Monday quick hits as Bengals open third OTA week

The Bengals opened their third week of organized team activities Monday with the first of four sessions that featured the return of rookie cornerbacks Dre Kirkpatrick and Shaun Prater to the field. Kirkpatrick, a first-rounder, has been battling a groin issue and Prater, a fifth-rounder, hadn't worked since the rookie minincamp.

DC Mike Zimmer admits changes to coaching staff (DBs/LBs) been tough. "Lot harder on me right now," he said. "Almost like first year here."

Update: Safety search on; Zimmer likes LBs; Rookie CBs return

Updated: 2:30 p.m.
It is a testament to how his players feel about him that as they trooped off the practice field Monday, the Bengals defenders let coordinator Mike Zimmer know they saw him holding court with the media.
That's because they know he'll give it as straight to the public as he does to them. And they won't be disappointed as he noted:
_He says Reggie Nelson is doing well at one safety, but those vying for the spot next to him have been up-and-down and he indicated no one has an edge. He wouldn't shoot down a scenario that had him playing three cornerbacks and Nelson.
But, "It's too early for stuff like that," Zimmer has been saying the three weeks the on-field practices have taken place. He did say Monday, "I'll play the best 11 and that may be linemen."
As for safety he said, "We've got to find out who is going to be the most consistent. Who can make the decisions on the run…The guy that gives me the most confidence for the other 10 guys on the field (is going to play)."
_He likes the looks of the linebackers, particularly some of the young ones like rookie middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict and first-year Micah Johnson, a Kentucky free agent playing both the middle and SAM.
"He looks dependable so far," Zimmer said of Burfict.
But he wishes he could get fewer mistakes out of backup SAM Dontay Moch. Moch, a 2011 third-round pick, has impressed this camp with his pass-rush skills but Zimmer can see how his lack of practice time as a rookie has hurt his transition from a defensive end at Nevada to a SAM backer here.
A foot injury and a space of migraine headaches kept him from appearing in a game last season and media reports last month said he's facing a league suspension. But even if it doesn't get overturned, Moch can still practice and play in games until the regular season starts.
_Zimmer says starting middle linebacker Rey Maualuga has looked good and has responded to the coaches emphasizing to him that he has to be more patient so he doesn't overrun plays. The other Rey, backup WILL backerVincent Rey, is coming off a solid special teams seasons and is trying to stick with the departure of Brandon Johnson.
"Vinny is Vinny. A smart guy from Duke. He's doing the right things. Good kid," Zimmer said.
Another guy impressed with the kid backers is Thomas Howard, the starting WILL.
"These guys don't make any mental mistakes. They get it," Howard said.
BOBBIE CLOSE TO PLAYING: It doesn't look like incumbent right guard Bobbie Williams is going to re-sign, but there he was on the Paul Brown Stadium field going through drills at the direction of rehab director Nick Cosgray after Monday's practice. Williams, who turns 36 in September, is coming off ankle surgery and says he plans on playing this year somewhere and that he's 85 percent back.
Asked if there have been any talks with him and the Bengals, he said he's been concentrating on getting healthy.
UPDATE: The Bengals opened their third week of organized team activities Monday with the first of four sessions that featured the return of rookie cornerbacks Dre Kirkpatrick and Shaun Prater to the field. Kirkpatrick, a first-rounder, has been battling a groin issue and Prater, a fifth-rounder, hadn't worked since the first day of rookie minincamp.
Kirkpatrick got hurt after the rookie minicamp and even though Zimmer said Monday he was "lost mentally," he thought he looked better than he did a month ago.
Prater said he's been dealing with a bout of knee tendinitis that cropped up in the weeks before Iowa's bowl game and as he prepped for the NFL scouting combine and other workouts, he didn't have time to strengthen it until he got here.
"I don't think I'm behind (in the playbook) because I've been in the meetings," he said.
Two more rookies, second-rounder Devon Still and sixth-rounder Daniel Herron, weren't on the field with unknown problems. How many teams would let an unsigned injured guy rehab and work out at their facilities like the Bengals are doing with Williams? Stay classy MB
fwiw, its happened a couple of times recently. The exact players escape me, but I know williams isn't the first.

