Injuries keep 3 on sideline as Bengals open OTAs

CINCINNATI — The Bengals began their first of 10 Organized Team Activities practices Tuesday at Paul Brown Stadium with three first-round cornerbacks on the sideline.

But that was of little concern because Nate Clements (abdominal) and Dre Kirkpatrick (groin) are not expected to miss much time, and Leon Hall is well ahead of schedule in rehabbing the Achilles he tore in Week 10 last year.

And even with those three out, three other first-round corners — Jason Allen, Terence Newman and Adam Jones — were full participants.

“It’s a good thing that we’re all here,” said Jones, who was selected No. 6 overall by the Titans in 2005 and enters his third season with the Bengals. “I love to compete, so I’m ready. I have a lot of work to do, especially technique wise.”

Newman, the fifth overall pick by the Cowboys in 2003, and Allen (16th by Miami in 2006) have a combined 15 years of experience, but both said they felt like they are starting over in some regards after joining the Bengals as free agents this offseason.

“Different coaches like different techniques, and you’ve got to find out what they are and learn them and get better at them during the OTA time period,” Allen said.

“Just because you were a first-round pick doesn’t mean you’re going to pan out,” added Newman. “We have to go out and work just like everybody else. It sounds good. It looks good on paper, but at the same time, until you go out and make plays and contribute and help the team win games, that’s just what it is.”

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he expects Newman and Allen to be big contributors, and not just with their play.

“Terence is going to make us a lot better team defensively, and Jason has really got a lot of ability,” Lewis said. “You can see his physical tools and his mental tools. He understands the game, and I think they’re going to be good additions on the football team because they’re going to add both physically and cerebrally.”

All of the cornerbacks said they were looking forward to competing with one another for playing time, but none seemed as thrilled to be surrounded by so much talent as Kirkpatrick, whom the Bengals selected 17th overall last month.

“I’m trying to get around those guys as much as I can and learn as much as possible,” Kirkpatrick said. “I talk to Jay, I talk to T-New, I talk to all of those guys every day. Even in the meeting rooms, I’m looking back, asking questions. Everything I can learn, I try to take full advantage of it.”

Following the 10 days of OTAs, the Bengals will hold minicamp June 12-14.

I think I feel better about the Safety position now that we drafted Iloka. He has the size (almost) of Mays, and the agility of a CB. He'll be able to cover TEs... I think with him Mays, they'll be able to match up well with double TE sets teams may throw at us this year

Zimmer has been "joking" about playing three corners in lieu of one of the safeties for long enough that I think it might be time to consider that he's serious. Which could explain why we are stocking up on so many corners - including those that have played safety (Allen), those who are older and physical and can extend their careers by doing so (Newman, Clements), and those who have been described as Safety/CB hybrid types (Iloka).

The only thing that's strange about it is you'd think the actual traditional Safety would be more of a S/LB hybrid, because the CB/S hybrids can play the deep middle and cover better. Of course, we do have a number of S/LB types as well (Mays, Sands, Iloka, Miles).

Say we keep 10. Who goes from this list?

Kirkpatrick
Hall
Allen
Newman
Jones
Clements
Ghee
(Prater - think he absolutely goes PS)

Mays
Sands
Iloka
Miles

If they PUP Hall they could keep them all - but by the look of that backpedaling I'm not so sure that's going to happen now.

by Paul Dehner Jr., CBSSports.com
QB Andy Dalton impressed coaches and players with his leadership as a rookie last season, but in his second year his comfort with the role of leader of the offense has reached a new level. "Early on last year you do kind of feel things out," he said, "but I feel like I've gotten to the point where I can be more vocal out there."

CB Adam Jones, 28, hasn't taken part in OTAs since 2007 and after spending all of last offseason in a neck brace, he's prepared to enter the season as healthy as he's been in a long time -- six years, to be exact. "This is the best I've felt since '06," he said. "Body weight, strength, I feel good, man. I'm eager, man."

Nugent in house

Updated: 12:15 P.M.

During the only day open to the media this week, the Bengals were still down a bunch of cornerbacks. OC Jay Gruden likes the versatility to play WRs in multiple spots, as several in this year's group can play outside or the slot without slowing. That's a fairly common southern nickname.

