MULLY Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 I've stated dozens of times before that I'm not a big baseball fan. I am wondering something though. Do the Reds and Pirates have a hate/hate rivalry similar to the Bengals and Stoolsamples? Just wondering, MULLY

Just wondering, MULLY
nope. the reds big rival was the dodgers, then baseball realigned and that was killed.
Jason Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 Back in the 70s, there was something of a rivalry with the Pirates. They played each other about every other year in the playoffs it seems. But that rivalry was much friendlier. When Johnny Bench was on his "Retirement Tour" pissburgh gave him a night just short of what the Reds gave him. They even gave him a red baseball cart. As of now, our biggest rival is either the Cubs or the Cards, but it doesn't compare at all to the rivalry we had with the Dodgers.
natethesnake Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 I would say right now our biggest rival would be the Cards, only because they have been the team in the division the last several years. The Pirates have been AWFUL since the early 90s... we are talking pre-Marvin Bengals level awful. Kinda hard to have a rivalry with a team that sucks ass.
MULLY Posted August 22, 2006 Author Report Posted August 22, 2006 So the Cubs or Cards fans aren't trailer trash like the Stooler fans? Is there any rivalry that compares to the Bengals/Stealers? I'm talking flat out hating those lousy fuckers. MULLY

The only real intense rivalry in baseball is Red Sox/Yankees.
Guest Bengals1181 Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006 Jason, gotta disagree. when it comes to the Reds, there are quite a few asshole Cubs and Cards fans. Its no way near as bad as the stealers, but its not non-existant.
Jason Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006
Jason, gotta disagree. when it comes to the Reds, there are quite a few asshole Cubs and Cards fans. Its no way near as bad as the stealers, but its not non-existant.
There are asshole fans for every team. But I just don't get the sense that the Cubs/Reds rivalry is all that intense. Partly because there still really isn't that much history behind it yet. It certainly doesn't compare to any of the Bengals rivalries, and certainly not Sox/Yanks. I also don't think it's asshole fans that make a rivalry. It's the teams.
|Bunghole| Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006 In this modern era of pro sports where players allegiances to teams are often dictated by the size of their contracts, it tends to water down rivalries between teams and individual players unlike in the past, like the old Cowboys/Redskins, stealers/Cowboys, reds/Dodgers....the fans are the ones that have created the rivalry intensity now for the most part, at least in my estimation. Although Sox/Yankees is pretty strong. And I think that after what happened to Palmer last season, you could say that there is a rivalry brewing between the stealers and Bengals that has carried over from the fans hatred into some of the players.
MULLY Posted August 22, 2006 Author Report Posted August 22, 2006 Cool. I was just wondering. I knew the Sox/Yanks rivalry was pretty bad but was wondering if it's in all sports or if it's just us and the Stoolsamples. I think the hate for Pissburgh went over 10 fold after last season. And their fans are real trash. God I hate those fuckers. I hate the fans more than I hate the team. MULLY Let me add, since my post isn't clear enough, I was just wondering if the Bengals/Stealers hate drifted over to baseball too. Do Reds fans, that are also Bengals fans, despise the Pirates like they do the Stoolers just because it's Shitstainburgh?

There really isn't that big a rivalry now, and when there was, it was friendly. Back in the late 70's through the 80's, L.A. was despised I remember even going to a game at Riverfront and making slanderous signs on small posterboard disparaging Steve Garvey by calling him Steve "Gravy", and referring to Dusty Baker as "Dirty" Baker - what can I say, we were maybe 7 or 8 years old at the time. Now, I have no problem with the Dodgers, although I do hate the Dusty Baker managed Chicago Cubs, so some continuity still exists.

I miss that rivalry. Steve Garvey. Ron Cey. Etc.
Jamie_B Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006 Before the breakup into 3 divisions I HATED the Braves, because it always seemed we were just a few games shy of making the playoffs right behind them. Now its the Cards.