I like hearing the positive early reports on Vontaze and Lamur. Those guys are going to be extremely inexpensive for the next 3 or 4 years and if they can develop into contributors without us having had to spend a draft pick on them, that is a huge bonus.

Still really early obviously, but a little troublesome that Mays is still so inconsistent and hasn't taken hold of the starting SS job at all. It's nice that we have so many other intriguing athletic young guys, but it would be great if one of them could really step up and win the job outright with steady above average play.

Not at all worried about any of the rookies yet, but if injuries continue to linger for these guys, it becomes a concern. It seems like many of the Bengals recent draft busts were guys who got behind the eight ball early missing practice time with injury and just never caught up (Chase Coffman for example). Dontay Moch, Brandon Ghee and Rod Muckelroy are other guys who had early injuries that set them back and are now facing what could be their last chances. Hopefully Prater, Kirkpatrick, Still and Herron can get over what's ailing them and avoid those issues.

Hansen Changes Tune After Call From Marvin

Posted by Dan Hoard on June 4, 2012 – 5:41 pm

When Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen was not selected in this year’s draft, he immediately started getting calls from NFL teams that wanted him to sign as a free agent. Oakland made such a persuasive pitch, that Hansen sent out the following tweet.
Headed to Oakland! Gonna be a raider—
Tyler Hansen (@THansen9) April 28, 2012
But 32 minutes later, Hansen changed his tune.
Hold on everyone not quite yet—
Tyler Hansen (@THansen9) April 28, 2012
So what happened?
“Marvin Lewis called,” Hansen told me. “I thought that if the head coach is calling me, that’s something special and that’s saying something. He was the only head coach that made the first contact and I figured that they really wanted me if he’s calling right after the draft. I actually committed to Oakland and told them that I was going to be a Raider, but then Coach Lewis called. I talked to my agent and he said that we hadn’t signed anything yet and nothing was official. So I decided that Cincinnati was the right place for me to be.”
Alright everyone sorry to mislead everyone but the last 30 minutes has been unbelievable, going to be a Cincinnati Bengal!!—
Tyler Hansen (@THansen9) April 29, 2012
How did Oakland react?
“It’s a business and they understood, but they weren’t happy,” said Hansen.
With Andy Dalton entrenched as the Bengals starting quarterback, and Bruce Gradkowski back as an experienced back-up, Hansen’s likely role in camp is to compete with Zac Robinson for the number three spot.

“We watched (Hansen) in the East-West Shrine game and I thought he was – by far – the best quarterback in that game,” said Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden. “He makes quick decisions, he’s accurate, and you can see that he’s tough because he took a beating out there. He has the ability in the pocket to make people miss and he has a good, strong arm – a lot stronger than you think. He can really throw it. He’s done some really good things.”
Hansen was 12-for-17 for 144 yards in that All-Star game after a solid senior season at Colorado under new head coach Jon Embree. Early in his college career, Hansen had to share snaps at quarterback with Cody Hawkins – the son of the head coach at the time Dan Hawkins.
“He was basically fighting the ‘Coach’s Son’ syndrome,” said Bengals radio analyst Dave Lapham who was the TV analyst for some of Hansen’s games at Colorado. “The coach’s son was the quarterback that he always had to beat out and a lot of people felt that Tyler should have played more than he did. He has the ability to extend and create plays – when a play broke down; he extended it and made something out of nothing. Sometimes the plays he created ended up being better than the called play.”
Like most NFL teams, the Bengals typically view their third quarterback as a developmental candidate. Hansen says a key to winning that job will be mastering Cincinnati’s offense.
“You have to be sharp in everything that you do,” Tyler told me. “You have to know answers to questions and you have to be quick with it. I think that’s the biggest challenge for me – learning this offense and knowing the adjustments that Andy, Bruce, and Zac already know. They’re ahead of me so I have to catch up.
“I think there’s a chance for me to make this team. As long as I keep competing and keep learning this offense every day, I think that I have a shot here.”
Despite going undrafted, Hansen wouldn’t be taking part in the Bengals OTAs if he didn’t have a shot to be an NFL quarterback.
“It doesn’t matter how I got here – just to get here is something special,” said Hansen. “On my very first day, I looked on the wristbands and saw ‘NFL’ and it was just a dream come true. That first day you’re like, ‘Wow…I’m here.’ Every day just keeps getting better and better.”

