Is the definition of poverty-level consistent for those years? If it has changed, was the new definition retroactive to the 2000 figure?

ETA Incidentally, that website name sure makes it seem like a credible and unbiased source.

you would have to get ahold of the U.S. dept of commerce who provided the figures

The website is not tabulating their own data ... they are just making the graphs ... and yes it is no suprise that an anti-Bush site that cares about the looting of the U.S. = would report such numbers to warn us. Who do you expect to ? FauxNews ? Or maybe the govt themselves ?

Uh, since they claim to be getting all the info from the Dept of Commerce, in a way it would be from the gov itself. I'm just a bit incredulous about things like this that appeal to the emotion in such a way. I tend to disbelieve them when things are so in favor of one side and so against another. I'm not saying it isn't all accurate, but some of them don't appear to make any real economic sense or state things in an out of context way (for instance, the one with those who benefit from the tax cuts, since those at one end pay almost nothing and those on the high end pay almost everything.

Again, I'm not saying it isn't true--just that a little subtlety on their part would go a long way.
The sad thing about the state of affairs is that even today, if at a campaign rally a republican was to declare "...And I'm gonna lower taxes!" he would be met with rousing applause. Sadly, "I'm gonna balance the budget!" just doesn't have the same verve.
That's one of the major flaws in the system. Popular decisions aren't usually correct. A tax increase, plus true elimination of several government programs, would be necessary to save the country from fiscal ruin. That is political suicide and won't be done. The ship of state will continue to sink beneath the murky waters.

Balancing the budget is for pussies. Did you notice that Ross Perot pronounces his name the french way? I rest my case.

That way, you can never achieve perpetual dynasties.
Exactly !

and also the Estate Tax does do this in a way ...

The Estate tax says that when a rich fuck dies ... that the state takes their taxes before giving his trust fund bitch nose kids their money to run off to Cancun and snort coke off of urinals with.

But Bush called it the "Death Tax" .... and Americans said "Oh death ... that's bad .... now let's go bomb Iraq"

I still say that if you worked hard for your money (and already paid taxes on it), you should be able to do with it as you wish upon your demise.
That goes for the uber-rich, too, I don't give a flying fuck if so-and-so's Daddy left him billions and then he leaves it to his children. Why should ANY of that money go to the government when HUGE tax percentages on it have ALREADY BEEN PAID?
Look, I didn't create the current tax system, it is what it is, but you cannot dodge the fact that the sorta wealthy, the wealthy and the VERY wealthy pay MOST of the taxes in this country, which in turn provide services, opportunities, etc to less-advanteged people so that they at least have a shot at making a decent living for themselves.
It isn't that we aren't taking in enough tax money....it's HOW it's being spent.

Anything higher should be taxed.
Why? Why shouldn't you get to keep the fruits of your labor? What's wrong with dynasties?

Are you saying the gov't would just sit on the $$$ and not spend it? I think the gov't creates plenty of jobs. Plus, I would rather a government decide how to spend the money instead of one family. That sounds alot like the Kingdom-Serf relationship BJ was talking about earlier.

You should read a collection of Lenin's directives sometime. I know they have translations available of his letters and orders after he seized power. For such a brilliant man (and no one can deny that), his ruling were pretty lame. "There must be terror, ecnomic terror, and more terror..." They were pretty bad. Good think he died when he did, or the Union might have collapsed around him.

I think that very few people can be both great revolutionaries and great leaders--usually it's one or the other. Although there are a few exceptions. Lenin was good at seizing power--not at exercising it. Stalin was not good at being a revolutionary--but he was a brilliant albeit bloody leader.
