Wideouts Mike Wallace (18.5 yards per reception) and Antonio Brown (13.8) are among the best vertical receiving tandems in the NFL. They create a change in preparation for Marvin Lewis, unaccustomed to potent Pittsburgh deep threats. "I used to be able to cheat coverage against them a little bit," he said. "You can’t cheat coverage much anymore"

The Steelers make a habit of shutting down RB Cedric Benson. In six games with Cincinnati against Pittsburgh, Benson topped four yards per carry once and never rushed for more than 76. There is no special secret to their success. "We know they’re going to come in and play smashmouth," Benson said.

5:10 pm, Nov 9, 2011 | Written by kgoheen

As Joe Reedy observed earlier, several Bengals did not practice today. Defensive end Carlos Dunlap (hamstring), cornerback Nate Clements (knee), safety Chris Crocker (knee), tight end Donald Lee (foot) and running back Brian Leonard (knee) all sat out of the team’s workout. This is a regularly scheduled rest day for Crocker and Clements but the other three were injured in last Sunday’s win at Tennessee.

Dunlap leads the team with 20 quarterback pressures (according to coaching stats) and has three sacks in the last two games.

Tight end Jermaine Gresham (hamstring), cornerback Adam Jones (hamstring) and linebacker Rey Maualuga (ankle) all returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday. Maualuga hasn’t played since Oct. 9 at Jacksonville, while Gresham has missed the last two games. Jones was on the PUP list for the first six games while still recovering from neck surgery last year, played in one play at Seattle — he tweaked his right hamstring on a 63-yard punt return — and did not play against the Titans.

“I just want to make sure I come in at the right time and not get any setbacks with my ankle,” said Maualuga. “The coaches will take care of me and limit what I do to any Wednesday and hopefully by Saturday I will be full speed and ready to go.”

Wednesday Update: Rey says he's ready to play; Dunlap on side; Bruce Steels Dalton

By GEOFF HOBSON

Updated: 4:15 p.m.

The Bengals started the clock ticking Wednesday on outside linebacker Keith Rivers’s three-week window on the physically unable to perform list with a wrist injury, but head coach Marvin Lewis indicated at his Wednesday news conference that he’s not ready to return to practice yet. After the three weeks are up, the club either has to put Rivers on the active roster, put him on season-ending injured reserve, or release him.

» Left end Carlos Dunlap, who injured his hamstring on Sunday's sack with seven seconds left, worked on the side Wednesday with rehab therapist Nick Cosgray. Running back Brian Leonard (knee), who says he can play, was also out. Cornerback Nate Clements (knee) and safety Chris Crocker (knee) looked to be taking their weekly constitutionals and weren't out there. Also out was tight end Donald Lee (foot), but earlier in the week he said he could play.

» Middle linebacker Rey Maualuga (ankle) hits the field Wednesday for the first time since suffering a severe sprain in the Oct. 13 practice. He says he’s ready to play but it is up to the coaches. Also back is tight end Jermaine Gresham (hamstring) and cornerback Adam Jones (hamstring). All three were listed as limited, as well as right tackle Andre Smith (toe), wide receiver Andre Caldwell (groin), and outside linebacker Thomas Howard (knee).

» Bengals backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski is 1-2 against Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, so he can give Andy Dalton the good, the bad and the ugly. Gradkowski was about to fall asleep the other night when he bolted up at an ESPN graphic following Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco’s fourth-quarter comeback against Pittsburgh on Sunday night that showed Gradkowski, Flacco and New England's Tom Brady are among a handful of players that have thrown for more than 300 yards and three TDs with no interceptions in Pittsburgh in the last 30 years or so.

When Gradkowski did it in 2009 for the Raiders, Steelers Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu didn’t play. Dalton doesn’t have that luxury. Gradkowski is also one of the 11 rookie quarterbacks that has lost to LeBeau in 12 appearances against him since he came back for his second stint with the Steelers.

“Andy gets the ball out of his hand quickly and that’s what he’ll have to do Sunday,” Gradkowski said.

» The Bengals went inside Paul Brown Stadium to work on the FieldTurf in the rain Wednesday.

OL Andrew Whitworth pointed out that comparisons to the surprising 2009 playoff team don't necessarily apply this year. With the deaths of Chris Henry and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's wife, Vikki, that team was drained mentally, physically and emotionally as it limped from a 6-2 start to 4-5 finish and first-round playoff exit.

This is a huge game for both teams. The Steelers can't afford another loss in the division after losing to the Ravens last week. The Bengals are for real on defense. And we know the Steelers are. This shapes up as a low-scoring game with the team that makes the mistakes being the loser. I think it's the Steelers that make them.

What a great quote. He realizes that you have to be unpredictable to have success against the Steelers. You have to stick with the run game but not only in obvious situations. God it is nice to have a real OC.

