I think you need to reseed the final four.

Also clarifying question is it the 1981 or 1982 Bengals?    1982 Bengals weren't 12-4 or conference champs.

#2 should play #13

#3 should play #8

It's the '82 Bengals.  My eyes drifted off one line while I was denoting who the Semifinalists are.  The matchups are:

SEMIFINAL#1:
(#13) 1972 Bengals (Paul Brown/Ken Anderson, 8-6)
at (#8) 2005 Bengals (Marvin Lewis/Carson Palmer, 11-5, Division Champs)

SEMIFINAL#2:
(#3) 1988 Bengals (Sam Wyche/Boomer Esiason, 12-4, Conference Champs)
at (#2) 1982 Bengals (Forrest Gregg/Ken Anderson, 7-2)

I appreciate the re-seeding comment, but I opted to do it this way as a straight bracket.

FIRST QUARTER

Following a holding penalty on the opening kickoff return that pushed them back to their own 17, the '72 Bengals began the game with a time-consuming 15-play drive that ended with a Kenny Anderson 2 yarder to Speedy Thomas to put the pumpkin-heads up 7-0 with only 6:23 left in the quarter.  The teams traded punts, setting up the '05 Bengals on their own 14 with 3:07 to go.  Carson Palmer goes 3-for-4, hitting Perry (14), Henry (30) and Johnson (11) to move the Stripes down to the 27 yard line as time expires.

SECOND QUARTER

Starting with at the 27, Palmer hits Houshmandanzadeh, followed by pair of Rudi Johnson power rushes to even the score at 7.  The '72 Bengals go 3-and-out, while the '05 Bengals squander excellent field position, starting at their own 42, to gather only one first down before a coffin-corner punt pins Anderson's bunch on their own 4.  They bolt out with a 20-yard Essex Johnson draw play, but Doug Dressler fumbles the ball away on the next play to set Palmer up in the Red Zone.  It only takes two plays before Palmer finds Chad Johnson on a screen pass, who then scampers 15 yards to paydirt and a 14-7 lead.

Down 7 and not having managed more than a single first down since the opening drive, Anderson's team takes over at their own 32 with a little under 6:00 left in the half and begin to move the ball.  Once again, however, they lose the ball immediately after a big Essex Johnson gain - Johnson motored the ball down to the 34 just before Anderson's pass is picked off my Kevin "The Matrix" Kaesviharn, who eludes tacklers and damn near scores, finally being caught at the 5.  Palmer hits Matt Schobel down the middle, and just like that it's 21-7.

Anderson finds his groove in the 2-minute drill, moving the '72 squad methodically down the field in 10-yard chunks, getting all the way down to the 6 yard line.  But with no timeouts remaining, Coach Brown opts for the Mulhmann Field Goal to make it a 21-10 game going into the half.

THIRD QUARTER

The '05 Bengals benefitted from another excellent kick return, starting the half on their own 40.  Except for one long 28-yard pass to Chad Johnson, this drive belonged to Rudi, who pounded the ball straight down the '72 Bengals throats.  A Palmer third-down sack stalled the drive, but Shayne Graham's 38 yarder made the score 24-10.

The defenses took over for the rest of the quarter.  The '72 Bengals nearly committed their third turnover when Derssler was stripped on his own 34 yard line, but luckily he recovered his own fumble just in time to punt the ball away.  The '05 Bengals went three-and-out, and after a decent 15 yards pass from Anderson to Trumpy to move the ball past mid-field, Deltha O'Neal collected the second Anderson interception of the game.  However, the Stripes couldn't do anything with the ball and punted it back to the Pumpkin-heads, who managed a first-down pass to Chip Myers to their own 44 as the Third Quarter expired.

FOURTH QUARTER

This just wasn't Ken Anderson's day.  Starting the 4th quarter near midfield, he had a pass batted down and then went deep to Kevin Kaesviharn.... who unfortunately was playing for the defensive team today.  Anderson's third INT, and the '72 Bengals' fourth turnover, put them in a pickle - but after a huge 48 yard run by Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry put the nail in the coffin scoring from the six to put the Stripes up 31-10.

Anderson moved the Pumpkinheads to midfield before being forced to punt, and after moving the ball out from the shadow of their own endzone, Palmer did his best Anderson impersonation by throwing an INT of his own to Tommy Cassanova, who returned the ball all the way down to the 22.  A Bob Trumpy TD reception made the score 31-17 with 6:00 to play.

