Our most underrated player and coach?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I just found this forum and it looks great. I wanted to make an interesting first post so I'd like to offer a question to all you die hard Bengal fans out there... Who is the Bengal's most underrated player and coach? IMO there are three players that really stand out to me as underrated professionals on our team: Kenny Watson, Carl Powell, and Reggie Kelly. Kenny Watson is the ultimate 3rd down back. Hes tough, quick, and smart. He brings a needed spark to our offense. Hes an above average reciever out of the backfield and can hold his own when it comes to pass protection. Carl Powell will never be a starter for our team but he is a hell of a contributor. If he can remain healthy he will play a big part in our defenses' success in 2005. He comes to work everyday and is a great locker room/veteran guy. Reggie Kelly is one of the best blocking TE's in the league. Hes not the fastest guy or has the best hands but he knows his role. Hes tough in the trenches and all of our young guys really look up to him. Bengal fans are constantly criticizing the coaching staff for our 'lack of use' in the tight end department. There are only so many balls to go around. We have tons of weapons on the offensive side of the ball and Reggie Kelly's blocking plays a huge role in our offensive success. I would take his blocking skills over youngsters that can stretch the field anyday. We have plenty of players/weapons who can do that...a la 85, 84, 80, 15, 89, etc. As for the Bengal's most underrated coach... hands down... Bob Bratkowski. Brat has brought an offense to Cincinnati that this city has never experienced. Bengal games are now fun. He single handidly brought Chad Johnson to Cincinnati. Rumor is Coach Brat stood on a table in the middle of the war room and begged to Mr. Brown and his fellow coaches: "We cannot pass on this guy!!" I love his playcalling.. he seems to always keep defenses on thier toes. Well, those are my votes, Im anxious to hear what you all think...

TJ Houshmanzadeh - smart, makes clutch catches has chemistry with Chad and Carson, hard working, overachieving.
Jeremi Johnson - one of the best blocking fullbacks in the league, big reason for Rudi's success.
Brian Simmons - smart and dependable, excellent in pass coverage, always does what he is supposed to do.

Coach is Darrin Simmons, the special teams coach. Shayne Graham and Kyle Larson were both undrafted, now they are a couple of stud kickers that are close to the best the Bengals have ever had. In 2002 the bengals were ranked 31st in punt returns, and 32nd in punt coverage, enter Simmons: 2003 - 12th in punt returns, 11th in punt coverage; 2004 - 12th ranked punt returns, 11th in punt coverage, 5th ranked kickoff coverage

Levi Jones-For someone who was a "reach", he's well on his way to a Pro Bowl season far ahead of the 2 tackles drafted ahead of him. Healthier, quicker and more athletic, I see him having a breakthrough season.

Deltha O"Neal- For someone who was such a bad CB, that Denver was attempting to convert him to WR, he's had a great year. If he can stay healthy, there's no reason he can't make the Pro Bowl again.

Darrin Simmons-Singlehandedly turned around the special teams. Both the kicking and punting teams are now solid, when they were liabilities before he came. Coverages have improved and they didn't give up a single TD last year.

Just to shake things up....

Player: Madieu Williams. His on field performances didnt even get him included in rookie of the year, even though his stats were similar to its winner (Vilma)

Coach: Ken Zampese. Made Kitna come back player of the year, helped Carson through growing pains...

And welcome to the board.

Player - Rich Brahm...if you watched the games last year you saw a definite improvement in the offenses play when he was in there at center.

Runner Up - Landon Johnson. The kid has talent, speed, and is always around the ball. Defense improved when he was in there at middle. I don't know what spot he will end up at (future replacement for Simmons, strong-side on passing downs, middle) but I believe he will be on the field for the majority of defensive snaps

better than Simmons at what? sure as fuck not football. On the field Brian Simmons = Albert Einstein. On the field Landon Johnson = Terri Schiavo. Out of all the Johnsons on this team you could have choosen, ya picked the worst one to fuck.

Player: Kevin Kaesviharn

Most versatile player on the team who plays with heart, yet gets trashed on here constantly. Maybe not starter quality, but if your starter goes down you can plug him in at either safety spot, or any corner spot and he seldom gives up a big play. Good special teams player too. At least that's what I, and apparently Marvin think.

Coach: Simmons

Most underrated player- Tory James. Only player in the league that goes to the Pro Bowler and has his fans questioning whether or not he should be starting. Did a great job last season, proving a lot of doubters wrong and hopefully will carry it over into this season.

Most underrated coach- Ken Zampese. Turned Kitna's career around, helped groom Palmer into a future Pro Bowler. Darrin Simmons is a close second.

I wouldn't say Brat as underrated. He still has a lot to prove to me. I often question a lot of his calls. A lot of times last year he should have put Palmer in the shotgun and didn't. Result sack. For that I still have my doubts. I definately have a better opinion of him than I did in the past, but I want to see what he does with all this talent first.