When Ava Brockman was 11 months old and sick with a fever, her family couldn't figure out what was wrong. Her pediatrician wanted an X-ray to rule out pneumonia. It revealed something worse: a tumor between her heart and spinal cord. Surgeons at Cincinnati Children's removed the tumor, and Ava is doing just fine. The medical center and the Cincinnati Bengals celebrate her success. She is MVP of the 2011 Bengals vs. Steelers game.

It's very important that the Bengals' coaches and players don't view this as a "must-win" game or set it up as "the" game to make or break the season. If they lose, it could shake the team's confidence or perhaps panic them a bit. Maybe I'm overreaching here, I don't know. Maybe they'd shake it off, either way. But I'd be careful about using terms that imply that things are shaky if they don't win this game.

Speaking of "must-win", that term drives me crazy, anyway. It's WAY overused and misused by the media and fans alike. The ONLY "must-win" games are those that mathematically eliminate the team if they lose.
This is true. "must win" is an overused phrase.

Maualuga hopeful, Jones 'ready to go'

Bengals notebook

Linebacker Rey Maualuga, cornerback Adam Jones and tight end Jermaine Gresham practiced Wednesday for the Bengals in preparation for Sunday’s home game against Pittsburgh.

The Bengals and Baltimore are both 6-2 and tied for first place in the AFC North, while Pittsburgh is one-half game behind at 6-3.

Maualuga hasn’t played since Oct. 9 at Jacksonville because of an ankle sprain, while Gresham (hamstring) has missed the last two games. Jones was on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list for the first six games while still recovering from neck surgery last year, played in one play at Seattle – he tweaked his right hamstring on a 63-yard punt return – and did not play against Tennessee last Sunday.

“I just want to make sure I come in at the right time and not get any setbacks with my ankle,” said Maualuga. “The coaches will take care of me and limit what I do. It’s only Wednesday and hopefully by Saturday I will be full speed and ready to go.”

Jones was limited in practice last Friday but doesn’t anticipate anything holding him back this week.

“I’m ready to go,” said Jones. “There ain’t no question this week. I’m ready to go.”

Defensive end Carlos Dunlap (hamstring), cornerback Nate Clements (knee), safety Chris Crocker (knee), tight end Donald Lee (foot) and running back Brian Leonard (knee) all sat out the team’s workout on Wednesday. This is a regularly scheduled rest day for Crocker and Clements but the other three were injured at Tennessee.

Steelers-Bengals Preview

Updated Nov 9, 2011 3:28 PM ET

For a team picked to finish last and in apparent disarray heading into the season, the Cincinnati Bengals are making many prognosticators look foolish.

Riding their longest winning streak in more than 23 years and tied for the lead in the AFC North, the Bengals begin a stretch of four straight games against division rivals when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

The holdout of Carson Palmer, trade of Chad Ochocinco to New England and impending suspension of Cedric Benson had many predicting no better than a repeat of last season's dismal 4-12 performance.

Palmer has since been traded to Oakland and Ochocinco has been ineffective for the Patriots, while Benson and rookie quarterback Andy Dalton have helped lead the Bengals (6-2) to the top of their division, tied with Baltimore.

Cincinnati has won five straight after beating Tennessee 24-17 last week, marking its longest winning streak since a six-game run in 1988 - the last time the Bengals appeared in the Super Bowl.

There's a long way to go, though, before Cincinnati starts talking about reaching that level.

"Our goals are the same - trying to win the AFC North and nothing less than the playoffs," defensive tackle Domata Peko, who is helping anchor the Bengals' fourth-ranked defense allowing 301.3 yards per game, told the team's official website.

"That's what our goals have been coming into the season and we just have to keep things rolling. There's nothing else we want to do but make the playoffs and take it from there."

Dalton has experienced some growing pains but has been an adequate replacement for Palmer, throwing for 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He went 22 for 39 for 217 yards and three TDs last week, while Benson added 78 yards on 20 carries after serving a one-game suspension in the Bengals' 34-12 win over Seattle on Oct. 30.

Cincinnati's offense hasn't exactly been explosive - it ranks 22nd averaging 316.3 total yards - and it's sure to be tested in the next four games, including two against Pittsburgh (6-3).

The Steelers, who have won seven of the last nine meetings, rank third in the NFL in total defense allowing 280.2 yards per game. Cincinnati plays at Baltimore on Nov. 20 and hosts Cleveland on Nov. 27 before traveling to Pittsburgh on Dec. 4.

"It's a street fight," said left tackle Andrew Whitworth, who caught a 1-yard touchdown pass in a 23-7 loss to the Steelers in the most recent meeting Dec. 12. "It's a football game, but it's like you're meeting somebody in the school parking lot. That's what it is. It's football, but it's a fight at the same time."

Pittsburgh, which is tied with Miami for last in the league with four takeaways, allowed a 13-play, 92-yard drive in the final 2 1/2 minutes of a 23-20 loss to Baltimore last Sunday night, giving up a touchdown pass with eight seconds remaining.

The loss snapped Pittsburgh's four-game winning streak, and the 356 yards allowed were the most since giving up 385 to Baltimore in a season-opening 35-7 loss Sept. 11.