Unable to stop the run, the '72 side watched ad Rudi Johnson and Chris Perry methodically matriculated the ball down the field, buring clock (and '72 timeouts) in the process.  They left only 2:12 on the clock when they punted an pinned the oldsters back to their own 7.  The game effectively ended when Essex Johnson's draw on 4th-and-3 was snuffed out at the line of scrimmage.  Palmer took a knee from the 3 as the game ended.

FIRST QUARTER

The '88 Bengals won the coin toss, but Ickey Woods was stuffed on the first play from scrimmage for a 5 yard loss, resulting in an early three-and-out.  After a three-and-out by the '82 Bengals and poor punt coverage, Esiason set up shop on his second drive from his own 40 yard line.  Brooks and Woods alternated runs of 2, 13 and 11 yards, while Esiason found Eddie Brown for 20 yards of his own, setting up a first down from the 14.  After two rushes got stuffed at the line, Esiason's play-action pass to Rodney Holman put Wyche's crew up 7-0 mid-way through the quarter.

The '82 Bengals responded immediately, with gains of 19 (Pete Johnson rush), 11 (Anderson to Isaac Curtis) and 12 (Johnson rush) moving the ball into scoring range.  Anderson's 3rd down pass to a young Collinsworth in the endzone was just off of his fingertips, forcing Forrest Gregg's side to settle for a 43 yard Jim Breech FG.

Crossing the field to huddle-up with the '88 Bengals, Collinsworth immediately collected an Esiason pass and scampered out to their own 41 yards line.  Eddie Brown, challenged by the old-timer, hauled in his own 23 yarder, and Ickey Woods pounded the ball ahead setting up a 2nd and 5 from the 34 as the first quarter ran out.

SECOND QUARTER

Esiason completed a pair of passes setting up a first and goal, and after Ickey rushed for 6 yards off right tackle, James Brooks put the finishing touches on the drive by pounding it home up the middle to open a 14-3 lead.

It was deja vu all over again, as Anderson could not move the '82 Bengals, who punted the ball away after a four-and-out.  Brooks and Woods clobbered the defenses, rushing for 14, 6, and 14 yards on consecutive plays to move the ball from the 20 all the way across midfield.  Esiason couldn't find an open receiver and had to scrample for a couple of yards, but then found Eddie Brown (7) and Tim McGee (12) for big gains, before an Ickey Woods draw (13) made it first and goal.  Esiason pulled off a beautiful play-action pass, hitting Eric Martin in the end zone to make it 21-3.

Anderson was effective, moving the '82 team across midfield after hitting Collinsworth for a 21 yards, but on the first play after the 2:00 warning Pete Johnson lost the handle as Esiason was set up on his oen 39 with 1:55 to play.  After a quick 11 yarder to James Brooks, Esiason couldn't move the team andy further and ended up punting the ball back to the '82 team having only burned through 23 seconds.  Anderson managed to use up 34 seconds before punting it back to Esiason, who took over near midfield.  With 0:46 on the clock and one timeout, Esiason was only able to move the ball down to the 33... but that was close enough as Jim Breech eeked the ball over the crossbar, hitting a 50-yarder to make it 24-3 at the half.

THIRD QUARTER

Down three scores at halftime, Ken Anderson enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee while listening to the Electric Light Orchestra in the locker room.  It must've worked, because he went 3-for-3 for 77 yards on a quick 1:39 drive to open the 2nd half, connecting with Isaac Curtis for 67 yards and a TD to close the gap to 24-10.

Taking over at his own 29, Boomer Esiason (who reportedly ate a huge halftime lunch and came out of the locker room slightly sleepy) opted to do nothing but hand the ball off.  The plays were Woods (+12, 1st Down), Woods (+3), Stanley Wilson (+7, 1st Down), Brooks (2),  Brooks (2), Wilson (4), Punt.  Anderson's second drive of the half would begin on his own 5, and after missing a pass to Stever Krieder, the '82 squad played it safe and collected enough yards to safely punt the ball back.

Esiason began the next drive with excellent field position (starting down at the 36), but except for a pair of catches by Rodney Holman for 30 total yards, the '88 Bengals had no firepower on this drive, and they settled for a Breech 20-yarder to go up 27-10.

Anderson moved the '82 Bengals across midfield before stalling, and punted the ball back to Esiason & Co just as the quarter ended.

