Ravens: S Bernard Pollard has message for Bengals WR A.J. Green

With Baltimore beginning its preparation for next Monday's game against Cincinnati this week, safety Bernard Pollardoffered a message for Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green.

"When we see receivers coming across the middle, and we're in the right defense, we're going to smack you," Pollard said. "Obviously, you came across the middle against the wrong team."

Pollard's been known as a box safety throughout his career, someone who can stop the run and level receivers on short routes. In his first season with the Ravens a year ago, Pollard proved his coverage skills were better than advertised with a career high 13 pass deflections and one interception.

Always confident, Pollard's warning to Green doesn't go without respect for the second-year wideout out of Georgia. One missed read and Green can burn any defense deep.

"Having said that, if you miss (Green), the guy can hit a home run," Pollard said.

Monday quick hits: Lewis welcomes back injured; Kirkpatrick back to rehab; Rey returns

Posted 41 minutes ago

Geoff Hobson Editor Bengals.com

This is the day.

Monday, the first practice of the regular season, is the day Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis had in mind as he looked at his injured list in the preseason while prepping for next Monday's opener (7 p.m.-ESPN) in Baltimore.

Backup cornerbacks Adam Jones and Jason Allen, who played one preseason game between them, looked ready to go Monday, as did left end Robert Geathers after he hasn't practiced since July.

Before practice at a news conference Lewis said rookie cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (leg) is going to be lost to rehab for a few more weeks but he's confident Jones and Allen have overcome their muscle pulls. And with Geathers looking at making his team-leading 89th Bengals start if Carlos Dunlap can't go, Lewis is confident the nine year-vet won’t miss a beat. If last Thursday against the Colts had been real and not the preseason finale, Lewis said they would have played.

"I'm going to try it," said Geathers before practice, sidelined after arthroscopic knee surgery on Aug. 2.

"That's good and bad," said Lewis of his sidelined corners. "Their legs are fresh. That's what we want. Guys like Robert Geathers, that's the best thing we can do so we wouldn't have to wear him out out there. It's a good thing.

"Jason did everything he could do until he couldn't do it anymore because he was wore out because everybody else was out, but he showed enough when he was out there every day for two straight weeks before he got injured. Adam is going to be Adam. He's always going to deal with these kind of things and I think he just has to learn to overcome it. Their legs are going to be fresh and they'll be ready to run."

REY SAYS BENGALS, DEFENSE BETTER: Another guy who has been out the last month, middle linebacker Rey Maualuga (sprained knee) could have played last Thursday, too, but now he's ready to show that his team and his defense is better than the team that went 0-4 against Baltimore and Pittsburgh last year.

"Not being able to beat those teams last year, being 0-4, I think this year is a different mindset for us," Maualuga said. "I know we're a better team than we were last year. I know these group of guys that we have in this locker room that we're going to do something crazy this year. We're going to surprise some people."

Maualuga also says this defense is better than the one that allowed Ravens running back Ray Rice runs of 70 and 51 yards in last season's regular-season finale at Paul Brown Stadium.

"It's always about 27," Maualuga said of Rice's number. "Containing him and watching him and making sure we don’t let him out of our sights. If you're asking me if we're a better defense than then, yes we are a better defense."

Lewis agrees. He says they're better at safety and in the middle with rookie Vontaze Burfict backing up Maualuga.

Highlights from Monday afternoon’s first Marvin Lewis press conference of the regular season:

Opening comments … ”We had a good couple days, yesterday, today and obviously we have an extra day this week just formulating the football team. We are off to a good start, guys are in a good place, good state of mind with the excitement, anticipation of the season which is where we ought to be. We know the task at hand and the grind we are about to head into and all the challenges the season will throw in front of us. We’ve really been spending a couple days just dealing with a lot of that, talking about that, making sure for a lot of the new guys and young guys they understand what is ahead. So, it’s been productive by the time we finish today, a couple productive couple days and then we enter into the preparations to start the season later int eh week. I feel good about where things are and where we are that way.”

On Jeff Faine … “Good athlete, very aggressive guy. Strong, aggressive, good athlete, moves well on his feet. We thought he was by far the best option for us. To add another veteran player to go into the season this way so we felt like we’d be covered. Obviously, he’s hit the ground running here and spent a lot of time with Paul with the other linemen, with the quarterback since he’s been here to keep him trying to get up to speed on everything. He has an advantage because he played basically the same system in Tampa, New Orleans, most of the things are familiar. A lot of the terminology and things are familiar with him. So, that part, he’s kind of ahead of the curve that way. Same things true the same eyes and so forth, he’s done a great job of that. He’s been through all four preseason games with the guys in the room with him making him do everything. So he was the guy doing it in place of Kyle and Trevor. He’s really working hard at it and as we get later in the week I think there will be a sense of calmness that nothing has really changed. He’s just a new guy, but he’s been here from the onset by the time he gets done.”

On keeping seven wide receivers … ”I think I really felt like those guys earned their way on the football team. The guys we were competing with fro the last couple spots, they deserve the spots. In productivity on the field, productivity on offense, productivity on special teams. I can see where there is a role. When you look at the 46-man squad I saw where those seven guys all had a chance if they were in the 46 they’d be big contributors on Sunday. I think that was key. That is the beauty of training camp is and so forth, the preseason games. That’s why I think the preseason games are such a great thing. Guys get opportunities to play themselves on the football team. I think guys earned those spots. I think everybody felt good about that. We may be different than we were at times at other spots, but that’s where we are now. We got some other guys in the wings at those spots and we feel good about those guys. We feel right today that is where we are tomorrow we have a chance to be different.”

Can you see with the receivers activating different guys for different opponents? “I think we have an opportunity to activate guys based on their performances. I don’t know about per opponent. It may be how Jay (Gruden) envisions using them and how they work and the different combinations but I think the two rookies did a great job this preseason and (Ryan) Whalen has done great, (Andrew) Hawkins has come back and expanded his role, (Brandon) Tate and (Armon) Binns have done very well. All seven guys have been very productive throughout the preseason.”

How difficult was it letting Roddrick Muckelroy go? “Rod has really worked hard. He did a good job but right now there wasn’t another sport for him at this point.”

If Faine gets injured, can Trevor Robinson go? “Oh yeah. With Trevor no doubt. He’s taken every snap since he’s been here as an offensive center. We envision him as a center when we signed him. He’s great mentally. He’ll keep growing physically. Center, linebackers, tight ends they all get here a different way. Interior linemen they always don’t come through the draft and become good players. He’s got an opportunity to be one of those guys.”

On three of the cornerbacks not playing much in the preseason … “That’s good and bad. Their legs are fresh.
