Manziel to CFL

Recommended Posts

Its not uncommon for CFL teams to pick up the rights to American players "just in case" they become available to play up in the Great White North.  These rights almost never get exercised, though there will always be an Andre Rison or Ricky Williams or Chad Ochocinco or Andrew Hawkins who heads up north to try to resurrect their careers.  But 9 times out of 10 (hell, 99 out of 100) the CFL team who holds the rights to a specific NFL player almost never gets that player.

But something weird is going on in Hamilton (ON).

The Tiger-Cats, who holds the rights to NFL laughingstock Johnny Manziel, has been making moves to seemingly free up room on their roster (and their salary cap) to bring that idiot up to play for them this season.  The Ti-Cats have just traded away their starting QB.....

Hamilton Tiger-Cats trade QB amid reports of negotiations with Johnny Manziel

The CFL approved a contract between the Tiger-Cats and Manziel if they're able to agree on a deal
by Kevin Skiver    18h ago, CBSSports.com

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have traded their quarterback Zach Collaros to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for a second-round draft pick, thus clearing the way for Johnny Manziel to sign with the Ti-Cats. Last week, the CFL said that if Manziel comes to terms with a new team, it will allow the contract, making the timing of the move conspicuous.

Collaros is expected to be franchise quarterback for the Roughriders, while the Tiger-Cats have been reported to be in negotiations with Manziel. Hamilton is also looking to re-sign starter LB Jeremiah Masoli, who played in every game last season.

Keep in mind, Collaros likely would have been lost regardless of the Manziel side of things. The move also sheds salary for the Tiger-Cats, who likely would have lost Collaros in free agency. However, the move is certainly indicative of a Money Manziel age approaching in the CFL, and people have taken notice.

Hamilton has won eight Grey Cups, but it hasn't won any since 1999. Perhaps a change of scenery will do both Manziel and the Tiger-Cats well, as Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner who was drafted by the Browns in 2014 and played in 15 games for them in two seasons, looks to resurrect his career with a team that could really use a spark.

Never liked Manziel but if this actually happens, I can see myself tuning into some cfl this year. Id be interested to see how he fares.

Updates:

1 - Manziel was signed by Hamilton, made it through training camp, and onto the roster as the #2 QB backing-up Jeremiah Masoli (lol!)

2 - After 6 weeks on the bench without playing a down, Hamilton traded Manziel to the Montreal Alouettes just this week as part of a package deal.  Montreal is in last place, so Manziel should feel right at home.

Johnny Manziel off to last-place Alouettes in five-player trade

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have traded quarterback Johnny Manziel to the Montreal Alouettes, reuniting him with the coach who recruited him to Texas A&M.

Manziel, offensive tackle Tony Washington and offensive lineman Landon Rice were sent to Montreal in exchange for defensive end Jamaal Westerman, wide receiver Chris Williams and first-round picks in 2020 and 2022.

"We have acquired an exceptional quarterback with undeniable talent," Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed said in a statement. "With his great mobility, his athletic abilities and his instinct we believe that he will have a positive impact on our offence."

Manziel, 25, never saw the field for Hamilton, which has been led by quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli tied a CFL record with nine straight 300-yard passing games before the team's Week 5 bye. Manziel will play for first-year Alouettes coach Mike Sherman, who recruited him to Texas A&M in 2011 as the Aggies' head coach. Manziel redshirted in 2011 and went on to win the Heisman Trophy the following season under new coach Kevin Sumlin.

It's Johnny Time!!!

Manziel led the Alouettes to a nailbiting 50-11 loss in his debut this weekend.  His numbers in the 39-point defeat were impressive: 11/20 for 104 yds, no TDs and 4 INTs.  QBR of 30.0

Those numbers compare to his first start for the Current Browns, when he led them to a narrow 30-point defeat at home to the Bengals.  10/18 for 80 yds, 0 TDs and 4 INTs.  QBR of 27.3

He's back!

Alouettes released him, CFL gas banned him.  Nobody is talking about why....
