Thanks guys for answering my question earlier. I didnt watch the game today because i was out on the golf course with my pops. I was talking to him alittle bit about the lack of talent in USA(keep in mind he absolutly hates soccer and thinks its a girls sport). He brought up a good point though, he said that he believes that the problem with the US is that every other country in the world has their best athletes in their country playing soccer. The best athletes in the US play football, basketball aand baseball, and soccer gets whatever is left. I really believe that this is true. And i agree with whoever posted it earlier that once soccer is shown more on TV then I think you will see a more interest in US. But todays performance didnt help US soccer one bit.

true in the past, much much less accurate today. that point will be obsolete in the future, trust me.

Brazil...not so impressive today...but kaka's goal was definatly impressive...i can't even score with that man on Fifa 06.

France...well they won't get anywhere if they can't score a goal.

Two die in Somalia as hardline Islamists ban World Cup

MOGADISHU (AFP) - Hardline Islamic courts shut cinema halls and barred residents from watching the World Cup, prompting scores of civilians to protest the ban in which two people were killed, court officials and residents said.

The gunmen loyal to the Joint Islamic Courts (JIC), cut electricity, cleared cinema halls and warned residents against watching the football tournament in areas they control, forcing a violent protest late on Saturday in which two people were killed, residents said Sunday.

The JIC deputy chairman AbdulKadir Ali Omar said the Islamic tribunals would crack down on halls that defy the order to show western films and video, including the World Cup.

"This is war against all people who show films that promote pornography, drug dealing and all forms of evil," Omar told AFP.

"We shall not even allow the showing of the World Cup because they corrupt the morals of our children whom we endeavour to teach the Islamic way of life," he added.

Islamic courts officials said they were against some elements of World Cup, notably the advertisements for alcohol.

On Sunday, residents said Islamic gunmen were roaming in Sukahola and Huriwa neighbourhoods in northern Mogadishu to ensure that the ban was enforced.

A strict interpretation of Islamic taechings often bans Western films and television as immoral.

"The Islamic courts have ordered the closure of three cinema halls," said Sukahola resident Abdulaziz Hanad told AFP. "They want to make sure that nobody in Mogadishu watches the World Cup."

"Since the Islamic courts took control of Mogadishu, we knew they would not allow us to watch football," said a dejected Dahir Abubakar Hassan, a resident of northern Mogadishu.

Last year, the courts started to forcefully close cinema halls, arguing that they were showing steamy Bollywood and Hollywood films, which have been translated into the Somali language, to children, which is an apparent violation of the Islamic teachings.

Last Monday, the Islamists defeated the warlords and seized control of most of Mogadishu, sparking fears of a Taliban-like takeover, with the forcible imposition of Sharia law, but the court's leader Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said he would not impose the laws unless civilians called for them.

Somalia pulled out of international sporting events after the country plunged into anarchy following the violent ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

But residents in other pockets of Mogadishu still under control of the warlords gathered in makeshift cinema halls and watched the tournament that was being relayed from Germany through satellite dishes.

In the remaining warlords' stronghold of Jowhar, about 90 kilometres (55 miles) north of Mogadishu, residents gathered in public cinema halls to watch the 32-nation tournament, an AFP correspondent said.

"If only they can hold the peace for one month and allow us to watch football," Hassan Omar, a teenager in Jowhar told AFP.

In the seat of the impotent and fractured Somali government in Baidoa, about 250 kilometres (155) miles northwest of the capital, residents were not allowed to watch the 10.00 pm (1900 GMT) World Cup match because of a curfew.

Information Minister Mohamed Abdi Hayir said anybody who violates the curfew -- which runs from 9:00 PM (1800 GMT) to 5:00 am (0200 GMT), shall be sentenced to one to three months in jail with a fine of between 1,500,000 Somali shillings (1,080 dollars) and 3,000,000 shillings (2,160 dollars).
That Fernando Torres strike to make it 4-0 vs. Ukraine was the goal of the tourney for me so far.

Finish was good, but the build up was fantastic, Puyols with the steal, and the 4 Spaniards one touching the ball up the field, before a final header into the path of Torres who volleys it in.

Impressive performance by the Spaniards for sure. Is this the WC where they finally shed the under achievers tag?

Biggest game of US soccer against ghana. We have to at least 3 or so goals to catch up in GD and we have to hope Czech or Italy lose.

Ghana is still fighting for a spot too...but there missing two key players.

Oh yah and a nice FUCK YOU to the refs of that U.S. game.

Well, I'm no expert on this world cup stuff but... if we beat Ghana and Italy beats Czech, wouldn't we be in by default?

