another computer question

Recommended Posts

I went to install a game for my daughter yesterday and it said there wasn't enough room on my hard drive. I went to check it and it is showing that i have 2 hard drives. One is drive c and the other is drive d. It is showing a 29.2 gig on drive c and a 203 gig on drive d. The question i have is if i have that much room on the other hard drive, can i install games and stuff on it?

yes. On a side note, what game needs more than 29.2 gb of free space?

That little room on your OS partition will cause problems eventually. I would recommend that you move some files from C to D, and maybe even move your swap file from C to D to free up space.

I can walk you through the swap move if you need...

what he said. you'll have issues, right when you really don't want to have them...

And, when you're installing most anything - don't take the default path!!! Force it over to the D: partition / drive.

If anyone else uses steam... Install it to a seperate paritition. if you ever have to reload windows you can run steam from the directory no problem.

That is what i'm doing in windows 7. crysis had to install a couple things, but that was it.

Windows usually gives it the first available drive letter(other than a,B).

So if you have a formatted c & D drive when you install windows, it will probably be E.

You can easily change drive letters around also.\

I know when i use to setup servers, i would assign the cd drive the letter R because the likelhood of that drive letter ever being needed was pretty low.

I like assigning drive letter Z.

Only because it seems so lonely...

I understand that, I just think it's odd. I've never seen any computer that wasn't home made that bothered to have the optical drive labeled anything but D... Perhaps I made the wrong assumption that this was a store bought computer.

What is the total size of your C drive?

Do you have a bunch of pictures, music, porn, etc?

So your secondary drive is /dev/hda? Why not /dev/hbd?[/quote]

No, that's the CD drive.

I misread the post...

To help out in case any of this sounds confusing: You physically have only one hard drive, but when it was originally formatted, it was logically divided into two parts. That means that the operating system sees it as two drives. Older versions of Windows could only access hard drives up to a particular size, and when hard drives larger than it could handle emerged, they had to be partitioned in order to access the entire available space.
Unless you are still using Windows 95 or earlier, there is no real reason that a hard drive needs to be partitioned. As mentioned before, it may actually cause you problems down the road. Some people do it for organizational purposes, but there is no technical need for it. If you ever get around to, or need to, reformat your hard drive, consider removing the partition and using it as one drive.

Find all of your pictures, videos, and non-system\program files and move them to the bigger partition.

Let me know how much room that frees up. If need be we'll move your swap file. It's not a hard process, but does require a reboot.
