DRE SALUTES CINCY: Dre Kirkpatrick's brief NFL career has been hounded by injuries, but his heart is certainly in the right place.

After donating backpacks over the weekend to a local elementary school, three billboards appeared looming over major highways signed by Kirkpatrick proclaiming, "Thank you Cincinnati."

Kirkpatrick, an Alabama cornerback who was the Bengals' first pick in the last draft, has practiced sporadically with a variety of ailments and head coach Marvin Lewis said Monday he's out a couple of more weeks as he recovers from a bone spur near his knee.

Kirkpatrick appears on the billboard in a suit and an orange tie with his six-year-old son Dre Jr., wearing a Bengals' tiger head sweatshirt.

"We call him, 'The Little Man,'" Kirkpatrick said. "It's something I wanted to do to show my appreciation for the fans supporting me and the organization giving me the chance to help bring a Super Bowl here and I wanted to give something back to the community."

FIRST PITCH: The most prolific rookie battery in the history of the NFL planned to team up to throw out the first pitch at Tuesday night's Reds game against the Phillies when quarterback Andy Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green, the first rookie duo to throw for 3,000 and catch for 1,000 yards respectively, respectively, got the call.

HARBS HAILS: Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, straight from the Cradle of Coaches at Miami of Ohio, who is putting up legendary numbers in his first four seasons as an NFL head coach, was in vintage game-week fashion as he heaped praise on individual Bengals in his Tuesday news conference.

But he wouldn't disclose if former Bengal Bobbie Williams or second-rounder Kelechi Osemele gets the start at right guard.

"Bobbie is another guy I used to make a point to go over and say ‘hey’ to and tell him how much we thought of him," Harbaugh said of past Bengals-Ravens matchups. "Bobbie is a special guy. It’s good to have him on our side. Bobbie is just great to be around every single day.”

Harbaugh said he's also made it a practice to give the same treatment to left tackle Andrew Whitworth after his battles with Pro Bowl sack ace Terrell Suggs.

“Every time we play them, I tell him, I go up after the game and say, ‘You’re a heck of a player,’ every single time, because it’s the truth," Harbaugh said. "He has just been one of the more dominant left tackles, and he is really underrated. Maybe he is starting to get his due now a little bit. He is a long, big, physical guy. He plays with a real nasty streak. He is tough to get around. He has perfect technique in everything he does. He is just a really good football player.”

Harbaugh is no doubt thinking long and hard about that right guard because of the presence of one Geno Atkins, Pro Bowl defensive tackle.

"He is really tremendously athletic. He’s really got quick feet. He is an explosive, quick, powerful guy," Harbaugh said. "He is a tough guy to reach. He gets on that outside edge of the guard and gets upfield. Sometimes when you move, and you kind of shift their defense a little bit, he’ll play over the center and play as a nose guard and do a great job. He’s a pass rusher. He had seven-and-a-half sacks last year. As an inside rusher, you don’t see that very often. I think he led the league with that. "(He is) really athletic guy.”

Interesting note from an ESPN chat

Scott (Dayton)

Jamison, if you had to rerank the guards taken in the draft this year by AFC North, how would you rank them?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN)

(10:57 AM)

Based on the personnel men that spoke with over the summer, most would take Zeitler over DeCastro, which surprised me.

First look at Week 1: Bengals at Ravens

09/04/12 at 3:59pm
• Written by jreedy

THE BASICS

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Monday; M&T Bank Stadium.

TV: ESPN (locally game will be on Ch. 12). Announcers are Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden and Lisa Salters

Preseason records: Both teams were 2-2.

Series: Ravens lead 18-14 and have won three straight

Bengals league rankings last season: Offense was 20th (19th rushing, 20th passing); Defense was 7th (10th rushing, 9th passing).

Ravens league rankings last season: Offense was 15th (10th rushing, 19th passing); Defense was 3rd (2nd rushing, 4th passing).

RAVENS TO WATCH

Joe Flacco has led the Ravens to the playoffs in each of his four seasons in the NFL. US Presswire photo

QB Joe Flacco: In his last three games vs. the Bengals he completed 46 of 65 for 525 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions with a 97.3 passer rating. Flacco has looked good this preseason considering that the offense has run more no huddle.

RB Ray Rice: He rushed for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns in both games last season, including a 191-yard, 2-TD output in Week 17 in Cincinnati to help the Ravens to clinch the AFC North title.

S Ed Reed: Has nine interceptions against the Bengals including one last year. With some of the rebuilding of the pass rush, it could be up to the Ravens secondary to shoulder more early.

KEY NUMBER: 10

Consecutive games the Ravens have won at home (and 18 of 19), posting the NFL’s second-longest active regular season home winning streak (Green Bay – 13). Including postseason, the Ravens own the league’s longest home winning streak (11 games).

CONNECTIONS

With UC: Head coach John Harbaugh was the special teams, TEs, OLBs and RBs coach (1989-94) and assistant head coach (1995-96) … Assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg served as the LBs, special teams and secondary coach (1992-95) … Senior offensive assistant Craig Ver Steeg was QBs and WRs coach (1990- 93) … Assistant special teams coach Chris Hewitt was a four-year letterman and a two-time All-Conference USA DB (1995-96) … ILBs coach Don Martindale joined the Bearcats’ staff as DEs coach in 1996 and later coached the special teams/LBs (1997-98).

