Really going all in

Recommended Posts

QB-Just add Allen. Or Dobbs. I love Josh Dobbs irrationally

RB-Cut Mixon, save 7 million and sign whoever is cheaper between Devin Singletary and Damien Harris. Pair them with a draft pick

WR-Trade Boyd, save 9 million. the Slot WR market hasn't moved at all. What's available? Olimade Zaccheaus, Jarvis Landry, Richie James, Isiah McKenzie and Chris Moore. None are Tyler Boyd but that's ok. They can be 3rd starters and combine with a rookie.

TE-Sign Foster Moreau or Dalton Schultz. It's a deep draft but those are two guys who are 26 and 27 and who make is so you can use draft capital elsewhere.

OL-Cut Collins trade Williams sign Cam Fleming draft a rookie RT early. Fleming is an ok RT and great swing tackle. Sign Matt Skura as an interior depth guy.

DT-Sign one of Calais Campbell, Ioannids

DE-Sign one of Lawson-Fowler-Ngakoue-Smoot all ex Hobby coached guys

LB-Nothing

S-Sign Bobby McCain and a starter out of Rapp-Gardner-Johnson and Johnson. Cut Brandon Wilson

CB-Re-sign Apple

Savings pay for themselves and don't eat into the 20 million in cap we currently have by more than 2 million

Easy places to save are drafting a DE/DT depth

Savings (38.3 million)

Mixon 7

Boyd 9

If the Bengals really wanted to load up for a Super Bowl run in 2023, they would exercise the 5th year option on Burrow but not extend him for another year. So he'd be on the 2023 cap at his current number. Likewise, they would wait and tag Tee next year so his number is unchanged. They wouldn't trade Boyd.

No need for Calais Campbell or Matt Ioannidis or Ngakoue. Dalton Schultz would cost more than 7 mil, he was on the tag last year. The team would have been in the Jalen Ramsey sweepstakes.

Those would all be very unBengal like moves. They prefer to manage the cap conservatively and not pull forward future draft picks or cap space.

In a mock offseason at Football's Future, I made fixing the tackle positions my top priority. We lost Bates and Pratt to big contract offers from other teams but re-signed almost all of the other Bengal free agents. No offer made to Brandon Allen, Elijah Holyfield, or Max Scharping. We cut Mixon, Huber, and Brandon Wilson. We traded Collins and Jonah for 5th rounders.

In free agency we signed Quincy Williams for 6 mil, the same as he got IRL. We paid Kelvin Beachum similarly and he went for about half that IRL. We made a big offer to Tremaine Edmunds but he got a bigger offer elsewhere. We added Tashaun Gipson as veteran depth at Safety behind Hill. We signed Blaine Gabbert to be the backup QB and Jeff Driskel to compete with Browning for QB3. We signed Raheem Mostert and Rashaad Penny for a couple mil each. We added Graham Glasgow and Cam Fleming for veteran depth. At TE, we re-signed Hurst and added Tonyan and Mycole Pruitt. On the D-line we signed Fowler and Carlos Watkins cheap. We added a couple other cheap vets in Duke Riley at LB and LaMarcus Joyner. We signed CB Isaiah Oliver for quality depth.

In the draft we traded up into the top 10 for Paris Johnson. It cost picks 28 and 60 this year plus next year's first rounder. That's a move the Bengals would never do. Later we drafted Darius Rush in round 3, Jayden Reed in round 4, Karl Brooks, Kendre Miller, and Stetson Bennett in round 5 and Nick Saldiveri in round 6. We haven't gotten to round 7 yet.

I planned to extend Burrow but exercised his 5th year option which apparently made him ineligible for an extension (only players in final year of contract could be extended). So I extended Tee for 6 years, 135 mil. That starts with 2023 and the final year is fluff. I also kept DJ Reader around for a couple more years at 17 mil per. Didn't need to restructure anyone for cap space and team was about 10 mil under the cap under the rule of 51. I haven't checked yet to see where we'd be inseason.

IIRC that is how KC did Mahomes big contract.  In 2020 between year 3 and 4 they exercised his 5th year option and then gave him an extension a few months later.  His signing bonus was only $10 million.

So in 2020 Mahomes played under his 4th year rookie salary plus his signing bonus, in 2021 he played under his 5th year option and this past season 2022 was his first season of his 10 year big salary extension.
