Van Halen to tour with David Lee Roth

Take it for what it's worth. You know, the original line up of Van Halen has got to be my all time favorite band but this is just going to be pitiful. Especially without Michael Anthony.

David Lee Roth Plans to Join Eddie and Alex for Major Summer Tour
January 24th, 2007

The reunion that Van Halen fans have been awaiting for twenty-two years began in December, when David Lee Roth walked into Eddie Van Halen's Hollywood home studio. There he rejoined the band for a rehearsal, singing fourteen Van Halen classics. "They totally got along on a personal level," a source close to the reunion says. "And it sounded great." At press time, Roth and the band were negotiating a deal for a major summer tour, which would be Van Halen's first Roth-fronted tour since 1984. Along with a possible Police reunion, it would likely be among the year's biggest box-office draws.

"Everything is up in the air," Eddie Van Halen tells Rolling Stone. "We don't want to say anything prematurely." He suggested that the band is waiting on Roth: "People know where we are and that we're making music. Whoever wants to come up can join us -- they're welcome." But the famously contentious group may already be having communication problems. The source replies, "Dave is ready. He's been ready."

Meanwhile, Van Halen will be inducted on March 12th into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame -- and it could prove to be an awkward night. Both Roth and his successor, Sammy Hagar, will be inducted, as will founding bassist Michael Anthony, who was recently replaced by Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's fifteen-year-old son. "It's a privilege and an honor," Eddie says. "And outside of that, we don't know what the hell is going on. . . . Hey, Sammy might not show up on time -- because he can't drive fifty-five. Sorry, bad joke."

For his part, Hagar -- who split with the band in 1996 and clashed with Eddie on a 2004 reunion tour -- says he will be there. "Everyone wants to see a good train wreck, but I'd rather see a beautiful flight," he says. "I'd have no problem sharing a stage with David."

The last decade has been tumultuous for Eddie Van Halen and the band. After Hagar's exit, a brief reunion with Roth flamed out, and they ended up releasing 1998's Van Halen III with a third singer, Gary Cherone, formerly of Extreme. The album flopped, as did an accompanying tour. In 2002, Eddie got divorced, and he was later diagnosed with tongue cancer. He told Howard Stern in 2006 that he beat cancer "in a way that's not exactly legal in this country." In the fall, Eddie released two solo songs for the soundtrack of a porn movie called Sacred Sin.

Eddie, Wolfgang and drummer Alex Van Halen have been regularly rehearsing without Roth, and they're working up songs for a new album. Eddie says that Michael Anthony is no longer in the group because of his decision to tour with Hagar as the Other Half. "Anthony and Hagar started their own band," says Eddie. "You can't be in two bands."

The Van Halen brothers say they've been inspired by Wolfgang's youth and energy -- and that he's changed the sound of the band. "Wait until you hear this kid play," says Eddie. "I pick him up from school every day and we jam. We've got a shredding bass player now that's laying down the law for Alex, so I get to weave in and out." Alex says the situation reminds him of the days when he and Eddie would jam with their dad, a jazz musician, when they were kids. "Our father would look at us and say, 'As long as you guys can hold your own, there is no age difference,' " says Alex.

Eddie says that the band is determined to tour this summer, whether Roth is on board or not. "There's not just one person on this planet that can sing," he says. "We're not waiting on nothing."

Adds Alex, "Whoever the singer is, they'll be surrounded by Van Halens."

Yeah, I'm really not sure about this at all. I did see some video of Ed (I think at NAMM) and his playing didn't sound too bad. He did sound a little drunk or something and for the first time in awhile he didn't totally look like hell. I'm bummed because it doesn't sound like Mike is ever going to be a part of the band again. But who knows...this is Van Halen. Go Eddie! Dave better be wearing a cup if he is back...I don't think it'll last very long.

I believe "1984" was one of the best albums of all-time. Van Halen was never the same after
Roth left. Hagar and that other guy (can't recall his name) sucked monkey balls.

