Bengals cleared of mishandling Joe Burrow's injury status following investigation

Burrow suffered a season-ending injury after a video of him wearing a sleeve was deleted

The NFL has cleared the Cincinnati Bengals of any mishandling of Joe Burrow's injury status after he suffered a season-ending torn ligament last month, an NFL spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Burrow was not listed on the team’s injury report going into the November 16 game against the Baltimore Ravens. The team posted a video on X, which appeared to show him with a soft cast on his right hand, but later deleted the post.

Burrow later explained that the cast was actually a compression sleeve, noting that it was not uncommon for players to wear them on flights due to potential swelling.

However, on Cincinnati’s touchdown drive in the second quarter, Burrow was seen in clear pain as he threw a touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon. He was replaced on the next drive, and the next day, the team announced that he'd miss the rest of the season.

Burrow, though, called the ligament tear a "completely new injury."

"The league reviewed all medical records, studied practice video from the week preceding the club’s Week 10 game against the Houston Texans and the Week 11 game against Baltimore, interviewed relevant medical personnel and Burrow himself before arriving at its conclusion," the NFL said in an email to Fox News Digital.

The league has taken injury reports more seriously in recent years, given the increase in fantasy sports and legalized gambling. The NFL reportedly warned teams in the spring meetings about reporting injuries properly.

The Bengals made Burrow the highest-paid player in NFL history with a massive five-year, $275 million deal when the season started in September, $219.5 million of it guaranteed.

Burrow missed most of training camp when he strained a calf. In 10 games prior to the wrist injury, he threw for 2,309 yards on 66.8% passing with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Cincinnati have split their two games without Burrow, losing to their AFC North rival Pittsburgh Stealers in their first full game without him, but upsetting the Jaguars in Jacksonville this past Monday night in overtime.

Since taking over, Jake Browning has completed 75.6% of his passes for 649 yards, three touchdowns, and a pick. Against the Jags, he went 32-for-37 for 354 yards.

There’s nothing to see here.

That’s the conclusion from the NFL regarding the question of whether the Bengals had concealed a wrist injury to quarterback Joe Burrow before he suffered a season-ending wrist injury during the Week 11 Thursday night game at Baltimore.

The NFL has announced that the Bengals did not violate the injury report.

“The NFL reviewed all medical records, studied practice video from the week preceding the [Bengals’] Week 10 game against Houston and the Week 11 game against Baltimore, interviewed relevant medical personnel and Joe Burrow himself before arriving at its conclusion,” NFL employee Tom Pelissero posted on X. “No violations.”

Despite this conclusion, there has been no clear explanation regarding Burrow wearing a sleeve that extended past his thumb while traveling to Maryland for the game against the Ravens. Making the situation specifically suspicious was the fact that the Bengals posted video of Burrow wearing the wrap, before deleting it.

The NFL’s investigation hardly counts as independent or neutral. If the league had found that the Bengals had hidden the injury, the league would have essentially engraved an invitation for a class-action lawsuit by those who made legal wagers based on the assumption Burrow was healthy — against the Bengals for hiding the injury, and against the NFL for negligent failure to develop and to enforce an effective injury report.

Thus, while many will crow that this counts as complete and total exoneration of the Bengals, unanswered questions remain. Those questions will only be answered if someone does indeed file a lawsuit and secures the ability to conduct the kind of investigation that would be precisely designed to find the needle in the haystack.

Meanwhile, the Stealers seem to have been found guilty of hiding evidence of a concussion suffered by TJ Watt on national TV Thursday Night.... to the point where he was given smelling salts and even a helmet with a tinted visor so none of the refs or cameras could see his pupils after the coaching staff and trainers sent him back onto the field.

But Florio is silent.

Either a double standard OR Mikey didn't have money on this game.

The problem with Watt and concussions is how can you tell because he looks like he was hit in the head

with a brick all the time.

The NFL can be a very odd organization at times. They worry about useless shit like this because if the possible effect on the gambling angle; yet they completely ignore the obvious officiating crisis that has a much larger effect on the gambling side of the business.

And they ignore that a high-profile insider -slash- spokesman has become so obsessed over this that it's beginning to look like he definitely lost money on that game.

If Florio or Rappaport or others like them are allowed to bet on NFL games, their reporting of breaking news - or their decision to suppress said reporting - may affect legal bets being placed, impacting the odds and skewing payouts in their favor.

Worse, if they end up losing a large bet, they may be encouraged to manufacture a "conspiracy" such as this one, claiming that info they would have reported upon was kept from them, and calling for a sort of Spanish Inquisition to root out those responsible. It helps them PR-wise, as they seem to be taking on the "big bad NFL" as a champion of justice, and solidify the perception of them being a victimized insider, thwarted from doing their job by a conspiracy to cover-up "the truth".  All of this is a lie, of course, if it turns out the motivation is due to a large lost bet....

Florio has lost credibility, and his PFT subscriber numbers are likely down since he began this irrational obsessive pursuit.
