Jason Posted June 7, 2007 Report Share Posted June 7, 2007 U of I provost Hogan not a finalist Interviews planned with 5 contenders for presidency By ERIN JORDAN REGISTER IOWA CITY BUREAU June 6, 2007 Iowa City, Ia. - University of Iowa Provost Michael Hogan failed to make the cut as one of five finalists who will interview next week for the presidency of the university, but Purdue University Provost Sally Mason apparently is one of those finalists. Sources at Purdue in Lafayette, Ind., said Mason is among the five final candidates for the U of I job. She has been Purdue's provost since 2001 after serving 21 years at the University of Kansas. Finalists for the U of I presidency will visit the Iowa City campus next week for private interviews with the Iowa Board of Regents and 90-minute public interviews, the board's executive director, Gary Steinke, said Tuesday. Mason, who was recently passed over for the Purdue presidency, did not deny that she is a U of I finalist. "I very much appreciate the interest that you have in this topic, but I think that any questions you have on the search should be directed to the University of Iowa at this point," Mason said in an e-mail Tuesday. Hogan was one of four finalists for the U of I presidency during the first search last November. The Board of Regents rejected the entire slate of finalists, saying the candidates did not have enough experience in the health sciences. The regents said last year they wanted a sitting university president in the pool of candidates to succeed David Skorton, who left the University of Iowa to become president of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. [b]Two such incumbents whose names have been mentioned in academic circles in connection with the U of I search are Nancy Zimpher, president of the University of Cincinnati,[/b] and Larry Penley, president of Colorado State University. Neither has withdrawn from consideration for the Iowa City job. Longtime U.S. Rep. Jim Leach, who represented Iowa City in Congress for 30 years, also has been mentioned as a possible candidate to succeed Skorton. Leach is traveling in China this week and has not commented on that speculation. University provosts, the highest academic officials under a university president, traditionally are popular choices to move up to the top job. Several other provosts at Big Ten and Big 12 conference schools said Tuesday they are not finalists in the U of I search. "I am a graduate of that superb school, and I spoke to the committee to provide them with advice, but I made it clear that I was not available at this time," said Richard Lariviere, provost at the University of Kansas. Other provosts who said Tuesday they are not U of I candidates are Rodney Erickson of Penn State University; Linda Katehi, University of Illinois; E. Thomas Sullivan, University of Minnesota; and M. Duane Nellis, Kansas State University. The regents decided earlier this week to move a regular meeting scheduled for June 13 in Des Moines to Iowa City so they could interview the presidential candidates on June 12-13, Steinke said. The change was made to accommodate the regents' hectic schedules, he said. The U of I Faculty Senate released a statement Tuesday saying there was concern the regents would prejudge the candidates before the conclusion of the on-campus visits. "We have confidence that the search committee will work effectively with the regents to resolve this concern so that with the input from the campus community the regents can select the best candidate to serve as our president," the statement said.
