our 1988 astro van(used for tailgating) needs a new stero. When i go to ciruit city's web page it says the radios are compatable, but needs a face plate, and wireharnes kit? How much do those run? i dont want to put to much into it, since i only drive it 10 times a year.

Buy a stereo from crutchfield. They will include an instruction set, wiring harness, and faceplate, etc. as needed for free.

Last I remember, Circuit will charge extra for all of the above...
yeah, it's much better to pay for the kits, than to get them free, clearly
i have been looking at a lot of stuff for the van. New seat covers, tent(as if we need anymore), a new 6 foot rubbermaid banquet table(already purchased, told the wife how much we needed it for entertaining at the house). But i think a working radio is most important.

do you have any good pics of the van? somehow i dont have any, and am to lazy to go out and take some.

I don't think I've taken any pics of the van, strangely enough. Have a few of those Snickers guys tho ^_^

Seriously, check out crutchfield. Kits/harnesses/instructions and maybe shipping  are free. Plus tech support. Their prices are run of the mill, but their service is anything but.

I'd offer to do the install for you, but I'm sure you'll have it done long before I'm back in town. -_-

Crutchfield is also a lot more expensive than Circuit City.

A word of advice. I used to be a "stereo guy" back in the day, I didn't do a whole lot of my installation but I understood how everything worked and how to tweak it very well.
For a POS (apologies) vehicle like yours, it's worth it to let someone that knows what they are doing to install it rather than doing it yourself. All you need is an inexpensive head unit that can play MP3's and possibly a couple speakers. If your speakers are stock (from 1988?), then they are complete garbage and should be replced. Hell, you could just replace the front ones in the doors only and get a better pair than what's in there now for about 50 bucks tops. head unit, maybe $150 for a cheap Pioneer or something.
Total cost with speakers, head unit and install at a CC or a place like it would be about $240. And worth it.
since when? Wasn't that way when I worked for them ;)
When I used to be really into car audio I always had their catalogs handy, and their stuff was always more expensive than buying thr same thing at a CC or whatnot.
Now they were on par with specialized audio shops, which is where I ended up taking my car to, and spending thousands of dollars on my stereo, but it's cheaper and easier to go the CC route if you just need a basic stereo and a couple speakers if you don't want to or can't install it yourself.

Running wire in a car can be a chore, especially power cable off the battery into the vehicle.

The prices were generally in line with CC when I worked there. Def cheaper once kits etc were included. Plus, if you are doing it yourself, crutchfield offers terrific tech support, while the asshats at CC can barely count to 10.

I never paid for install b/c I was certified to do it myself. And anything I didn't dare do on my own (which wasn't much) I'd have the guys in the install bay do for me for a 6 pack B)

Onlinecarstereo and crutchfield.com are definitely cheaper than Best Buy and Circuit City. I've done the shopping recently. I installed everything myself and the extra money you save with the guys who give you the kits is definitely worth it. You go to Best Buy and ask for the kit, the guy walks around the garage for a few minutes and tells you he doesn't have it. Then you go to the specialty stereo guys and buy the shit and you just spent a good $30. Of course, if you're not too handy with some simple electronics, just go to your local store and give all your hard earned cash away. If you didn't work hard for your cash, then don't worry about it.

Sounds like you've picked what you're going to do already, but I'd like to take this opportunity to advise everyone out there never to buy an Insignia brand car stereo from Best Buy. They are the shittiest of the shitty. Not even good enough enough to say, "well, I saved some money". No, they absolutely, positively suck humongous donkey balls. Spend the extra $40 or so for the name brand.
I bought one for my shitty old pickup, since I wanted to spend the absolute least amount of money possible. All I wanted was a working radio and CD player for a beat up old truck that I'll be getting rid of in a year. Not too much to ask, right? That's what I thought, too.

Circuit City also has free installation on any head unit over $100.

on a related topic, im looking to replace the speakers in my 94' Civic, i went to Circuit City and they have a deal on Polk speakers going on where you buy a pair and you get the second pair half off. I planned on replacing all the speakers in the car anyways so i decided that might be the best route i just don't know much about Polk. Does anyone know anything about Polk speakers, I'm thinking about getting these two models for the car.

Also, i don't think im going to replace the stock stereo yet in the car just because i don't have the cash just yet. The car needs new speakers badly so i decided to go with those first because the front right doesn't work at all and the two back speakers are both blown. How will the stock head unit affect teh quality of the after market speakers?

I haven't been in the biz for a decade... but I used to be a huge fan of Polks. Their low end was more than decent. Their high end was damn good. (and I consider myself a bit of an audiophile, fwiw)

Do you have the stock head unit in the car, or have you replaced it? I've had better luck with a new head unit and stock speakers than the other way around, more often than not.

As of right now in the car the whole system is stock. i decided that i would go with buying speakers first due to the fact that the only speaker that works like it is supposed to is the front driver side speaker, all the other speakers sound like complete shit. The stock head unit is installed in the car as well right now but i plan to replace it within the next month or two when i find a steady source of income. Im looking at head units that are Ipod connectable, the only problem is that some head units that are Ipod connectable wont let you scroll through artists and such so say you have 500 songs on your Ipod and i wanted to listen to song 499 i would have to hit the next button 498 times. I want on that i can scroll through my ipods artists and playlists through the head unit. So far im looking at these two models.
