What NFL team did Bill Zimmer play for ?

Recommended Posts

What NFL team did Bill Zimmer play for ? I have seen it reported under Mike Zimmer that he is the son of a former NFL player. I can't seem to find what team no matter what type of search engine I put on it. Anyone know the answer ? Thanks in advance for your assistance in helping solve the trivia of the day.

Perhaps this is mistaken. I found a pro football reference site (pro-football-reference.com) that did not have a Zimmer in its list of NFL players. It did have Mike Zimmer as a coach, but not his son, so I'm not sure how complete it is.

I did some searching and found Hobson's article about the game after Vicki Zimmer's death, and when talking about Mikes dad, he says he was a hall of fame HS Coach, and nothing about any NFL career.

I'm not aware that he played. He was a coach only, as you indicate.

Found it. Damn, he was a 49er.
Zimmer's father, Bill Zimmer, played football for the San Francisco 49ers, so the younger Zimmer has grown up in the game. If he can bring his success with the Cowboys to the Falcons, it shouldn't be too much to expect him to improve a unit that underperformed last season.
Hmm. Wonder why he wasn't in that reference database then. They've got some pretty obscure names present.

No idea. The article I posted said he was 78 last year.

And the 49ers didn't come into existence until 1946.

So he was born in 1932 (or thereabouts). Which means he was 18 the 49ers first season.

I didn't see him on any roster here. So I don't know, really.

I did find a quote where he said that he was in the NFL when in it stood for "not for long." I took that to mean he did not play for long. I did the math on it and figured he was on the early 49ers team but still do not see a roster with his name on it.

William Zimmer is 79 years old so the 1932 date is accurate.

I did a search on that Database for 49ers players who appeared in a game, and his name did not come up. There were some players in the search results who played before the 49ers joined the NFL in 1950. If that database is complete for those years, he did not appear in a game.

Also, I would have thought his coaching bio on Bengas.com might have mentioned it... It dd mention that he was an IL HOF high school wrestling and FB coach, but no NFL mention at all.

I wonder if he had a drink of water with the 9'ers during preseason or training camp, but was an early cut... Seems odd that it's so hard to find his name associated with any roster. I know sometimes guys get credit for being NFL'ers, when in reality they were just NFL training camp fodder.

That's probably what it was. When I started rummaging through the rosters on the 49ers during those years I did find one small nugget.

Bill "Tiger" Johnson which is well known by us as the Bengal's head coach that Paul Brown chose over Bill Walsh. He was also known as the father of the evil empire that exists in Heinz Field (See bio on his son's relationship with Heinz). I knew he played for the 49ers but never paid attention to what position. Most report his position as just a Center but he also played Linebacker. Johnson was on the 49ers from 1948-1956. In other words, he would have known Bill Zimmer.