Personally, I liked Hagar, and his stint with VH. But not nearly as much as I enjoyed the albums with Dave. Those are classics.

sneaky, i agree with 1984, it was a great one. if you haven't heard stuff off of Women and Children First, or Fair Warning, give em a listen. or Van Halen II, which also is filled with great stuff.

It depends VH with Sammy and VH with Hagar are two pretty different bands.

Sammy's VH were about showmanship and excess and being rock stars. Some liked that.

Hagar's VH was about musicanship, I mean could anybody really picture Sammy trying to sing 'Right Now'? (My personal favorite)

And I agree with everyone that Gary "Extreame" Sharone sucked

fixed ;)

and i kinda disagree here. the music when Dave was out front was much more bluesy, and Eddie played guitar, instead of just experimenting with shit so much. don't get me wrong, i liked everything they've ever done (save a track or two on Diver Down and the whole VHIII debacle), but the old stuff, musically was much more appealing to me.

and Dave and Michael could sing anything. hearing them do right now can't be anyworse than hearing sammy trying to do Unchained.

You know, Van Halen is one of my favorite bands of all time. I've seen them live seven times and have a bootleg collection that would kcik your ass. Sammy or Dave doesn't matter to me. They were both cool for different reasons. However, I paid $400 to see them on their last tour, 5th row seats, VIP backstage package and a private soundcheck during which you could meet the band and get autographs. It was supposed to be the last hurrah and the greatest experience ever. So I thought.

Unfortunately, (long story short) the band's "plane was delayed" out of Boston (read: band was too drunk to stand), and we got screwed out of the soundcheck, which is the main reason why I and everyone else paid big bucks for that ticket package.

Shortly after that, we started hearing about how the band was fighting again and they broke up... again.

To tell the truth, I'm really not too keen on shelling out another large sum of money to see them this time around, when you know it's because someone in the band is broke and needs the money, or the record label is demanding it, or because they want to cash in on the whole Hall of Fame induction, or whatever. Giving that much money to that ungrateful bunch of prima donnas is not something I'm looking forward to. Guys, I love the tunes, but goddammit, they have got to be the biggest bunch of assholes in all of rock and roll.

So, naturally, I'll see you guys at the show. Somewhere in the first five rows as usual. :ninja:

My wife showed me a picture of Eddie Van Halen (Looked more like Edith Van Halen) online the other day.
I swear it looked like an old lady. Van Halen after David Lee Roth was pretty much a disaster IMO.
And for them to say that Michael Anthony cant be in 2 bands at the same time is is ridiculous.

Best rock-n-roll scream EVER....David Lee Roth, from the song "On Fire" from Van Halen 1.
I am a huge fan of the older stuff, never could really get into the Hagar songs, although one of my favorite VH moments occurs during the video for "Right Now", where the words say "Right now, Michael Anthony is considering a SOLO project...."
And the reason why that was funny is because Anthony is a marginal bass player at BEST. His consummate value to the band was his ability to sing high harmony parts that nobody else could, which added a nice dimension to their LA band sound.

The scream occurs right after the bridge where they are singing "Fire....fire" right before Eddie's solo, which precedes the last verse. It's a great scream, isn't it?

I don't think Dave can sing anymore though (witness "Me Wise Magic" from that "Best Of" compilation VH put out awhile ago), and is probably the member of the band most strapped for cash, particularly given his failed recent solo band project and his weak attempt to be Howard Stern's replacement.
And didn't Dave get busted trying to buy a dimebag of weed in NYC some years ago? A DIMEBAG? 10 bucks worth of pot being purchased on the street by a former ROCK GOD?
Yeesh.

If you notice in that song, most of the verses are spoken in low monotone, and the chorus contains his attempts to sing.
No harm no foul, the guy's old as dirt for a rocker and his cocaine consumption surely had something to do with his vocal cords being eroded.
Honestly, I actually liked his solo stuff with Steve Vai better than ANYTHING Van Halen did with Sammy. Especially Eat 'Em And Smile.

if the new VH album comes out and he sounds like a bad american idol audition, that will save me a lot of $$ at least.
