Crawford returns to kentucky squad
We're pleased that Joe is back with us and working out with the team,” Coach Tubby Smith said. “As a leader, it's important to have patience and give young people the space to make their own decisions. We're glad Joe has chosen to rejoin us. Our commitment to Joe remains to help him become a better person, better student and better basketball player. It's the same commitment we make to anyone who is a part of Kentucky basketball.”

“I’m glad to be back and I’m ready to give this my all,” Crawford stated. “I’m thankful that Coach Smith has given me a second chance, even though he didn’t have to. That shows me that he’s glad that I’m a part of this team.

“The hardest thing about last week was being away from my teammates because of our bond. Since I’ve been back, they’ve treated me well and welcomed me with open arms. I’m back and I want to finish my college career as a Kentucky Wildcat.”
great news here... he is going to be something when he does get his chance full time... tubby is noterious for throwing guys in there when they don't expect it... he better be ready to back up the claim of needing more pt... bradley has played great since crawford left so we'll so whats next...

a great article... this should be a lesson for all college players... :
DREW SHARP: Grow up, Joe: Kentucky sends right message

freep.com/sports

The contradiction is typical of many things in sports these days: When an 18-year-old athlete excels, he graduates to manhood. When he disappoints, he somehow navigates that tricky U-turn back to childhood.

Players are conveniently kids when something goes awry. Cut them some slack. Immediately forgive them their mistakes. And, God forbid, don't hold them accountable for adult choices they might quickly regret.

But one school deserves credit for taking a stand against rampant freshman entitlement -- Kentucky.

Former Detroit Renaissance basketball star Joe Crawford left the Wildcats in a huff last week because he didn't think he was playing enough midway through his freshman season. After all, he was a high school All-America. Rather than compete, he complained.

He was ready to transfer to Michigan State, but Kentucky wouldn't let him out of his letter of intent, stonewalling until it was too late for Crawford to enroll at MSU for the spring semester.

What nerve! How dare they?

Kentucky's message to Crawford was simple: Be a man and honor your word for at least one year.

The prodigal point guard returned to practice Monday. He might face reprisals, but it's an opportunity for growth if Crawford looks at it wisely. But if he takes a vindictive approach -- blaming Kentucky for promises it didn't keep -- then he will become just another footnote in this continuing folly of misguided privilege.

All most people want in life is an opportunity to compete fairly and then rise or fall on the merits of their abilities. But basketball recruiting has crossed over into the absurd, with high school prima donnas negotiating playing time instead of earning it on the practice floor against players of comparable talent.

"We're pleased that Joe is back with us and working out with the team," Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said. "As a leader, it's important to have patience and give young people the space to make their own decisions."

The few times I've talked to Crawford, he has come across as a young man of strong character. But his downfall is not unlike those of other high school All-Americas. He has too many influences in his ear telling him that college is merely a brief way station on his route to the NBA.

Players like Crawford are told they have to play and play quickly to warrant the NBA's attention.

Malik Hairston, Crawford's Renaissance teammate and fellow McDonald's All-America, stunned recruiting analysts when he spurned North Carolina, UCLA and Michigan for Oregon because the opportunity to stand out from the pack was better there. He wouldn't have to battle teammates and their high school newspaper clippings.

Hairston said his objective was to "Carmelo-ize" the Ducks, a reference to Carmelo Anthony, who went to Syracuse to win the national title and left for the NBA after one season.

Crawford's family has declined comment about his situation at Kentucky, but the family supposedly is upset with Smith for not respecting Crawford's wishes to leave. If a child is unhappy, shouldn't he have the opportunity to go back to Mommy and Daddy?

Sources close to the situation said Smith was willing to release Crawford from his letter of intent but was overruled by athletic director Mitch Barnhart, who apparently has tired of the impetuousness of youth.

Make a decision. Live with it. Grow up and accept the consequences of your actions. Of course, that principle doesn't apply to the coaches who sign contracts as easily disposable as toilet paper. But you don't see coaches bolting 12 games into the season.

The attitude of young hotshots frustrates college coaches. If they want an elite program, they must recruit the big names, but the big names offer big headaches because they demand special privileges based on what they did in high school -- as if that matters.

Just playing doesn't necessarily make you a better player. It's ridiculous to suggest that spirited competition in Kentucky practices against equal talent would not make Crawford a better player in the long run.

Brandon Cotton is fat and happy at Detroit Mercy after bolting from Michigan State just 10 games into his freshman season because he thought his high school All-America resume merited automatic playing time.

He's playing now. He's scoring. He's getting headlines. He's quickly becoming The Man for the Titans.

You can't tell me that his long-term objectives wouldn't have been better served had he fought for minutes in East Lansing, forcing him to get better. But accepting challenges today requires more maturity than many players are willing to display.

also a great quote before this season started... when asked at the start of the season how he (Tubby) was going to keep all those hot shots happy he replied "I don't worry about keeping them happy. They have to worry about keeping ME happy."

he meant it too... well, our ad did :D thank god he did too... this doesn't paint the rosy picture like the last article i posted did... i have a feeling, it is much more like this... :(

I remember that battle cry...when I was in basic training at Fort KNox in 1988-89!!
BTW, did anyone catch the barnburner comeback cats against Ole Miss tonight???
WHEW! We escaped with a nail-biter there...man we can't shoot sometimes...0-12 from 3pt range in the 1st half, 20% overall 1st half shooting for a whopping 16 pts...if it weren't for our stellar D we would have been down by a lot more than 13 pts at the half!!!!
But man, are we a great 2nd half team or what? We're like Jekyll and Hyde...

I got to stick with UK, I know im from the Nati but I lived in Ft. Knox for a good portion of my life which is when I developed a my UK fandom.

I dont know about you Bung, but seeing Pitino coach UL is like if your brother married someone you really disliked. Cause Im such a Pitino fan as well.

It would be like if Louis Lane married Lex Luther, How would Superman feel about that?!?
