wednesday.

-- BACK TO WORK: Among those injured starting Bengals returning to practice on Wednesday were left tackle Andrew Whitworth (thumb) and right end Antwan Odom (knee). Other key players back in action after short injury layoffs are running back Bernard Scott (shoulder) and wide receivers Andre Caldwell (unknown) and Matt Jones (unknown).

-- RELAXED TEAM: Coach Lewis said veteran safety Gibril Wilson, who was injured on a freak play while attempting to make a tackle against Philadelphia on Friday, was one of the few players he's seen pressing in an effort to make the 53-player roster. When asked Wednesday if he was sensing some pressing from players who might be on the bubble, Lewis said, "I didn’t get a feel that last week we were pressing. The one guy who was pressing was Gibril (Wilson), who got hurt. You have to relax. If you start pressing, you’re going to become anxious and not perform your job. With the coaching, as we get to a particular point on some guy, you want them to play football and not try to outscheme anybody."
