I didn't realize we were talking about the best "pound-for-pound" boxer.

In that case, I nominate this guy.

Alot opf great fighters mentioned ....I'd go with Sugar Ray Robinson...
At one point in his career he won a record 125 straight bouts.. 5 time middleweight campion and welterweight champ as well... 179-19-106 and 16 of those losses came after the age of 35....Ali once said " He was the King, my idol"

It may be controversial and he is a nutcase now, but I still believe that in his early 20's in his prime Mike Tyson was the Best Boxer ever....  Before the Raping, face Tats, ear biting, etc..... There wasn't a human ever alive that could step in the ring and not get knocked out by him

He wasn't a boxer.

IT's a toss up between JACK JOHNSON and ALI.

UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS = great docu on Jack Johnson.

What the hell do you mean?

He was the most punishing, electrifying, puncher the world has ever known.... sure he was a head case, but you can't discount the pure talet and power that he had when he hit you in the ring

Your right about the power. No doubt, i loved watching Tyson fights when i was a kid. He's the fighter who got me interested in the sport. But his skills as a boxer and his height/ reach/ stamina were lacking in comparison to an Ali or Johnson. He was a brawler, get in and get the opponet out as quick as possible. If someone was able to withstand the initial fury, you know stand their ground , wear him out, he was in some serious trouble. Buster Douglas, Holyfield, etc.

The Douglas fiasco was a result of all the out of the ring bullshit (his ex wife, money issues, don king, new trainer, death of adopted father, no cut man in the ring so he couldn't see shit)

As for Holyfield that was post prison he lost it all while locked up

Tyson was all power, no technique, and dumber than a fence post.
He deserved everything he got.
I wish I could earn 500 million dollars for beating up has-beens in ten years....
...except he blew it all and now tries to gain sympathy for his lack of cheese in his wallet...fuck him...he's an undeserving asshole who blew everything for nothing...
Ali was the greatest that I've ever seen, pound for pound...

I'm kinda surprised nobody even gave Sugar Ray Leonard an honorable mention...he was a GREAT fighter...

Ali. Hands down.

Tyson had great power and was fun to watch. However he had no technique. If the fight lasted past the second round, he was done. He had no stamina or skill. Once his opponents figured that out, he was never the same. He fought in an era where there weren't many contenders. Ali fought while boxing was in its prime.

Sugar Ray Leonard was also a great fighter.

Joe Louis 68-3-0 with 54 KOs
JOSEPH LOUIS BARROW, the legendary "Brown Bomber," is considered by many to be the finest heavyweight champion in the history of boxing. He held the world's heavyweight title from June 22, 1937 until June 25, 1948 and made a division-record 25 successful title defenses.

Jersey Joe Walcott was the picture of perseverance. He won the heavyweight title in his fifth try, accomplishing the feat at the age of 37. He held the record for oldest heavyweight champion until 45-year-old George Foreman won the crown in 1994.

CrazyI I know blacks fought at the time that Rocky did, but I hope you aren;t implying that they had equal shots to make it into the sport..... at a time when they couldn't share water fountains, swimming pools, restaurants etc...

Yes there were some that made it big but when it came to scouting, training facilities, investment in fighters etc... it wasn't the same as today

I don’t think he is implying that...

blacks may not have had the routine chances at fighting marciano, but implying that they had lesser training facilities, scouting, investment, etc. is sad to hear but does not add any support to why joe louis or any of the other fighters should be considered better fighters than marciano

they were not as good bc of this lack of proper training, but that only supports other peoples claim as to why marciano was better, marciano won head to head, thats all that matters, but yes, if they had better training the results could have been different, but they didnt

-i really wish more people knew about jack johnson, he was basically unbeatable and fought whites and blacks, in what was (i think?) the last match he lost he was accused of throwing the fight so he may not have really been the lesser fighter

No the most punishing fighter was Aaron Pryor out of Cincinnati..
Aaron was the most dominating fighter of all time......
Sugar Ray Robinson was the best fighter as far a ring technician...125 straight wins think about that...

Robinson was a bad man.

This post reeks of homerism(just for you oldschoool :D ), Pryor was good, but most dominating fighter of all time is a stretch.

Jack Johnson fought at a time when boxers were tougher, fought longer fights, and were better fighters in general. Johnson dominated the competition and was considered the best ever until the pundits found a guy they like more than Johnson named Joe Louis. If you put Johnson in the ring with anyone mentioned in the thread they would get knocked out!

saying Pryor was alltime is excessive....great fighter though...
johnson has to be respected but the art of pugilism was just in its infancy when he fought so to say he'd knock out Ali or Tyson is speculation.
Ray Robinson beat so many good fighters in a 12 year period where he won 125 consecutive bouts.. Its just unbelievable to think a fighter could go that long without slipping up at least once....
