I was wrong, they really only show 3 in the PR dept but 12 in the Sales dept and the PR director Jack Brennan is the head of the Sales Dept.

Hilarious that there are 2 Browns listed as scouts

It is pretty funny though but it doesent make a difference how many people you have in the scouting department. As long as you get the players you're good.

Bengals actually have maybe around 20 scouts.

Those listed above PLUS every position coach and assistant (12), Marvin, Brat and Chuck, Mike.

Sure is a "small" scouting department....

Marvin has drastically improved our drafts as of late, but shit I remember through out all of the 90's it just seemed the Bengals just drafted guys who were All-Americans in college, or who had media hype. Now with Marvin we actually get steals late in the draft as opposed to busts early on. As far as the scouting department goes, I tend to think that one good scout is better than 10 bad ones. Greg Seamon seems to know what he is doing, and I'm surprised he still works for the Bengals considering what I've been told he makes compared to other scouts. I think that in the past Mike Brown just sort of drafted whomever he wanted. Now Marvin(someone who actually knows football) has a say and that helps.

But, if you sit up here and tell me that Mike Brown isn't financially tight-laced , then you are oblivious.

I love my team, but disapprove of the owner. He wants to win, but doesn't have the knowledge that Marvin does. Luckily Mike knows when to step aside now.

I wouldn't care. I'd still love the Bengals. I've loved em for 27 yrs without a title. Why knock 'em now??

That's 19 people doing scouting. Wouldn't that make possibly the BIGGEST scouting dept in the NFL?????

Cincy is notorious for having their position coaches and assistants do the scouting.

The Bengals scouting dept is not a problem, it's just fodder for retareded fans who want to buy into it.

Well, at least Debbie LaRocco's hotter than Pam Papsdorf! You know, if Pam married ex-Bengal great and all-time draft choice Travis Dorsch, she'd be Pam Papsdorf-Dorsch. Yikes, try saying that three times fast!

Oh, and BTW, the Bengals forgot to add Bruce Coslet, who I know did (or still does) some scouting in the SE when he wasn't (isn't?) on the golf course.

On a serious note, I don't think having a big staff equates to being a good drafting team. Try telling the Dallas Cowboys, who for a number of years weren't effective at all, and although they've gotten better, they've recently whiffed on a number of high choices on the OL (Rogers, Peterman, Al Johnson, and until last year, Andre Gurode). The Stoolers cut Fred Gibson (3rd-round choice) a few years ago in training camp. It happens.

I think being successful in the draft is more about defining what qualities you're looking for in a player, both on and off the field, getting value, and not panicking on draft day. To me, where the Bengals have slipped isn't on the athleticism stuff at all, or not knowing about the off-field stuff... it's in underestimating it. The value focus has gotten them into trouble when they trade off great athletic ability and less than ideal character, particularly as a guy slips... look at Thurman and Henry, for example -- guys who were rated very high as athletes, but who slipped in the draft because of off-field stuff. Some teams took them off their boards completely, whereas the Bengals were likely ecstatic to get them where they did. Even if ML's definition of character is more about being a good teammate, a hard worker, etc. - how is it being a good teammate if you're not on the field 'cuz you messed up off of it?

I''ve said it before and I'll say it again, I'd much rather have our coaches doing the final leg-work rather than some scout who probably never played football. Our scouts do some leg-work during the season and the coaches pick it up after. THere is plenty of time between February and April for coaches to scout all of the players they want either by all-star games or game film. The coaches know what they are looking for, the scouts only know what they THINK the coaches want.

Shouldnt you add the coaching staff of every team as unofficial scouts then?

The coaches do not have the time required to be a full tim scout and coach.

A few examples of how a better scouting dept could have helped this team, only spent 10 minutes, If I had time the list might be 2 pages long

We drafted --------------------------------- could of had

Khalid Abdullah----------------------------- Robert Mathis
Langston Moore---------------------------- Cato June
Dennis Weathersby------------------------ Terrence McGee
Chris Henry--------------------------------- Frank Gore*
David Pollack ------------------------------ Luis Castillo
Kelley Washington ------------------------- Lance Briggs*

What we have------------------------------- What we could have had

1 #3 WR------------------------------------- A great defense and a great RB

Anyone who thinks the Bengals scouting dept is worth a shit doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about