Umm...lets see

U.S. has one point now and the win over Ghana would give them 4.

Czech only has 3 so i believe so. If they tie or Czech wins...we would have to catch up in GD.

So go ITALY!
Oh shit man, you asked for it...be prepared for a lengthy diatribe which will make one of Lawman's specials look like a Garfield strip in comparison.

1. Cool man. West Ham get a lot of support, as they are an old team, but a smaller one. But they've always been a bit different from other English teams as they've always stressed passing, "good looking" football, unlike the punt up the field and chase which was English football for so long. Ron Greenwood, a former West Ham manager once made the statement that he would prefer to lose a match 8-5 then draw a game 0-0 after playing a team who had been particularly boring, so they go from there.

However supporting West Ham has been like supporting the Bengals. More downs than ups in the last little while. West Ham are run (like the Bengals) by a cheap ass named Brown..except in this case, it is Sir Terence Brown. A man who is a notorious tight wad.

One of the things West Ham have always done well, is to have a great youth system...the team is known as the "Academty of football"...West Ham formed the backbone of england's 1966 World Cup winning team etc. Anyhoo...7 years ago...West Ham's youth team conquered all, and these players came into the senior team. Rather than keep them and build a succesful team for the future, Terence Brown decided to sell them for large sums of cash to build new stands in the stadium and take the team out of debt. this caused an uproar and other guys asked to leave...net result, West ham were relegated, and then the team got into real deep shit as they were deprived of the Premier league tv revenues. But if you want some grim reading...here are the players we sold or who left us upon relegation:

Rio Ferdinand (the Man Utd and England Defender)
Glen Johnson (Chelsea and england alternate)
Frank Lampard (Chelsea and England's best player now arguably)
Joe Cole (Chelsea, England Midfielder)
David James (Former England goalie)
Michael Carrick (Tottenham and England midfielder)
Jermain Defoe (Tottenham and England striker)
Trevor Sinclair (former England midfielder)

that's the ultimate fuck you....to have 8 members of your team go on to find success with other clubs...and represent England...for the longest time, I couldn't watch football when England played because it was too painful....to see your former team become the best players in the country while the team itself flirted with financial disaster in a lower league.

It would be like if the Bengals played the Patriots with a play off game on the line and Corey Dillon running for the single game record on us, scoring 8 touchdowns and killing us multiplied by 100.

The first season in the lower championship league saw West Ham qualify for the play offs to get back into the Premiership...and then lose to an opponent we dominated in the play off final. Another season in the Championship...I thought the team was cursed.

Luckily, the team had hired a new coach that season...Alan Pardew...who didn't have much credentials at the highest level...but was seen as a good judge of talent and an effective communicator....sort of like Marvin when he was with the stealers...

So, finally last season, after clearing some dregs out and getting his guys in there, Pardew got us back to the Premier League....where this season, we were expected to fight relegation, but instead, finished 9th and made the FA cup Final qualifying for European competition! Not only that, but there is the basis for a great young team again. The fear amongst West Ham fans, is of course that Brown doesn't make the same gaffe as last time and try to sell them for money. He says, he learnt from the mistakes of the past, but only time will tell.
2. The movie was exxagerated like you mention and didn't find a lot of favour with West Ham fans...but historically it's basis is legit. In the 1970's and 1980's when hooliganism was at it's prime, West Ham had one of the fiercest groups of supporters around. Called "The firm" they weren't really fans per say, more just guys who travelled with the team to fight rival supports. Other groups who were particularly tough were Chelsea's "Stamford Bridge Posse"

Not sure if you have bittorent or file sharing, but look for a documentary called "Hooligan" It's a 1984 ITV documentary on soccer fans, and focuses on a group of West Ham thugs.

But that has petered out...for one thing...the Football Association and Police have really cracked down on that now...so there is no violence at games. Also, over the years, the area of West Ham's stadium has become primarily an area for South Asian immigrants and such...so people tend to come in for the games and then take the train out.

The hatred for Millwall is also true and goes back to the beginning of the 20th century I think ... and if I may say so, their fans are way worse. Racists as well. But those bastards got relegated to the 2nd division, so fuck them.

But you can see some of the feelings that exist to this day in these threads:

Less then 12 hours till the game

Im fucking nervous...these guys beat Czech 2-0. But then again im confident we can pull it out. We just need donovan to get touches and make something happen...Beasely needs to tear that wing up. Mcbride needs to score when he gets the chance. Renya needs to slow the game down and get us up the field. Gooch needs to mark up and body out players. SO many things to do...people just need to do their jobs. If they do their jobs...im confident Italy can pull one out against the Czech.

None the less Win, Tie, or Loss

I will always support my Country
