'Possessed' nun crucified after row with priest
By Kate Connolly in Berlin
(Filed: 6/20/2005)

A Romanian Orthodox priest who faces a murder charge after ordering the crucifixion of a young nun because she was "possessed by the devil" was unrepentant as he conducted a funeral mass for his alleged victim.

Father Daniel Corogeanu, 29, said that the nun had been "possessed by the devil" and was "beyond salvation" in life.

He claimed that from the religious point of view, the crucifixion of Maricica Irina Cornici, 23, was "entirely justified", but admitted that he faced excommunication as well as prosecution, and was seeking a "good lawyer."

The nun was found dead last Wednesday, gagged and chained to a cross, after nuns from her order, the Holy Trinity, called for an ambulance in the remote mountain village of Tanacu in north-eastern Romania.

During a short funeral service at the weekend attended by 13 nuns who showed no emotion, Father Corogeanu said: "God has performed a miracle for her, finally Irina is delivered from evil."

Romanian reporters present at the ceremony said strangle marks were clearly visible on the corpse, which lay in an open casket.

Claps of thunder were heard as the coffin was lowered into the ground, a sign "that the will of God has been done", Father Corogeanu said.

Prosecutors said they had charged the priest and four nuns from the order with imprisonment leading to death, after questioning all 24 resident nuns.

For four days prior to her crucifixion, Sister Irina had been kept locked up with no food or water.

She was imprisoned after having an argument with the priest during Sunday mass, according to locals.

Church authorities said Father Corogeanu was banned from carrying out further duties pending an investigation and might face excommunication.

The monastery would be closed if the accused were found guilty, a bishop said.

A police spokesman claimed that during questioning the accused said Sister Irina had been possessed and needed to be exorcised.

They tied her to the cross after she had "protested violently", Mrs Straub said.

The Holy Trinity is located in one of Romania's most remote and poorest mountain dwellings, and has no electricity or running water.

Sister Irina joined the order three months ago, after visiting a friend who lived there.

According to medical reports she had been treated for schizophrenia.

Seriously, there are clergy in every possible denomination of every religion that are way beyond radical - it goes beyond Christian, Muslim, etc., etc., etc. I've noticed that the most dangerous, out there religious leaders (for lack of a better term) seem to be the ones whose interpretations of their chosen books of worship are literal.

"entirely justified"-now wait a minute, you haven't heard the whole story. Maybe he had a talk with God and God told him to do it.
IF God told him to do it-whom on here can argue vs that?
W went into Iraq after talking to a "Higher Being". Not his Dad ,but a higher being-you don't think W was talking about Clinton dooooooo yaaaaaaa ?
And please don't say W didn't say it-I've seen it on TV News a number of times.
Seriously the nun is a sad situation-a man of God has no more sense than that, sad.

i don't understand... people of faith PRAY!! why is that so scary... its not like you really hear the voice of God in your head and say "oh yes sir"... those types of people scare me.. when you pray (if you pray) you are kind of clearing your head, and talking it out... i believe that jesus is a spirit inside of me, so its "symbolic" to pray... i don't know how else to explain it... but there it is, and i know bj is cringing right now :)

i truely am not as religious as i may seem though... i rarely go to church, but i do pray often... its kind of like meditation i guess... i don't even pray out loud...

but W was just talking to a "higher being" (he was at least being politically correct :D ) and i hope he didn't get a direct answer  but i still have hope that it was the right decision...

No it's the mainstream belief in a book of stories passed down from 2000 years ago that makes such an action possible in the first place. People are taught these ridiculous things and when they think "God" is talking to them, they do it, because Christianity has made them fucking crazy!
Sounds like a good tagline for a movie.....I just might have to dust off the final draft pro.

Nice program, that Final Draft. I had an almost finished script for a sci-fi movie that I lost on my laptop's hard drive. But I have most of it written on paper, so I may have to do it all over again.

Yeah, and non-christians are all sane...

Some people outside of religion need to learn tolerance just as much as those within religion. One of these days I will get my point across.

You are entitled to your opinion.
Mine is that you are full of shit. Quit attacking someone else's belief systems. As long as ANY religion is kept out of the US government, then we can all coexist. NO prayer in public schools. Respect for the flag. Encouragement for alternate points of view, if plausible. Etc, yada yada...
I am a quasi-Christian at best and I resent your blanket-generalizing, insulting posts about Christianity.
Attack them all! Be consistent! Which 2000 year old book do you refer to? Hammurabi's Law? The Rosetta Stone? Quran? Bible? Torah?
All religious texts have a requirement for belief.
I for one never read the Bible anymore. But I don't go around slamming a religious text that has stood the test of time and if read properly, is AT LEAST an excellent guide for morality, which most of our US laws are based upon. You know, don't kill, don't steal, etc.
I want you to believe as you wish, because free will is the greatest gift that a human can have, and which the United States of America is the ONLY country on this Earth that actuallt tries to defend your right to have.

I feel sometimes that my better posts are wasted here and that I should try to write a book based on "The American Experience From A Gen-Xer's Point Of View"
I'm serious. I've contemplated the Great Novel for some time. I just can't seem to get "Hemingway Drunk" enough to get started.. ;)
