Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton named as one of NFL’s 10 biggest turkeys

The NFL is a marketing machine, a network of television, online, print and other media platforms that push the league’s message at every turn. It’s a mechanism that churns out stars and makes average Joes household names.

Most of the time, that’s a good thing; the league is promoting the game by highlighting the people who make it click. But it’s not always appropriate. Sometimes, people aren’t ready to be stars and/or household names. Perhaps they don’t have the résumé for it. Maybe they don’t perform well in the limelight.

But once they are there, it’s hard to get them out of the public eye; the toothpaste is already out of the tube. That creates problems, as people who shouldn’t be the face of the NFL are in part serving that role. They’re woefully miscast, but have are stuck on stage.

With that in mind, here are the 10 biggest turkeys in the NFL today:

8. Andy Dalton

Big money should mean coming up big in big games

Put him in a 1:00 game on a Sunday, with only the two local markets tuned in, and Dalton shines. But when the stage is big, when the lights are bright, he turtles under the pressure. This makes Dalton the classic example of a bad modern athlete; he puts up big stats in games that don’t matter much, earning a big payday in the process, but isn’t able to lift his team to the heights that his paycheck would indicate is doable.

Andy just needs to get over that hump. As Peyton Manning early in his career choked in the big time. But now, he has gotten better. Hope Andy can do that.

Or he could make a career out of it and be the next Romo/Rivers/Cutler, but he'd have to play in a bigger market. Then these same hacks would be lining up for the weekly rub-n-tug instead of slagging him in throwaway smear articles during a slow holiday week.

Not like he does, which is strange considering they've been in the league a helluva lot longer and seem unlikely to get over that hump.

I don't know about that.  Listen to any sports talk show and sure, Andy gets shit on for a few minutes every week. Romo and Cutler get shit on 24/7/365.    Cutler deserves it, guy has no heart.  Romo not so much, his teams have never been all that good.

There is not a day that goes by we don't have Cutler drama up here. He is routineley cursed on a daily basis. Even old ladies get in on the act. Believe me.

Nah. Andy gets shitted on almost as an aside. We don't have a big enough fan base for them to talk about him and shit on him like they do Cutler or Romo.
