Prospect Interest List 2008

Hello All,

Last year a thread was started citing players that the Bengals had reportedly interviewed, focused upon, or evaluated. Ultimately, the list did point to a number of guys who were eventually drafted or signed as UDFA. (Thanks to Scoutforlife591 for the idea)

All of the players mentioned below should have an article cited for reference.
Last year, the Bengals ended up drafting virtually all of the guys they scheduled for their allotment of 60 formal interviews of 15 minutes here at the NFL combine. If their list this year is any indication, a tight end is on the radar. Jermichael Finley of Texas and John Carlson of Notre Dame said they have interviews lined up with Cincinnati.
Groves talks a Hall of Fame game

February 24, 2008 3:07 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando

Record-setting Auburn pass rusher Quentin Groves said he met with nine teams last night, and all nine asked if he would be willing to play outside linebacker.

A defensive end in college, Groves started two games at strong-side linebacker. He measured 6-foot-3 and weighed 259 pounds, ideal size to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. In meeting with the Bengals, Groves said he told them he has the get-off of Dwight Freeney witht the athleticism of Lawrence Taylor. I would say he has the confidence of Muhammad Ali, although his delivery lacked the bravado and showmanship.

"I have to spin my hips in front of all 32 teams" to convince them he can play outside linebacker, Groves said. Groves said he grew up hoping to play basketball, but realized in fifth grade he wouldn't be reaching his target height of 6-foot-9.

Groves said he became a dominant pass rusher at Auburn after getting a taste for sacking the quarterback as a seventh-grader. He recalled the way about 200 fans in attendance reacted when he brought down a quarterback for the first time. He liked the feeling.

"I think it's just a want-to," Groves said of what makes a pass rusher successful. "It's a lot of fun getting to the quarterback."

Then he really must have hated this past season since he hardly sniffed the QB.

Everything is on the first post.

It used to look pretty, then I started color coding everything.

Red we signed.

Blue was available to us at one point.

from http://www.tfydraft.com/news.php?newsID=82

Calais Campbell: Sources told us Campbell chose not to compete on the bench press; strange after his poor performance at the combine. He did do position drills and turned in a 34.5 inch vertical jump. The Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars sent scouts specifically for Campbell as did the Washington Redskins. The Skins, in need of defensive line help, are very interested in Campbell. Coincidentally there recently hired d-line coach, John Palermo, also coached Campbell at Miami

Jalen Parmele: Parmele is still struggling with a hamstring which slowed him at the combine. He improved his vertical jump significantly. In Indianapolis he touched 34 inches but got up to 42 inches today. Cincinnati and Jacksonville have set up private workouts with the running back. (he's from Toledo by the way)

Leslie Majors - CB - Indiana - ( http://www.tfydraft.com/news.php?newsID=87 )

"The prior day Leslie Majors of Indiana timed 4.38 and 4.40 seconds. Majors weighed in at 170 pounds, almost ten more than his playing weight. The Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens have scheduled private workouts for the defensive back."

Jason Jones - DE - Eastern Michigan - ( http://www.tfydraft.com/news.php?newsID=87 )

"Jones did not run and stood on his forty times from the combine yet did improve his vertical jump seven inches, touching the tape at 32 inches. He stood out during the practice session as he was put through both defensive line and linebacker drills. Scouts were impressed with Jones ease' of movement skills and athleticism. The consensus opinion was Jones is a terrific athlete with great upside yet no defined NFL position. Marinelli feels he could use Jones as an inside pass rusher while the Ravens like him as a stand-up linebacker. Other teams feel he is best suited as a left defensive end lining up between tackle and tight end. All feel there is a real possibility Jones could slide into the late part of round two.

The Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills have already set dates to bring Jones in for a workout. "

That says nothing about the Bengals being interested in him, it just says he performed well at the Pro Day.
Twelve players worked out (Purdue) and there were almost as many Bengals coaches there -- Cincinnati sent eight coaches, including Jonathan Hayes (TEs), Jeff Fitzgerald (LBs) and Mike Zimmer (defensive coordinator).
Notable defensive players:
» DL/OLB Cliff Avril (6-2 ¾, 250): Had a 36 ½-inch vertical jump and 4.31 short shuttle. Ran position drills and stuck with his combine numbers for everything else.

» LB Stanford Keglar (6-1 5/8, 235): Ran the 40 in 4.55 and 4.56. Had a 39-inch vertical jump, 4.17 short shuttle, ran position drills and kept his combine numbers for everything else.

Tight end:
» TE Dustin Keller (6-2 3/8, 238): Had a 41-inch vertical jump, 3.94 short shuttle (HOLY SHIT), ran position drills and kept his combine numbers for everything else.
Eleven players (South Florida) worked out for representatives of 20 NFL teams, including secondary coaches from Arizona, Baltimore, Carolina and Cincinnati, on hand to see cornerback Mike Jenkins.
Another first round corner?
There was a full house at Auburn on Monday where the Tigers held their annual pro day workout. Included among the attendees were head coaches Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh and Marvin Lewis of Cincinnati. One of the most-watched players at the Auburn workout was DE Quentin Groves, not so much for his base numbers, but whether he how he did in LB drills.
He's already on the list but I thought I would just throw this in here

I'm a big Cliff Avril fan - he had a good career at Purdue, and blew it out at the Combine. He can play DE or OLB. Purdue's done a great job with LBs/DEs lately, especially the pass-rushing kind - Shawn Phillips, Anthony Spencer, Ray Edwards, Roosevelt Colvin.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Bengals targeting him in round 2. I hope they do. Watching the Combine, Rod Woodson was quoting an NFL coach that was watching him and said he'd be a good player in the NFL, based on his speed and agility. He was doing some DB drills at the Combine. at 250#.

Bengals | Hayes attends Texas A&M's Pro Day

Interesting stuff below. The BYU LBs sure tested out well. Kehl is the higher-rated player. And Cal's got some good athletes at WR and TE, as well as Forsett at RB. Thomas Decoud is a safety, though, not WR. I like Lavelle Hawkins - very good hands, but DeSean Jackson is really explosive (though really small). He's got some off-field issues, though, I've heard. But man, I'd love to see what he could do in the return game.

Kellen Davis has a lot of talent. He's got a few off-field issues, too. I think he was arrested last year. Tremendous athlete.

Fourteen prospects worked out indoors on Field Turf. It was a great workout, well-run and Michigan State head coach Mark Dantoni was very helpful. One player, Grand Valley State's Brandon Carr, worked out again.
