[i]Alright I need to call upon the Music Geeks here

Where is a site where I can download free music from popular bands, or just listen to music while I surf.

Preferably one without a lot of bullshit popups and where I don't have to sign up for anything. I am ignorant about this kind of shit so guide me through it if you can.

do u mean programs to download music or a website with music on it...

i just switched from morpheus to ares (aresgalaxy.org) due to a decline in quality of my downloads on morpheus but ares has done me no wrongs and so far is doing great, other quality programs out there include limewire and WinMX (sp?), and are all availible for free, though i would suggest u take a look at ares first

as for sites where u can just listen to music online... typically radio stations have their own streaming media availible for free on their own sites and i sometimes listen to that but u can also use yahoo and msn to watch and listen to music, music videos, and news (msn), yahoo seems to work a little better for me and has a bigger selection, u can also go to an artists official site and most of the time they have a media player (sometimes as an external option) that u can use while browsing around other sites

hope thats what u were looking for...

::Edit:: just remember if u download a program like these make sure nobody can download from u, that is the illegal part, and launch.com that jaime mentioned is the yahoo service

This isn't an easy solution, but it's by far the best. Don't get music from websites. Get it through the newsgroups.

Here's a site that sort of explains it.

Sounds like what you're wanting it for, it probably isn't worth the initial trouble of downloading a newsreader and learning how to use it, but anyone who wants to download a lot of music should be doing it this way. You can also download programs, porn that would disgust even you, BJ, pretty much anything you want. Newsgroups are just servers that are set up for anyone to upload anything they want, and you can download anything that someone else has uploaded.

All ISP's give you access to newsgroups, but some give you access to more than others. The more important thing, is how long they leave the posts up, or the amount of "retention". Most people who download a lot will pay an additional $10 a month or so to a "news server" that gives you more groups, etcetera than what your ISP provides. I won't try to explain it all. Do google searches to find out more.

If you have a yahoo account, they have an excellent site for videos. You can't download them, but you can watch/listen to them while you're surfing.

A friend of mine uses news groups. You'll need a program to view the postings and things. Google News group readers. If you have broadband you most likely have access to a News server. You'll have to get the information from your service provider. But you can find all kinds of things on the news groups. And they are usually high quality. Anything your heart desires. alt.binaries.sounds.etc. Mp3's, AAC(Mp4's), programs, games, porn, anything thats made of 1's and zeros. MY friend also get's alot of AAC files from his schools local intranet. He uses itunes and program called Our tunes. You can share your Itunes music directory over the intranet, and view all the users files as well. He sees some thing he wants and gets it with OURTUNES.

My friend is well versed in software sharing and gets his 1's and 0's from all kinds of places. But he really likes news groups. :ninja:

Ooops maybe i should read other posts before i go posting something thats already been posted?

What ben said NEWSGROUPS.

I've always hear people talk of newsgroups, sounds nice.. will look into that for sure. Thanks for the info...

Far as being easy, I've used bit torrent. What is bit torrent?

http://www.bittorrent.com/

You download the protocol, there are many but I believe the above is the original? (one I use anyways, and works) Also have tried Azureus (java bittorrent software program).

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

Once you download/install (which is quick and easy) bit torrent you just visit a bit torrent site such as one of the below....

http://www.torrentspy.com/
http://www.torrentreactor.net/
http://trackerwww.prq.to

Find what you are looking for and click on it's link.. usually with music, it's the whole album and not just singles.

Also..You can never be to safe, also i'd recommend using PeerGuardian while downloading any "data" B) via bittorrent, p2p's such as limewire/winmx/etc. It's a little IP blocking program that tries to help against RIAA/etc.

if any of you go to college find out if you have a DC++ hub and if so download DC++ asap. on the UConn netowrk there was literally any album, show, or movie you could possibly imagine, and since everyone is on the same network everything downloaded upwards of 1 mb/sec. now that I'm back home I miss it... :(

Can you download punctuation marks there? Just kidding. I'm searching myself. I used imesh for a while, but I'm looking for a site where i can get some really obscure bands. Imesh isn't bad, but I've been striking out on my searches lately.
