College football fans can get their New Year's Day bowl fest kick-started with an historic game - the Ticketcity Bowl - which we can only assume is sponsored by an internet travel agency. A more appropriate name for this one might be the 'Mid-to-late round bowl' as a lot of seniors dot the rosters of both Northwesten and Texas Tech, but none figures to go much higher than the 5th round at the earlier. Indeed, the top-rated prospect in this game might be Northwestern junior DE Vince Browne (#94, 6-5, 265) who had 7 sacks and 8 other tackles for loss this season, however, he's not likely to be entering the 2011 draft. Among the seniors on the field, Texas Tech DT Colby Whitlock (#93, 6-3, 295) figures to get some mid-round looks, while Red Raiders' QB Taylor Potts (#12, 6-5, 225), RB Baron Batch (#25, 5-9, 210), WRs Lyle Leong (#19, 6-0, 175) and Detron Lewis (#17, 6-0, 210), and LBs Brian Duncan (#57, 6-1, 250) and Bront Bird (#20, 6-2, 250) are later round or free agent candidates. Of the Red Raiders' seniors, Duncan may be the most versatile as he has played DE, MLB and as a pass-rush OLB. Meanwile, Northwestern players with late-round or free agent grades include DT Corbin Bryant (#98, 6-3, 300), LBs Quentin Davie (#41, 6-3, 230) and Nae Williams (#44, 6-0, 235), CB Justan Vaughn (#28, 5-11, 190), WR Sidney Stewart (#5, 6-0, 185) and OG Keegan Grant (#63, 6-, 305).

There have been years in which Florida and Penn State on New Year's Day would have all the makings of a classic, but this year, they are both rebuilding programs struggling to find an identity. Indeed, the big question in Tampa later today will be whether this will be legendary Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's last game as the 84-year-old veteran is well getting old. Meanwhile, Florida does have a new coach as former Texas offensive co-ordinator Will Muschamp is taking over for Urban Meyer who stepped down for health reasons. One doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how Florida lost an uncharacteristic 5 games this season as too many players didn’t play well. There were scouts who thought that junior QB John Brantley (#12, 6-3, 220), for example, would actually be a better pro prospect than former Gators’ Tim Tebow, the 25th pick at the 2010 draft whom he replaced this fall. However, Brantley never found a rhythm this fall and still hasn‘t ruled out transferring after the bowls. The Gators also had some problems early in the season when C Mike Pouncey (#55, 6-3, 320), who moved over from OG to replace twin brother Maurkice, the 18th player selected at the 2010 draft at center, couldn‘t get the shot gun snap back to Brantley. That did get corrected, but it doesn‘t appear that Mike is going to be drafted quite as high as brother Maurkice and could in fact have to wait well into the second day to hear his name called. The Gators also have had some other issues as big-play junior WR Chris Rainey (#3, 5-9, 175) one of the fastest players in all of college football, was suspended earlier in the season for some off-field legal problems, while junior RB Jeff Demps (#2, 5-8, 175), another speedster, has been slowed by a foot problem. At the same time, junior FS Will Hill (#10, 6-1, 205) was in and out of the coaches’ doghouse much of the year because of inconsistent effort. And the Gators will be without star junior CB Janoris Jenkins as well as DTs Lawrence Marsh and Terrion Sanders against Penn State because of injuries. Florida, though, will have OGs Carl Johnson (#57, 6-5, 360) and junior James Wilson (#66, 6-3, 322) and OT Marcus Gilbert (#76, 6-5, 325), a trio of solid mid-round prospects, joining Pouncey upfront, while SS Ahmad Black (#35, 5-9, 190) should also get some mid-round interest this spring. At the same time, RB Emmanuel Moody (#21, 21, 5-10, 215), WR Carl Moore (#9, 6-2, 222), and LB A.J. Jones (#16, 6-1, 230) are later round or free agent candidates.

It has also been something of a rebuilding year at Penn State. Still, the Nittany Lions’ roster features at least a couple of prospects among the top senior prospects at their respective positions in C/G Stefen Wisniewski (#61, 6-2, 305), an early second-day prospect for the 2011 draft, and RB Evan Royster (#22, 6-0, 215), who has likely seen his stock drop into the mid-round range. Meanwhile active, but undersized NT Ollie Ogbu (#85, 6-1, 285), WR Graham Zug (#5, 6-1, 185), OLB Bani Gbadyu (#15, 6-1, 230), and OT Lou Elides (#77, 6-4, 310) are later round or free agent type prospects.

