'Chappelle's Show' uproar

Shooting halted, no reasons given

By MARISA GUTHRIE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Work on Dave Chappelle's Comedy Central show has ended abruptly.

In a highly unusual and perplexing move, Comedy Central yesterday stopped production on its sketch comedy hit "Chappelle's Show."
The terse announcement came just three weeks before the third season of the popular series was to return to the air, ending a year-long stretch of reruns.

"Comedy Central has suspended production on the third season of 'Chappelle's Show' until further notice," officials said in a written statement released late yesterday. "All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future. The third season will not premiere on May 31 as originally scheduled."

A Comedy Central spokesman would not comment beyond the statement.

Chappelle's publicist was equally tight- lipped about the stunning announcement.

Fans have already endured a lengthy absence by the acerbic, politically incorrect comedian. The last original episode of the Chappelle's no-holds-barred sketch show aired May 4, 2004.

"Chappelle's Show" has been a bright spot on the Comedy Central schedule. Last year, the network renewed the show for two seasons, an unusual move in the cable world. The lucrative deal, worth a reported $50 million - a figure downplayed by Comedy Central insiders, called for 10 episodes each for seasons three and four.

That package, according to Comedy Central sources, includes large bonuses for Chappelle if his ratings rise, as well as a percentage of future DVD sales. The show averaged about 3 million viewers an episode in its first two seasons.

If Chappelle does go back to work, he stands to make plenty from those DVD sales. The first season of "Chappelle's Show" sold 2 million copies, raking in $44 million in retail sales and making the boxed set the best selling comedy title in DVD history.

Production on the third season had been underway since the beginning of the year. Tapings in front of live audiences were scheduled for today and Saturday. But no episodes are ready for air.

Separately, earlier this week, Comedy Central announced a slew of new late night programs for the coming season, including programs hosted by Adam Carolla, D.L. Hughley and "The Daily Shows'" Stephen Colbert.

Comedian Chappelle stops production of show with no explanations
By Jesse McKinley and Lola Ogunnaike

New York Times

No one is certain what exactly is going through the mind of the comedian Dave Chappelle, whose acclaimed sketch comedy show, Chappelle's Show, suddenly suspended production last week.

His representatives were giving little additional information about what happened, other than to deny rumors that drug use, a frequent topic of Chappelle's stand-up comedy routines, was a factor in the decision. And officials at Comedy Central, the cable channel that carries the show, said they had no additional information as to when or if new episodes might be seen.

But what is certain is that Chappelle, 31, had taken on an enormous amount of responsibility last August when he signed a two-year contract with Comedy Central worth an estimated $35 million to $50 million, perhaps the richest deal ever for a half-hour cable comedy show.

"Obviously, I'm sure there's a lot of pressure, with the expectation of the fans, and the network and the expectation of the press," said Matt Labov, Chappelle's publicist.

But those expectations and tensions were no doubt also heightened by the unusual amount of hands-on involvement Chappelle has in the show that bears his name. In addition to his roles as the producer and star — playing everyone from a blind, black racist to Rick James, the famously decadent (and now deceased) funk star — Chappelle was also writing almost every line of this season's 10 scheduled shows himself, along with writing partner Neal Brennan.

"Dave and Neal are essentially the whole writing staff," said Labov. "They'd shoot for a week and then Dave and Neal would take a week off to write."

Indeed, some of the internal pressures may have come from the unique style of production employed by Chappelle's Show, in which dozens of comedy sketches, musical numbers, and other bits were shot in no particular order, only to be assembled later in the editing room. "They don't necessarily have a shooting script for a set episode," said Labov. And while that method worked famously in two previous seasons, earning rave reviews and high Nielsen ratings, the show currently has no completed episodes despite having shot material sporadically since early February.

Chappelle may have increased his already heavy workload by booking several casino gigs this spring, playing large theaters at the Borgata in Atlantic City and Foxwoods in eastern Connecticut. Labov categorically denied speculation that any of his client's problems with delivering the show on time—the third season's premiere had already been delayed twice — had to do with drug abuse. "He's not in rehab. He does not have a cocaine addiction," Labov said.

Last season the show was one of Comedy Central's biggest draws, averaging more than 3 million viewers, twice as many as Comedy Central's Daily Show with Jon Stewart, another of the network's stars.

Ratings like that, along with impressive DVD sales, helped to establish Chappelle as a major star worthy of a multimillion-dollar deal after years of toil as a stand-up comedian and as an actor in movies like Half-Baked.

The latest on Chapelle Show
NEW YORK - Dave Chappelle is under pressure, according to a Newsweek report. The star of Comedy Central's popular "Chappelle's Show," is exhausted due to tension, partying and creative differences with Comedy Central, causing last week's halt in the show's production, the report said.

"I saw him start trippin' when the buzz started to get real loud," one unidentified celebrity friend told Newsweek. "I think he was in shock after the first season, and then (during) the second, it hit him that he was the man. That freaked him. And then came the pressure of living up to expectations for the third season. He's never been there — where something's so good and you got to come even stronger the next time. It was too much."

Neither Comedy Central publicist Tony Fox nor Chappelle's spokesman, Matt Labov, has discussed what caused the halt in production or how long it will last. The third season was to premiere May 31.

Another source pointed to the 31-year-old actor-comedian's partying, although Labov has denied that his client has a drug problem.
"Everyone knows Dave likes to have fun," a music industry source said. "I wouldn't say it's out of control ... but at some point that has to affect you if you've got a regular gig."

Newsweek writer Devin Gordon visited the set in November 2004, just a few weeks into shooting on the third season. Gordon didn't notice any out of the ordinary behavior.
The Newsweek report claims Chappelle wants to delve into more controversial racial issues, unsettling "Comedy Central" executives; Comedy Central and an employee in Chappelle's camp said last week the delay "is not a network issue."

"Dave is not compromising what he wants to do," another source said. "He's waited a long time for this chance, and he's not trying to do anything that isn't 100 percent his vision."
Now that's crazy, Dave went to get some back-up. Seriously I hope he'll be ok, he's hilarious. Btw, I saw the bootleg dvd guy today with a copy of season 2, but I couldn't do that Dave, plus the quality was probably ass anyway. I've been a fan of Dave's for awhile and it's cool to see him finally get the recognition he deserves, it's sad to him crack up like this at peak of his fame, the pressure must be tough.
