Bengals Report Card: Defense takes a step forward

Andy Dalton hooked with A.J. Green for 117 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Jaguars. (AP Images)

Cincinnati made it three wins in a row with their 27-10 victory in Jacksonville on Sunday. The Bengals took care of business against a team they outmatched both on paper and the field. Most importantly, the defensive disaster of the first two weeks has begun to simmer with steady improvement in wins against the Redskins and Jaguars.
Offense: B
The grading curve became more difficult as the Bengals rose the bar the first few weeks. They were one BenJarvus Green-Ellis fumble at the goal line away from registering three consecutive weeks of 30-plus points for the third time in franchise history. Andy Dalton to A.J. Green continues to become of the fastest rising combos in the NFL. Green still stands second in the NFL in receiving yards with 428 through four games. More than Dalton to Green, Dalton connected with eight different receivers and has thrown touchdowns to six different receivers this season. This would have graded out as another A if not for the shocking reoccurance of fumbling for Green-Ellis. After going 589 touches without coughing it up, he's put the ball on the ground three times in two games, losing two of those.
Defense: B
No, the defense didn't completely pull out of the abyss of the first two weeks, but gradually is taking steps back into what the Bengals imagined prior to the start of the season. For the second straight week, they notched six sacks and rank first in the NFL in sacks per pass play. The defensive line rotation fronted by Geno Atkins, Carlos Dunlap andMichael Johnson have become the identity of this group. Plus, for the first time this season, the Bengals found a way to stop the run. They entered Sunday 31st against the rush, but held Maurice Jones-Drew to 38 yards on 13 carries.
Special Teams: A
Kevin Huber boomed three punts for an average of 47.7 net yards and pinned Jacksonville twice inside its 20. Mike Nugent remains a perfect 7 of 7 on field goals this year. Toss in the genius fake punt call that netted a 48-yard run byCedric Peerman, and it completes another great day for the Bengals special teams group.
Coaching: A
Jay Gruden's offensive gameplan again looked creative and effective, spreading the ball around to all fields. Mike Zimmer found an identity on defense. Marvin Lewis and special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons dialing up the fake punt shook the doldrums out of a team slogging through the first 20 minutes. Reeling off three in a row after the opening week debacle deserves a hat tip, regardless of the caliber of opponents.

BENGALS
What we learned: Give the Bengals’ defense a lot of credit. They were missing four cornerbacks, including starters Leon Hall and Nate Clements, but still came up with their strongest performance of the season, holding host Jacksonville to just 212 yards in a 27-10 win. Once again, the defensive line was outstanding, with Pro Bowl DT Geno Atkins notching a pair of sacks and DT Domata Peko and DE Carlos Dunlap also taking down Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert. For the second week in a row, the Bengals recorded six sacks. The Bengals’ offense also merits a tip of the cap, too. QB Andy Dalton was again sharp, completing 20-of-31 passes for 244 yards and two TDs. WR A.J. Green, meanwhile, continues to play like a surefire Pro Bowler. He hauled in six passes for 117 yards and a score. The special teams also had a strong day, with a second-quarter fake punt leading to Cincinnati’s first score. Overall, this was a total team win for Cincinnati, which has now captured three in a row and sits atop the AFC North with Baltimore at 3-1.
What’s in store next: The Bengals have a potentially tricky game against the visiting Dolphins, who gave the unbeaten Cardinals all they could handle in an OT loss at Arizona on Sunday. While the Dolphins have won only once, they have been quite competitive, and they have enough talent on both sides of the ball to give the Bengals some trouble. Rookie QB Ryan Tannehill threw for 431 yards in Sunday’s loss at Arizona, with WR Brian Hartline hauling in 12 passes for a team-record 253 yards in a sparking performance. What’s more, Dolphins OLB Cameron Wake notched 4½ sacks against the Cardinals. The Bengals can’t afford to overlook Miami.
What the heck? What’s going on with sure-handed RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis? Green-Ellis, who had never fumbled in a regular-season game before losing one in the Week Three win at Washington, fumbled two more times at Jacksonville, including once near the Jaguars’ goal line. Part of Green-Ellis’ appeal is his dependability, so these last two games are a little surprising. Nevertheless, he still has a long track record of stability, so he has earned the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

We're handing out game balls after Week 4 and this is who's getting them:

OFFENSE: A.J. Green, Bengals. The wide receiver caught six passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. The amazing part is that Green didn't make his first catch until there was 1:53 left in the first half. He accounted for 48 percent of the Bengals' receiving yards Sunday. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, who threw for 356 yards and had a hand in two touchdowns (threw for one and ran for another), was also in the running.

DEFENSE: Cary Williams, Ravens. The cornerback has gotten beat repeatedly this season, but he came up big when the Ravens needed him. With Baltimore ahead 16-10 in the final minute of the third quarter, Williams jumped a sideline route, picked off a Brandon Weedenpass and ran 63 yards for the score. In a game decided by seven points (23-16), Williams made the decisive play.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Cedric Peerman, Bengals. He's not a kicker or return specialist. But Peerman made the biggest play on special teams in the division when he took the direct snap on a fake punt and ran 48 yards to pick up the first down. With the Bengals trailing 7-3 in the second quarter, this trick play set up the Bengals' first touchdown as Cincinnati scored 24 of the game's final 27 points. Bengals punter Kevin Huber, who averaged 47.7 yards and pinned two of three punts inside the 20-yard line, was also considered.

Team of the Week, Week 4

Defensive Tackle: Geno Atkins, CIN (+9.7) and Brandon Mebane, SEA (+5.3)
You won’t find many more dominant defensive tackle performances that the one Atkins produced. The two sacks, one hit and six hurries tells it all. While he did most of his work in the passing game, Mebane dominated when St Louis tried to run. It was another strong performance from a player who is back to his best and then some this year.

Cornerbacks: Terence Newman, CIN (+4.2) and Cary Williams, BLT (+3.4)
You’re probably more accustomed to these two being contenders for our ‘Had a Bay Day’ team, but things can change. Williams capped off a good day in coverage with what would turn out to be the game-winning pick-six, while Newman allowed just 2-of-6 balls thrown into his coverage to end up complete, breaking up two of the others.