No question, that other than the designated BCS games, the Alabama-Michigan State match-up in the Capital One Bowl is the best bowl game on the schedule. The fact that Alabama head coach Nick Saban once coached Michigan State adds a little extra spice to the deal. More to the point, a pretty good case can be made that once beaten Michigan State should be in one of the BCS games, while defending national champion Alabama is a much better team than its 9-3 record. Indeed, even though Alabama hit a few speed bumps this past seasons, the Tide is still loaded and could have a major impact at the upcoming draft. Junior DE Marcel Dareus (#57, 6-3, 305), for example, is a potential top 5-10 pick as is star junior WR Julio Jones (#8,6-3, 215). Meanwhile, junior RB Mark Ingram (#22, 5-9, 215), last year's Heisman Trophy winner, struggled with a knee injury much of the season, but still is the top rated back in the country with mid-opening round potential. In fact, Ingram combines with sophomore RB Trent Richardson (#3, 5-11, 220), who may ultimately be an even better pro prospect, to give the Tide arguably the most dynamic 1-2 RB combination in the country. Sophomore MLB Donta Hightower could also figure in the first day mix if he opts to enter the upcoming draft, although he needs to show a little better range and instincts to get a first-round grade, while SS Mark Barron (#4, 6-1, 210), yet another Alabama junior, has second-day potential, although he won’t play because of an injury. At the same time, veteran QB Greg McElroy (#12, 6-2, 225) and senior LT James Carpenter (#77, 6-5, 320) should get some mid- or later round interest this coming April, while WR Darius Hanks (#15, 5-11, 185), TE Preston Dial (#85, 6-3, 240), and DE Luther Davis (#96, 6-2, 280) are more free agent types.

Michigan State MLB Greg Jones (#53, 6-1, 235) won‘t go quite as high as some of Alabama’s stars, in large part because the position just isn’t as valued on draft day, however, like Jones should still be among the first 2-3 MLB’s off the board this spring. Meanwhile, other Michigan State players to watch for the 2011 draft include WR Mark Dell (#2, 6-1, 200), TE Charlie Gantt (#83, 6-4, 255), OTs J’Michael Deane (#77, 6-5, 315) and D.J. Young (#59, 6-5, 315), C John Stipek (#66, 6-4, 295), OLB Eric Gordon (#6-0, 230), SS Marcus Hyde (#11, 5-11, 205), and CB Chris Rucker (#29, 6-1, 195), who spent some time in jail earlier in the season, but was re-instated to the roster after being released.

Do not adjust your sets; it is not a misprint, but yes that is Michigan back in a New Year's day bowl game despite winning just 7 games this season which the Wolverines were just 2-5 after starting the campaign 5-0. Michigan, though, does have one of the most dynamic young players in the country in sophomore QB Denard Robinson (#16, 6-0, 195), an electrifying option QB with sub-4.35 speed, who ran for over 1,600 yards this fall, while passing for close to 2,500. Robinson, though, won’t be draft eligible until 2012 and even then likely won’t be that highly rated, at least as a QB. It also didn’t help Michigan’s 2011 draft prospects that CB Troy Woolfolk, arguably the team‘s best senior prospect missed the year with a leg injury. OG Steve Schilling (#52, 6-4, 305), though, is a solid mid-round prospect, while LBs Obi Ezeh (#45, 6-1, 240) and Jonas Mouton (#8, 6-2, 230), and TE Martell Webb (#80, 6-4, 260) are solid later round candidates.

For its part, Mississippi State got a little lost in the SEC West, easily the best divison in college football this fall, but the Bulldogs quietly put together a very solid season in which al 4 losses were to teams ranked in the top 20 at the end of the year. Mississippi State has also quietly put together a very good draft class for 2011. OT Derek Sherrod (#79, 6-6, 305), for example, isone of the top 2-3 LT prospects in this year's draft crop and looks like a lock to be a first round pick, while OLB K.J. Wright (#34, 6-3, 250) and DE Pernell McPhee (#90, 6-4, 285) are solid second-day candidates. Wright in particular, is part of a very active LB corps which also includes underrated MLB Chris White (#45, 6-3, 245), a mid-round prospect who had 105 tackles this past season including 15 for loss. Other Bulldogs to watch include C JC. Brignone (#70, 6-1, 300), FB Patrick Hanrahan (#35, 5-10, 235) and OLB Emmanuel Gatling (#48, 6-0, 220).

If Auburn-Oregon for the national championship is the game of the year in college football, then unbeaten TCU versus Wisconsin, just maybe the hottest team in the country at the end of the year, could very well be game of the year 1A. And while TCU is unbeaten heading into the Rose Bowl, Wisconsin is likely to be the bigger player at the 2011 draft. Big LT Gabe Carimi (#68, 6-6, 325), for example, is one of a half dozen or so OTs with first-round potential this coming spring. Carimi anchors a typical big, physical Wisconsin offensive front that includes OG John Moffitt (#74, 6-4, 325) who is also destined to play on Sundays. Indeed, it wouldn’t seem like Wisconsin without a steady diet of junior RB John Clay (#32, 6-0, 250) pounding between the tackles, although Clay has had to share carries with freshman James White (#20, 5-9, 200) and sophomore Montee Ball(#28, 5-10, 235) this fall. Meanwhile, TE Lance Kendricks (#84, 6-3, 240) provides veteran QB Scott Tolzien (#16, 6-2, 215) with a nice target, although he’s still more of an HB prospect rather than a true two-way TE candidate. In the end, though, Wisconsin’s best prospect for the upcoming draft could be junior DE J.J. Watt (#99, 6-5, 285) who had 7 sacks and 14 other tackles for loss this past fall. In fact, the Wisconsin defense is youthful, but has steady seniors in MLB Culmer St. Jean (#5-11, 240), OLB Blake Sorenson (#9, 6-0, 230) and SS Jay Valai (#2, 5-8, 205).

