But as always, evil loses in the end. And in the Nazis case, it was due to political interference in military matters from politicians (Hitler), incompetence (Hitler), overreaching (Hitler) and the destruction of industrial complexes (Allies). LoyalFanInGA v2.0
People have the right to shoot someone that trespasses into their home. People should NOT shoot someone that is robbing their neighbor's home, ESPECIALLY in this instance where the robbers were fleeing the scene. And ESPECIALLY not to kill. If it had been me, IN MY HOME, if I had time to choose, I would have likely taken their kneecaps out with my shotgun. Yeah, they'll never walk again, but they'll live. This hearkens back to the Bernie Goetz case (sp?), where an armed civlian shot two thugs that threatened him with a screwdriver on a subway... I don't know. Some of this breaches those grey areas in life where right and wrong become blurred an sometimes people just act, rightly or wrongly. I keep a shotgun in the house for home defense and for any eventuality (such as a worst-case scenario of Katrina-like proportions where there may be rampant looting, rape, etc) and I have every right to, but there are responsibilities that go with gun ownership and many gun owners are too trigger happy. But there are also those that are pussified liberals that think nobody should own a gun, and they are just as wrong. This country was founded on the principle that people have the right to defend themselves, with deadly force if necessary. Unfortunately, in this era of shoot first and ask questions later, common sense was thrown out with the bathwater. But, you also never know what the intention of someone is that is threatening you or your family, so sometimes you have to make a pre-emptive judgement call and live with it. <<sigh>>
For the most part, I agree with you. But rudi32 has a good point about shooting to disable, especially with a shotgun. I've got a 12 gauge shotgun, 3.5" chamber, 00 buck precisely so I don't have to aim. It's strictly reflexive firing, point and shoot. No sight alignment or sight picture, body position, breath control, trigger squeeze. Point and shoot...then multiple, scattering, hot metal projectiles do the rest...through anything in my house...except the exterior, brick walls. There is no reason for anyone to be in my house without an invitation. That includes 17 year old, first time offenders. Sure, he might go on to do great things after making a mistake or he could be taking his first step to becoming a career criminal; can't determine that during a break in. If he makes a run for the door, keep running; make a break for my family...then it's "Say hello to my little friend" time.

In their systematic review, Theresa Moore and colleagues found “an increase in risk of psychosis of about 40% in participants who had ever used cannabisâ€, and a clear dose-response effect with an increased risk of 50–200% in the most frequent users. In 1995, we began a Lancet editorial with the since much-quoted words: “The smoking of cannabis, even long term, is not harmful to health.†Research published since 1995, including Moore's systematic review in this issue, leads us now to conclude that cannabis use could increase the risk of psychotic illness. Further research is needed on the effects of cannabis on affective disorders. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs will have plenty to consider. But whatever their eventual recommendation, governments would do well to invest in sustained and effective education campaigns on the risks to health of taking cannabis. And if you think health insurance costs would go down, you're fooling yourself. Do you know why health insurance is so high? Because the prices hospitals charge them. Do you know why hospitals charge so much? Because they know the insurance companies will pay. And who ultimately pays? Why, the consumer of course.
I know I'm preaching to the choir with you about insurance companies, but... Hospital charge so much because insurance companies reimburse for less than the cost. Hospitals have to charge more to break even. Hospitals have to charge even more to make a profit. You don't get the latest equipment and best doctors without $$$. Insurance companies require me to order A and B when I really want to order C, but if I don't order A and B the insurance company won't preauthorize C. So instead of paying for just C, you're paying for A, B, and C. Same with meds. I want to prescribe Z, the latest studies indicate it works better. But, the insurance companies require you try X and Y first and if your condition/symptom doesn't respond then you can take Z. If you selected an HMO instead of a PPO, I can't refer you to a specialist. You have to pay for another appt with your primary care doctor so he can refer you to a specialist. Now you're paying for 3 doctors appts instead of 2, at a minimum.