I feel these things too and love seeing positives from Burfict.

I was one who thought Mays could turn it around and still do, but like you stated its not good that he isn't penciled in as the starter yet, but I also think Sands could be a good starter in the league so we shall see

Barring injury or suspension, I don't see Lamur or Burfict making the 53, but I'm guessing there's a spot or two on the PS; same for Micah Johnson.

Re safety, I'm not too concerned yet. They are still installing the D. After the minicamp and early into TC, I think things will become more clear at how things are shaping up at S. If need be, I'd be OK with Jason Allen there- that was his position at Tennessee, and where he played early on in the NFL. It wouldn't be ideal, and I'd like one of the young guys to assert himself, but we will see.

On the rooks being injured, the guys I most want to get snaps are the ones who are getting them - Zeitler, Kirkpatrick (now back), and Sanu, because I think they will have the most prominent roles in 2012.

by Paul Dehner Jr., CBSSports.com
With a new DB coach (Mark Carrier) and difficult decisions to make with the overflow of corners, DC Mike Zimmer said he's spent nearly all his time with the DBs during OTAs. His presence has not gone unnoticed. "Man, I don't like it," S Reggie Nelson said, laughing. "You know you got him in the room. It's ... it's ... nerve-wracking."

by Paul Dehner Jr., CBSSports.com
The Bengals have several talented, veteran corners, but they're inexperienced next to Reggie Nelson at S. Could corners Nate Clements, Leon Hall or Jason Allen move to S? DC Mike Zimmer believes any of the three could handle the job. Bottom line: The best DBs will play somewhere. "I don't care (if my four best DBs are corners)," Zimmer said. "We're going to put the 11 best guys out there."

by Paul Dehner Jr., CBSSports.com
DC Mike Zimmer used his relationship as a coordinator in Dallas with CB Terence Newman to lure the free agent to Cincinnati after he was released by the Cowboys. Midway through OTAs, Zimmer's still wondering why the 33-year-old was available. "I like him," Zimmer said. "I can't figure out what's wrong with him. I've been watching seven days now."

As far as Burfict/Lamur, there isn't much depth at LB so I'd be a little surprised if one of them didn't make it, especially with Moch suspended to start and Rey M. also possibly facing a suspension to start the year. That leaves only Howard, Lawson, Skuta and Muckelroy (who isn't a lock) as veteran guys. We'll keep at least 2 more and its just guys like Vincent Rey who they're competing against.

I could see the opening day roster being Howard, Lawson, Skuta, Muckelroy, Burfict and one of V. Rey/Lamur/M. Johnson.

As for SS, I like that we have so many options and am not super worried about it. But I was hoping that the reviews of Taylor Mays would be more positive as he's the only true Safety on the roster that has much in the way of NFL defensive snaps under his belt. If we end up starting a rookie like Iloka or Sands, who has no real NFL experience, that is a bit of a concern, especially with a very important matchup with Baltimore week 1. And while moving a CB over there could be a last resort option, we start the year with a lot of power running teams and RBs like Ray Rice, Trent Richardson, MJD....ideally you have a full-sized Safety in there at least in the non-passing downs to handle those type of guys. Especially since Nelson is a smaller guy at FS. If it ends up being Nelson and Clements or Allen, you've got both Safeties as undersized 195-200 pound guys which is tough with all the big TEs and RBs.

With regard to the injured rookies, its not just a matter of their chances of immediate contributions that I'm worried about but their long-term prospects. We've seen a lot of guys that struggled with injuries in their first OTAs/training camps that ended up never contributing. For this draft class is going to live up to its potential, we need more than just the top couple guys drafted to make an impact. Hopefully they can get healthy soon and get their careers started in a positive direction.

That's the hidden cost of those early year ending injuries - losing the practices, training with the coaches, meetings. Missing that stunts the growth.

Interesting videos up on Bengals.com.

Most interesting to me was Bernard Scott's interview:
- route running is more "crispy" (like a Ritz cracker, I hope!); and
- saying flat out that the 2 Gs were the weak link on the OL last year. He's not saying anything that wasn't obvious, but still...