At the same time, TCU isn’t going to have anyone selected in the opening round of the upcoming draft, but does have plenty of very good second-tier prospects. The Horned Frogs' best pro prospect, for example, is massive LT Marcus Cannon (#61, 6-4, 350), a wide-body type who is surprisingly light on his feet. Cannon, who could also figure inside at the next level, currently carries a second-day grade. Cannon anchors the TCU OL long with veteran C Jake Kirkpatrick (#76, 6-3, 305), this year’s Rimington Award winner, although he is more a mid-to-late round candidate. There is a similar story for junior MLB Tank Carder (#37, 6-3, 237), the Mountain West defensive player of the year, FS Tejay Johnson (#3, 6-0, 215), and tweener DE Wayne Daniels (#96, 6-2, 250), who can get after the QB. Meanwhile, QB Andy Dalton (#14, 6-2, 215) hasn‘t gotten much respect from pro scouts, but he is a very accurate, efficient passer. And Dalton has a couple of excellent targets in WRs Jimmy Young (#88, 6-1, 205) and Jeremy Kerley (#85, 5-9, 195). Other TCU players with free agent potential include DT Corey Grant (#57, 6-2, 305), safeties Alex Ibiloye (#9, 6-0, 185) and Colin Jones (#28, 6-0, 210) and CB Jason Teague (#27, 6-1, 195).

What if they held a bowl game and nobody came! That appears to be the story for the Fiesta Bowl which may be one of the worst BCS match-ups ever. Not that there is anything wrong with Big XII champion Oklahoma, however, the only way UConn gets anywhere near a BCS bowl is to win the Conference the Nobody Wanted to Win, otherwise known as the Big East. In fact, the Huskies are the first BCS team ever to have lost to Temple; plus they lost by 3 TDs to Michigan and were shutout by Louisville, but did rally to win their final 5 games of the year to steal the Big East title. Ironically, though, the player pro scouts really want to see in this game just may be UConn junior RB Jordan Todman (#23, 5-9, 195) who isn't all that big, but has speed to burn and ran for over 1,600 yards and 14 scores this season. The Huskies also have at least one second-day type prospect in MLB Lawrence Wilson (#8, 6-1, 230), while fellow LB Scott Lutrus (#32, 6-3, 245), who has battled injuries over the past couple of seasons, and rangy OG Zach Hurd (#78, 6-7, 325) are close.

While Oklahoma ponders how they ended up in the desert with a bunch of Huskies, the Sooners may take some solace from the fact that they made a BCS game despite having three players selected among the first four picks at the 2010 draft. No one from Oklahoma is going to go quite that early this spring, however, the Sooners have at least a couple of late first/early second round type prosects in DE Jeremy Beal (#44, 6-3, 265), a dynamic edge rusher who is getting a lot of scrutiny from 3-4 teams looking for an OLB who can rush the passer, and junior OLB Travis Lewis (#28, 6-2, 235). Same story for junior WR Ryan Broyles (#85, 5-10, 180) who isn't all that big, but is quick and precise and doubles as a scary punt returner, while SS Quinton Carter (#20, 6-0, 195) is one of the better senior safeties in the country. Oklahoma is also hopeful that RB Demarco Murray (#7, 6-0, 215) and DT Adrian Taylor (#86, 6-4, 295) can sneak into the top 100, although injuries have held them back in their OU careers.

One of the guys that I was hoping to see was Mark Barron. I have watched him earlier in the season and he seems like he has what it takes to be a good S at the next level. I havent seen his name pop up in any Mocks yet but I think he might be a 4th round guy to keep an eye on.

I am sold on trying to get Pouncey or Stefen Wisniewski in the 2nd. Both guys looked very solid yesterday.

Pouncey played better than I expected. He's very mobile for his size.

I would be happy with Cannon, Wisniewski or Pouncey in 2.

he'd be a steal in the 2nd round. Can play both guard and tackle spots. He'd be a great replacement for Bobbie and insurance on Andre.

No doubt. He is extremely quick and athletic for 350 pounds. He's a left tackle for TCU. Could realistically play both guard and tackle spots. LT isn't his most ideal position in the NFL but he could do it in a pinch. I just don't think he will last to our pick in round 2 now. Pittsburgh would be foolish to pass on him.

if I'm not mistaken, he's played all 4 spots at some point at TCU. I know he's played LT, RT and RG.
