THE SERIES
Browns lead, 33-32, Bengals lead in Cincinnati, 20-13, 3-3 at PBS.
NOTEWORTHY
Hall of Famer Bill Willis, who along with teammate Marion Motley helped integrate pro football with head coach Paul Brown’s 1946 Browns, is to be honored Sunday at the stadium bearing his coach’s name. An exhibit featuring Willis at the Freedom Center next to PBS opened Friday. Willis is considered the game’s first great middle linebacker.
Willis, 84, retired in 1953, 17 years before the first Bengals-Browns game. If the Bengals win, the series is going to be tied for the 12th time. Believe it or not, three other NFL series that have at least 50 games are that close. The Cards lead the Eagles, 54-53-5; the Vikings lead the Packers, 45-44-1; the Lions lead Tampa Bay, 26-25.
A win Sunday ties the Bengals’ longest winning streak in the series at four, going back to 1973-75 and 1989-90.
The Bengals are 2-3 in home openers against the Browns, the last one coming when Travis Prentice and the Browns spoiled the PBS debut, 24-7, on Sept. 10, 2000.
Bengals running back Rudi Johnson has averaged 165.7 yards in the last three games against Cleveland, and quarterback Carson Palmer has a passer rating of 92.4 and a 3-1 record against the Browns.
Palmer makes home debut

Scouts Inc.: This divisional battle of the two Ohio franchises is the Bengals' home opener. The last home game the Bengals played was their wild-card loss to pissburgh, when Carson Palmer blew out his knee. Well, Palmer is back and should cause the Browns all sorts of problems leading the Bengals' high-powered offense.

Cleveland has made great strides over the past two seasons to approach respectability, but the Browns still have their share of holes and their depth across the board is suspect -- not to mention they managed just three first downs in the first half at home vs. the Saints and were dominated in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

The Bengals are the opposite. Few rosters have a talent level close to what Cincinnati can offer and this is a game that the Bengals need to decisively win to further establish themselves as a powerhouse in the division.

Palmer makes home debut

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The Battle of Ohio has gone to the Cincinnati Bengals the last three times. The Cleveland Browns would like to reverse that trend.

The AFC North rivals meet on Sunday in the Bengals' home opener.

Rudi Johnson, who rushed for 2,912 yards the previous two seasons with the Bengals, is happy to see the Browns. He rushed for a career-high 202 yards here in a 58-48 victory over Cleveland on November 28, 2004. It was the second-highest scoring game in NFL history.

Last season, Johnson gained 295 yards on 56 carries in two games against the Browns - a 27-13 victory at Cleveland on September 11 and a 23-20 win here on December 11.

Johnson got the 2006 season off to a good start with 96 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown, on 28 carries in the Bengals' 23-10 win at Kansas City last week.

The Browns yielded 150 rushing yards in a season-opening 19-14 loss to New Orleans last week.

But what was probably most disappointing for coach Romeo Crennel was that the Browns failed to record a sack in the season opener. Last year, they managed just a league-low 23 sacks and Browns general manager Phil Savage signed former New England linebacker Willie McGinest and drafted linebackers Kamerion Wimbley (first round) and D'Qwell Jackson (second round) to help address that deficiency.

Putting heat on Carson Palmer and containing Johnson is a requisite for beating the Bengals. Palmer threw for just 127 yards and Chad Johnson was limited to five catches for 48 yards in the win at Kansas City, but the running of Rudi Johnson and a strong defensive performance was enough for Cincinnati.

Marvin Lewis, who is in his fourth year as Bengals coach, has meticulously tried to build the defense. Last offseason, Cincinnati signed defensive tackle Sam Adams and safety Dexter Jackson and used four of their first five draft picks in the draft on defensive players.

Lewis had to be proud with what he saw last week. The Bengals recorded seven sacks and held reigning AFC rushing champion Larry Johnson to 68 yards on 17 carries.

Justin Smith, a first-round pick in 2001, led the defensive performance with three sacks and fellow end Robert Geathers had two.

The hardest hit was delivered by Geathers. As Chiefs quarterback Trent Green went into a feet-first hook slide, Geathers came flying in and slammed his right shoulder into Green's chest, causing the quarterback's head to bang into the turf late in the third quarter. The hit left Green unconscious.

The game was delayed for 11 minutes while Green was carefully carted off on a stretcher.

Cleveland can be optimistic with the performance of tight end Kellen Winslow II, who played in his first regular-season game since September 2004 and caught eight passes for 63 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown, in the loss to New Orleans.

But Braylon Edwards, the team's first-round pick in 2005, was limited to two catches for 23 yards and Reuben Droughns, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, managed just 27 yards on 11 carries.

In his first full season as a starter, Charlie Frye completed 16-of-27 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions and scrambled six times for 44 yards against New Orleans.
I'm representing at a new bar here in Long Beach, Ca. Have no idea what kinda fan base there is over there but in Cali you can always expect a lot of ignorant Raiders fans who still think they're team can win the Super bowl even when they're record is 5-11

What really sucks is none of my friends like sports so I always go alone but after the first couple a beers, it's all friendly :D

Sucks they are out I wonder if Whitworth is playing LT or LG.

*EDIT*

Jones, Houshmandzadeh out
By GEOFF HOBSON
September 17, 2006

11:35 a.m.

With left tackle Levi Jones sidelined for Sunday’s home opener against the Browns, second-rounder Andrew Whitworth drew his first NFL start at left guard. Left guard Eric Steinbach moved from left guard to make his second career start at left tackle in replacing Jones and his bothersome sprained ankle.

The Bengals also scratched wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (heel) and Chris Henry got the start for the second straight week.

Also out for the Bengals were wide receiver Antonio Chatman, rookie linebackers A.J. Nicholson and Ahmad Brooks, and rookie defensive end Frostee Rucker.

TJ is the most reliable WR the Bengals have...

Capable of being relied on (to be injured a few games a season) Yep ; dependable (to be on the field for 16 games) Nope

Geathers look like a different player last game. The D line should have a huge game.

turds helmets are downrite fugly!!!
whats worse? cleveland never coming up with a logo for their helmet or Pittsburg having a logo on one side?? then you have gay pride purple in a pro football helmet. If it weren't for the Bengals, this would be the ugliest helmet division in the nfl..