ESPN adds a retired NFL Official to the team of Tirico/Gruden on Monday Night Football.

I assume he'll be doing Monday's game.

Ok. That sounds ominous. And wouldn't he be the first Bengal to tweet, since the ban, assuming he is still on the team? I know the one undrafted rookie WR tweeted as soon as he was cut.

I would guess that means he's going to get less PT than he hoped for with the signing of the new TE.

But that is just a guess.

Edit: Or did they sign a TE because he got hurt?

the ban was lifted yesterday so the mere act of him tweeting isn't a big deal IMO.

Ok. I missed that on the tweeting ban. But the tweet itself still sounds ominous. As Jason said it could be playing time because of the pickup of Quinn. But thats an over the top response if it is just about playing time, imo.

it could be completely non-football related too. Hopefully we never hear much about it again.

Cochart isn't eligible for the PS since he was active too many weeks last year.
Quinn is on the 53 man roster, not the practice squad.

I still think Cochart was who they intended to bring back yesterday but got thrown for a loop when Dallas claimed him. Now that he's available I think he'll be back if no one ahead of the Bengals claims him. They've already said Quinn won't play Monday, and Cochart knows the system much better and is more well-rounded.

Q&A with Cincinnati Bengals beat writer Joe Reedy

Every week, I hope to bring you a quick Q&A with someone who covers the Ravens’ opponent that weekend. On Monday night, the Cincinnati Bengals come to Baltimore, so I’m happy to start the season off by chatting withJoe Reedy, who has covered the Bengals as The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Bengals beat reporter since 2009.
MV: Andy Dalton was a pleasant surprise last season, becoming the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw 20 or more touchdown passes while starting in eight or more wins. In what ways has Dalton grown since we have last seen him?
JR: Dalton has always had confidence but he has improved on the deep passes by adding upper-body strength while improving his footwork. He has also been more secure in going to his receivers or other players on the offense and telling them if they were off on a play or what improvements they need to make. One of the few bad games that Dalton had in the regular season last year was that first game in Baltimore, so it will be interesting to see how much he has learned from that and what adjustments he will make against the Ravens defense.

MV: Where do you think the pass rush stands with Carlos Dunlap sidelined and Jonathan Fanane not back this year?
JR: Dunlap has been running on the side and is slightly ahead in coming back, but he remains questionable at best going into the game. Michael Johnson has added 30 pounds without losing his quickness, but expect defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to use linebacker Manny Lawson more in rushing off the edge. The other thing they have not lost is tackle Geno Atkins, who tied NFL interior linemen for the lead in sacks last season. Second-round pick Devon Still has also played well in the preseason.
MV: How has running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis fit into the Bengals offense and how do you see the carries being split?
JR: Green-Ellis is the same type of runner as Benson -- he's not going to consistently give you the long gains but what he does do better than Benson is on short yardage, red zone and he doesn't fumble. Green-Ellis is also a better blocker in pass protection. Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden would like to give Green-Ellis more passes out of the backfield while using Bernard Scott on series as more of a change of pace and quick threat to the outside. If I had to make a guess right now, I would say Green-Ellis gets 65 percent of the carries and Scott 35 percent with some third-down carries from Brian Leonard.
MV: Ray Rice rushed for 295 yards and four touchdowns in his two games against the Bengals last season. What do they need to do to bottle him up?
JR: The defensive line has to do a better job of getting penetration and the linebackers have to be more disciplined in sticking to their rushing lanes. Rey Maualuga did that twice last year in the second game against the Ravens.
MV: It has been 30 years since the Bengals had back-to-back winning seasons. Do you think with their recent success in the draft, the stability that Dalton brings to the offense, and their solid defense, they will buck that trend in 2012?
JR: It is their best opportunity since 2006 and the schedule is almost a repeat of last year where it is favorable early. After facing the Ravens, the Bengals get Cleveland twice, Washington, Jacksonville and Miami. They need to be at nine wins by December though because the final stretch is brutal with at San Diego, Dallas, at Philly on a Thursday, at Pittsburgh and then the finale against the Ravens here. The biggest questions though are consistency on offense and if the secondary can rebound.

Dalton down middle

Quick hits out of the Bengals locker room Wednesday before practice:

_Running back Bernard Scott (hand) says he won't play Monday (7 p.m.-Cincinnati's Channel 12 and ESPN) in Baltimore, but it sounded like he'd be ready for the Browns next week. Scott, who didn't play in any of the preseason games, says it's a matter of being in football shape and the fear is he'll get gassed.

_That means BenJarvus Green-Ellis is the feature back, but he's giving the same supporting cast answers. He's not the kind of guy that 's going to say he needs to ruin the ball 20-30 times a game: "I'll do whatever they want me to do 20 to 30 times a game...pick up blitzes...catch passes." ....

_Head coach Marvin Lewis lifted the Twitter ban he instituted just before training camp, saying it was a great way for his players to connect with their fans, season-ticket holders, and their charitable works. But clearly he set some guidelines and while he didn't elaborate he just as clearly sent the message of just being smart.

_If it's the Ravens, then that means Lewis is talking turnovers. He's always talking turnovers, but he brought that philosophy from Baltimore: "If you finish with one less turnover than your opponnent, then you can take 10-6 since 2000 in the National Football League right now."
