So the new Apple OS X is out today

Recommended Posts

So the new Apple OS X is out today and now we can watch the Hype Machine that is Steve Jobs convice you that they are the innovators and that Microsoft is nothing more than Petty theifs....

So Im looking on their site and here are the new features...

Spotlight (A faster search tool), ok so they wrote a better aglorythm for the indexing your documents so you can search for them faster...(this has been talked about for years in the forthcomming Windows... No innovation, they just came to the market with it 1st)

Dashboard (Widgets that allow you to get information from the internet, brought to your desktop.... Uhm didnt people in the Windows world complain about this with Active Desktop when it was introduced in Internet Explorer 4....close to 10 years ago)

Safari RSS (A new way to bring news to you... Applications in the Windows world exist for this already, but if Microsoft put them in Windows people would complain that they are "bundling sofware and using their Monoply....lucky for Apple they dont have to anwser to the DOJ....oh wait?)

iChatAV.... MSN Messanger can do Audio/Video chat and has been able to for a while now.

Quicktime 7.... See Media Player 10

Automator .... Ok Apple put a pretty face on something widows can do if you know how to write batch files.

.MAC Sync.... So you can store you documents online... I can do that with gmail, by emailing them to my own account, what's the big deal? You can also sync your Calander and Contacts ect online .... See Outlook and Hotmail intagration.

Mail.... Ok they have a eMail client now...Wonder if MS would get in trouble if they included a copy of a full blown outlook with windows

I have a great respect for Jobs' ability to hype a product and make the "faithful" belive they are getting something Windows cant do. Both companys steal from each other. Again I say it, Apple offers me nothing I cant do or get from Windows.

Ok Mac faithful, bring it!! :P

Been there done that, what's better? Short anwser, nothing. There isnt anything that I can do on a Mac that I cant do on a PC, even graphics and video can be done on PC's. Many Avid video machines are and have been moved to the PC world as well. Apple makes good machines and good a OS, but its nothing worth switching over.

Really what I don't get is that Apple can put their own operating system on their own computer with their own programs built into it. You cannot build your own Apple computer, you cannot install Apple on your PC without going through 532 1/2 steps to do so. You buy an IPod, use ITunes. The list goes on.

Where are the lawsuits against this?

Yet, in Europe, Microsoft is sued for hundreds of millions because Windows Media Player came pre-installed on their own operating system. Honestly, I would be pissed if my OS didn't have Windows Media Player installed on it already. How else am I going to view online porn? Please not quicktime, that crappy player.

It's not that OSX is a bad system, its not, but the Apple faithful have a snobery about them because they think its superior....far from it, it offers me NOTHING that I cant get on Windows.

Pardon the pun, but I won't compare Apples to Oranges. Each system is unique and has it's own strengths. I have a Mac and a XP machine and use both. Macs are rock solid but suffer in certain areas because they appeal to a smaller market. XP machines are everywhere and come in every shape and size. The choices are endless and that alone leads to huge problems.

Considering the horrendous grammatical errors in that post, it would seem XP is quite capable of also catering to idio... :)

As someone who uses his computer mainly for gaming and 3D modeling and animation using Softimage, there is no way in hell I can switch over. Plus, I can build a PC for about $800 that will blow any Apple away.

Naw, Im just poking the preveriable stick at the dog, I love these Apple guys who think the system is far superior... It's a decent OS but it really doesnt have anything I cant do with Windows, and has nothing that would make me want to switch.

Final Cut Pro...Only runs on Mac. :(

Other than that, no, unless you want a one button mouse, no need for the Mac.

There is 1 thing OS X offers that Windows does not. Since switching to OS X, my computer has not loked up once. Exporer still crashes every now and then (but that is not Mac software) but my computer has not crashed at all. And it has been over a year.

Uh - no. PC processors are still 32 bit. My G5 is a 64 bit processor. That gives a lot more capability, memory potential, and speed.

The mac gives you the ability to be creative, out of the box, without much hassle.

That's pretty much the bottom line for me. I'm a network administrator (windows environment) by day. Musician, & creative person by night.

Don't get me wrong, there are things I use my PC for that wouldn't allow me to get rid of it. Well, mainly just playing games. But from the first day I got my mac I have been more productive on it than probably years with a PC.

The first thing I did was fired up iMovie (I know windows has a movie maker, but it pretty much blows) and created an HD DVD Slideshow of pictures taken from shows I had done in the past set to the music we were playing at the time. Added a splash of pretty nifty effects and sent it out to the people who used to play in that band together. Somehow that video seems to come out at any party I go to where those people are involved. Pretty good feeling for something I did the first time I fired up my mac.

Then I fired up Garageband and created a song or two. It's a pretty slick program to start recording music with. I prefer Digital Performer (which is also mac only), but you can't beat the simplicity and features for Garageband which comes loaded on any new mac for getting your ideas down.

There are also some pretty innovative programs, the likes of which I have never seen on PC. To be fair, there are plenty of programs on PC which are not made for mac. There seems to just be some incredible innovation in some of these mac programs though. There are a couple specifically that come to mind in Quicksilver and VooDoo Pad.

Quicksilver is an applauncher with incredible usability. Say I want to open a document called "Bengals Rule.doc" I could hit ctrl-space and start typing the name and it would come up. Or if I wanted to open it "Tofu" (Which is a neat program also), I would type in the letters for my documents until it comes up (most of the time only after a couple of letters) then "tab" then type "ow" and "tofu" and it will launch in Tofu. I use a lot of shortcuts in Windows and I really wish this program were made for windows too.

For the sake of size and not really wanting to type anymore I won't continue much further. I used to not have any interest in mac as well. And it will probably not ever fully replace my regular PC. But, after I tried it out, as a semi-creative person I couldn't ignore that out of the box this thing gave me the ability to do so much so easily. And I think that's the point.

Ps. Please don't flame me.
