The following quote is taken from a conservative e-letter I subscribe to (The Federalist).

I thought this person said it well:

"I love my country and its flag as much as anybody, but I'd rather live in a country where people don't burn the flag because they don't want to, rather than in a country where they don't burn the flag because it's prohibited. The purpose of the Constitution is to limit what government can do, not to limit what the people can do. Leave the Constitution alone."

YAY!! We agree on this one ;)
Fuck no. it shouldn't be illegal.

Just because it offends some people it should be illegal?

No way.

I, personally would never burn a flag.  I love the flag, I have one on my car (a sticker).

But I'd defend anyone's right to speak out against the government, however they see fit.

agreed! if our founding fathers were around today they would have a fit over the way things are run these days!

Their is a method we have in the U.S. too display dissent, VOTE. The Flag is more than a mere piece of good fabric and it represents more than just government policies that one may disagree with. Check out the site.
Lawman, I agree that the flag is more than those things you stated.  I don't think it should be burned. But banning burning is not why those soldiers died for it.

BengalSIS,
I guess I am really asking a question as to why are you burning the Flag (if legal)?
If the act is dissent against the government, then Vote. Oh you were not happy with the results and the person you voted for was not elected or the referendum did not turn out your way and your recourse is to burn the flag as a means of showing your displeasure. Sorry, but I don't buy it. The Flags representation/symbol encompasses more than our government policies. The flag represents all of us that call ourselves American (I know you live in Canada, but I still think of you as an American). Burning the Flag is offensive to me and to me it symbolizes that you wish harm upon me and my family and friends, I cannot stand by for that. For that reason, I voted NO to legalize burning the flag and hope that it would be illegal to do so under an anti-inflammatory act.

I have been burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries I have helped set free. It does not hurt,
for I am invincible.

I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of my country. And when it's by those whom I've served in battle -- it hurts. But I shall overcome -- for I am strong

"We Canadians burn our flag all the time just to keep warm." -- Buddy Cole

Personally, I'm against the idea of turning the flag into a deity. Outlawing flag burning is like outlawing blasphemy -- idiotic.

Lawman. While I see your point and I agree that I hate to see the flag burned and would never do it myself, I do not think it should be outlawed.

The flag symbolizes a lot of things for a lot of people. Someone burning the flag doesn't change one bit how I feel about my country. Why give them more power by making that action mean something? It's not like it's done very often, and anyone brave enough to try it is sure as hell putting their life on the line for being beaten up by people who think they shouldn't be burning the flag.

the flag may represent our country's heritage and symbolize freedom, but the flag only represents that... in other words, you can do whatever you want to a flag (and get your ass kicked) but you can't take away our democracy and our freedom...

banning the flag will deminish our freedoms though...
