Fuck if I know what they call it in Korea. Anyway, it's steamed rice and then they beat the shit out of it until it turns into this cake like substance that sticks to the roof of your mouth worse than super glue on your fingertips. The lady squatting there to the side reaches in after each throw of the hammer and folds the mess in half. Gotta be quick. It's actually quite interesting to watch them make mochi. I did it once and I can tell you that being the one throwing the hammer wears your ass out, and being the one that folds it over each time really works on your reflexes. That hammer does not slow down. MULLY Watching someone get their hand smashed is a bonus. These guys are really good. Watch it until the end. Maximus Posted September 23, 2006 Report Share Posted September 23, 2006 Actually, it is called "duk", (not sure of spelling), but pronounced "duck". It is very different from the Japanese mochi in that it is a lot less sweet. It is also typically not covered in the white powder that you see in the picture.
