Perhaps that it has not been implemented, especially during times that were sympathetic to such a regime, is an indication that it is not possible. Communism rests mostly on critique of the current system but seems to think that magic will make the communist system possible--and somehow better. Some things Marx was brilliant on, others less so. I do agree with him in the sense that in order to sustain a high standard of living for one group of society it is necessary to have a group that feeds that machine. The problem with Communism, even theoretically, is that if this is removed, what happens? Also it would only be possible to sustain a Communist model in a world in which it is universal. Just say for the sake of discussion that it is universal. What then? A period of stagnation. Progress would be frozen. Despite what Marx believed (or at least wrote), the state would never wither away. In order to keep the system in existence, a state of some type would have to be kept around. Every system has flaws that will lead to its own destruction. If possible, the best possible system would create a new order that in turn, will lead back to the original order, and so on through time. In that way the best stability could be achieved. Marx's vision is nothing but a mental exercise. It ignores too many factors such as individual will. thesis-antithesis historical model = good.
