^ If it is a 1 year contract instead of the tag then that means they can tag him next off season at the first tag rate. Which is even lower (better). 😎

Please pardon my ignorance on franchise tags and timelines, but if he signs the tag, then doesn't that limit the time frame that the Bengals have to negotiate a new contract and once you're in season, you can't negotiate? That is my understanding.

Whereas, if this is a contract and not the tag, then they can negotiate an extension or a new contract anytime, including during the season (even though the Bengals don't like to do that).

Is that correct or am I imagining things?

I believe so. However, it is still unclear if Tee even signed a new contract (rather than the tag) or if the Bengals twitter was just being cheeky in wording it that way. 🤔

I think he likely just signed the tag personally.

This is partially true. There is a deadline in Mid-July (though I can't find the exact date) that is an absolute cut off for teams being able to sign franchised players to a contract extension beyond the 1 year tag amount. The player signing or not signing the tag has no affect on this deadline. So as of now, Tee can still sign a long term extension. Once that date passes, he can not.

I'm not sure I understand this as an answer to her question as this is the case with the tag yes, but if Tee didn't sign the tag but instead signed a 1 year contract, that still gives the Bengals the chance to sign him long term during the season (even if they don't like to do that) no?

Sorry you're right, this is under the assumption that he signed the tag and not a 1 year contract which would make no sense to me anyway. I was just clarifying the timing as it's not as big of a window as having until the start of the season.

The only reason I could see them signing him to a 1 year rather than the Tag is that for both parties it lets them continue to work a long term deal without being under pressure of hitting that Mid-July date.
