I agree with you 100%, but I have also seen unions wield their power too far and cause harm as well....

To flip it though... I know people who work for non-union shops and get cheated, used and abused all the time...and they are things that would not happen if they had a strong union.....

I have been in the Teamsters Union and the IAFF(one of if not THE strongest unions in the country).

While I recognize and appreciate everything Jamie listed in regard to Unions, they themselves, just like their fat-cat executive counterparts, became so bloated, jaded, and greedy that they ended up fucking themselves (and us) in the long run.

Perfect example:

My Dad retired after 37 years at GM. The assembly plant he worked at, like most, were fucking huge. We're talking so big that there were sections of the plant that no human being had stepped foot in since the plant was built 20+ years prior. Well, some union folks found some of these catacombs and rigged up running water, electricity, other creature comforts, and proceeded to spend their days (on the clock) drinking whiskey, watching porn, and snorting coke. Plant management discovered them, put in CC Cameras and caught them red handed and subsequently fired them.

For good cause, no?

The union got them their jobs back.

Greed on both ends (management and union) doomed us all...

Ultimately, unions are a good thing, and have been a good thing (as Jaime stated above).

It would be nice if there was a way to have a system of checks and balances for the ones who get too big for their britches. They can also cause some serious damage to the companies that employ the workers. Rare, but possible. And in general, underachieving employees are hard to get rid of, and motivation can sometimes be an issue.. I've been in a few unions over the years and kind of see both sides of the pro/con argument.

Edit: and what Elf said is the bad part- and why checks and balances of some sort would be nice.