FOURTH QUARTER

Starting the quarter on their own 16 and up 17 points, Esiason, WIlson, and Woods teamed-up to chew through yards and time.  After back-to-back passes to Eddie Brown moved the ball across midfield to the 45, Wyche's men changed tactics and began to run for short yardage while completing the random short pass, in a ploy clearly designed to milk the clock.  Wilson gained 5 on the ground, Esiason hit a grizzled Collinsworth for 5 more and a first down, Ickey pounded for 7, Collinsworth butter-fingered the ball for an incompletion, and Esiason pulled another play-action (this time with James Brooks) to hit a wide open Eddie Brown in the seam.  Brown rambled for 17 before being pulled down in the red zone.  Ickey caught a 2nd down screen pass for 10 yards and a first and goal at the 3, setting up what everyone knew would be the first Ickey Shuffle of the game. Well, Ross Browner knew it too, and when Esiason tried to flip another screen pass to Ickey, Browner jumped all over it, snuffing out the drive.

Alas, Ken Anderson was starting another drive on his own 5.  He managed to move the team out for a first down across the 20, but a Leon White sack made it 3rd and 13 on their own 18 with 8 minutes left.  Knowing that they needed three scores, Forrest Gregg rolled the dice, keeping the offense on the field after Anderson's pass to David Verser fell incomplete.  Facing 4th down on their own 18, Anderson dropped back and spotted a wide-open Steve Kreider crossing in front of the secondary.  The halftime coffee must've kicked in at this point, as Anderson overthrew Kreider, turning the ball over on downs. A Breech FG with 5:10 to play made it 30-10, and seemingly put the game away.

But nobody told Ken Anderson.

After a picture-perfect draw play that caught the defense napping resulted in a 43 yard gain by Pete Johnson, Anderson hit Collinsworth (35) and Ross (30) for an 82 yard, 3 play TD drive that consumed fifty-six seconds, and cut the lead to 30-17.

Needing a stop, Gregg implored his defense to come up with a way to get the ball back.  They nearly did, having forced Wyche's team to deal with a 2nd and 16 from their own 21.  Gregg called for an outside Safety Blitz, Esiason smelled it coming and audibled to a draw play.. and following a textbook pair of blocks by Munoz and Montoya, Ickey Woods tore through the defense, rambling for 68 yards all the way down to the 11 yard line with al ittle more than 3:00 left.  After back-to-back-to-back runs, Jim Breech kicked his 4th FG of the game to put the AFC Champs up 33-17 at the two minute warning.

The '82 Bengals would need a score, a 2 point conversion, a successful onside kick recovery, another score, and another 2 point conversion... with 1:52 on the clock and only a pair of time outs.  The kickoff was returned to the 31, and Charles Alexander ripped off a 37 yard gain down to the 32.  Gregg burned his second timeout at 1:37 as the team rushed downfield to set up.  Pete Johnson was pulled down behind the line for a 3 yard loss, but he rebounded with a 12 yard gain, going out of bounds at the 23 to stop the clock with 1:30.  Johnson picked up a first down, and after Isaac Curtis and Dan Ross get the ball down to the six, Charles Alexander's catch and run around the right end cut the score to 33-23, but the 2-point conversion from Anderson to Ross fell incomplete.

Down 10 with under a minute to play and still needing two scores, the writing was on the wall.  The onside kick attempt failed, and Boomer kneeled down three times to ice the game.

Two first-half touchdowns from Charles Alexander set the tone as Forrest Gregg's '82 Bengals defeated Paul Brown's '72 Bengals going away.   Gregg's side dominated the statistics, winning in rushing yards (292-71), yards per rush (7.7 - 3.1), Total Yards (474-214), First Downs (27-12), and Time of Posession (37:18 - 22:42).  Pete Johnson's 141 yards on the ground was more than the entire '72 Bengals collected.  So was Charles Alexander's 100.

...well, the game will be at Riverfront, so I imagine it'll be rooting for Wyche's squad.

Also, they'll be playing under 1988 rules, so the fans will be loaded down with airhorns and vuvuzuelas and drums.  Bird's Band will be set up in the NW corner of the field.  There may even be a live tiger cub in a cage along the sideline (gotta check on that one).

In addition, since it's 1988, the game will be covered by NBC.  Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen will be providing the play-by-play and commentary, while Dick Costas, Gayle Gardner and Don Shula will be doing the NBC NFL Live broadcast from the stadium itself.