Caldwell was at least able to, and did, line up outside and in the slot. Rome, like Chad, was pretty much the X full time.

It was a joke, I guess you guys are nicknamed Bubba too...LOL.

But as for Caldwell he frequently drew the ire of Carson in 2009 and 2010 for being out of position and not running the right routes which resulted in interceptions and decreased playing time. Also, I know someone who went to U of F with him and they said he was a nice guy who is a good football player but not the brightest guy you would ever met.

I wish him the best in Denver.

I don't think he's ever going to play safety, but I'd like to see him take some draws out of shotgun since he ran well at Rutgers. Just looked in 2009, he ran for 5.6 yards a pop and in 2010 he ran for 5.2 yard a pop and then had negative yards last year?

Had a 91 yard run in 2010. Another interesting note, last year he had 18 catches on 3rd and between 3-7 yards. This could be huge for us if it translates to the NFL. Could be a first down machine.

Bengals' OTAs reach halfway point

Battle for receiver spots still ongoing

A couple observations now that we’re halfway through the organized team activity and minicamp portion of the Bengals offseason program.

• The lockout actually was a benefit: So far the storylines of the OTA practices have been about the position battles at wide receiver and cornerback along with tracking how much improvement Andy Dalton has made.

It has also been an OTA where everyone is here, which was not the case in previous seasons. That also means it has been drama free which would have not been the case last year had there been a normal offseason.

Had there been OTAs, there would have been a circus atmosphere worse than the infamous Chad Ochocinco minicamp of 2008. There would have been a steady stream of national media polling the locker room on opinions about Carson Palmer along with every throw of Andy Dalton and Jordan Palmer being analyzed.

Ochocinco would have been traded or released by this point, but I don’t know if you could say the same about Palmer. Considering how adamant Mike Brown was about not trading Palmer, he most likely would have still been here. Some might point to last year’s draft where Jake Locker and Christian Ponder went in the top 12 as evidence that teams would be ready to offer a first- and second-round pick for Palmer before the draft, but Dalton’s development over the first six games also gave Brown the security of dealing Palmer.

It was during the first week of June last year that players gathered in Mason and at the University of Cincinnati to conduct their own workouts. Besides having one of the highest-attended player workouts, it allowed everyone to get on the same page and away from the glare of cameras.

Said Whitworth late last season when looking back at those workouts: “We were returning a team that had a lot of questions as far as who were going to be our leaders, who was going to be behind center or who was going to be here. It was important for a young team to get together and bond.”

• The receivers race: When handicapping the six receiver spots, it looks like A.J. Green, Jordan Shipley and Mohamed Sanu are locks. That leaves a mad rush among the other three spots.

With it being early June, Brandon Tate and Armon Binns have had solid offseasons, but a lot can change between now and the final roster cuts on Aug. 31. When it comes to Tate, a lot could depend on who emerges as the returners. Will Tate hold on to one of the spots or will Adam Jones and Marvin Jones overtake him?

No matter who the six are, offensive coordinator Jay Gruden thinks it will be a better group from top to bottom because of the versatility they have.

“It's good to have a variety of guys that can line up in a couple of different spots. I think that might be a little bit different than what we had last year,” Gruden said. “I think all our guys can line up inside and outside and not have a problem mentally. Not saying we did last year, but these guys are all very sharp and good route runners no matter where you put them.”

• Biggest surprise of the offseason: Considering that I didn’t have much of an opportunity to see him in practices last year, Binns continues to show in practices why the coaches were eager to try and get him into games last season.

The other big difference now is that Binns is getting to run the Bengals offense. Last season he was on the scout team meaning one week he was Larry Fitzgerald and the next Anquan Boldin.

Said Gruden about Binns: “I think he's a great football player. Just overall, he's got a great feel for the game. How to run routes, how to find holes, how to get open, make himself available to the quarterback. As much as Andy is a timing thrower, that's important. He gets in and out of his breaks in a hurry, he knows how to set the guys and obviously he's a big target with great hands.”