"We lost a very tough, close ballgame, highly contested," coach Mike Tomlin said. "Hopefully we will grow and learn from it. I know those will be our intentions. I truly believe that it will strengthen us moving forward."

Though the Steelers have had success against the Bengals in recent seasons, their meetings have been tight. Prior to Pittsburgh's victory last December, the previous three games were decided by six points or fewer, with Cincinnati winning two.

"Really, when you think about it, the last couple of years, the ball has ended up in their hands inside the 10-yard line or so, to win it at the very end," Tomlin said. "We were fortunate enough to make a play a year ago (in a 27-21 win Nov. 8, 2010). We weren't the year before that (when the Bengals threw a touchdown pass with 14 seconds remaining to win 23-20 on Sept. 27, 2009)."

Ben Roethlisberger has averaged 352.0 yards while throwing six touchdowns over his last three games, though he hasn't had similar success in recent meetings with Cincinnati.

He hasn't thrown for more than 280 yards while tossing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a 79.7 passer rating over the last 10 matchups. The Bengals have allowed eight passing touchdowns this season, tied for third-fewest in the NFL.

Cincinnati has the league's second-best run defense allowing 84.5 yards per game, while Pittsburgh ranks sixth giving up 95.6.

The Steelers have shut down Benson through most of his career, holding him to 3.3 yards per carry and two touchdowns in six matchups.

Pittsburgh hopes linebackers LaMarr Woodley and James Farrior can return from injuries this week, while Cincinnati linebacker Rey Maualuga said he expects to play despite an injured ankle which has kept him out of the last three games.

Notes: Steelers impressed by rookie duo; Rey ready; Dunlap on side

The Bengals rookie tandem of Andy Dalton and A.J. Green have hooked up for four touchdowns this season, and it’s already more than any rookie combination of the last five years in surpassing the Jay Cutler-Tony Scheffler long-ago duo in Denver in 2006.

They’ve got a long way to go to pass the franchise record of Ken Anderson-Isaac Curtis (51), but Dalton and Green have already made an impression on Steelers safety Ryan Clark as he gets ready for his first meeting with them Sunday (1 p.m.-Cincinnati’s Local 12) at Paul Brown Stadium.

(And, by the way, Clark’s conference call with the Cincinnati media Wednesday shows how the DNA of this rivalry seems to have changed. Perhaps not as trashy.)

“I think he's extremely composed, goes through his progressions well,” Clark said of Dalton. “I also think they're calling a very intelligent game for him, obviously leading with the run. I think he really trusts his receivers—A.J. But the biggest thing you see is the team believes in him, they believe in his leadership. He has great moxie for a young quarterback and he's doing an extremely good job for those guys.”

Green and Simpson are trying to do what Chad Ochocinco couldn’t ever do against a Dick LeBeau defense: log a 100-yard game.

“I think the thing you're impressed about the most is his ability to catch the ball in traffic,” Clark said of Green. “You look at the flag route he catches in end zone against the Indianapolis Colts; the guy is right up on him. Also going in traffic and catching the ball and catching the ball on slants and being able to run. So he's the complete receiver. I actually talked to our wide receivers coach about him last year when he was in school and he was just saying how he was NFL ready last year in college. So he's a guy who has all the attributes and all the characteristics of these great receivers from years past, but he's doing it with his own flair.”

RIVERS CLOCK: The Bengals started the clock ticking Wednesday on outside linebacker Keith Rivers’s three-week window on the physically unable to perform list with a wrist injury, but head coach Marvin Lewis indicated at his Wednesday news conference that he’s not ready to return to practice yet. After the three weeks are up, the club either has to put Rivers on the active roster, put him on season-ending injured reserve, or release him.

He says he’s ready to play but it is up to the coaches. All three were listed as limited, as well as right tackle Andre Smith (toe), wide receiver Andre Caldwell (groin), and outside linebacker Thomas Howard (knee).

Maualuga has missed three games with his severely sprained ankle and he’s about done with all that. He’s taking it slowly. He ran on it Monday and he went through individual drills Wednesday and he’s hoping he’ll be able to convince the coaches by Friday he’s ready. He thinks he is.

“My mind will tell me one thing but my ankle will tell me another. I just want to make sure I come in at the right time and not get any setbacks with my ankle,” Maualuga said. “And so, it felt good on Monday, took Tuesday off from being on the field. Had a little walkthrough (Wednesday morning), it felt good. I mean, the coaches will take care of me and limit what I do to any Wednesday and hopefully by Saturday I will be full speed and ready to go.”

Maualuga has been watching and is thrilled the Bengals have won all three in his absence, but he’s ready to get back in any role.

“One, it totally sucks, watching from the sidelines,” he said. “Other half of things, it is just good to see the guys pull through and play great football and be very consistent week in and week out. You stand there and watch and it makes it seem, you know, do they really need you back. You know? I don’t know. I just hope to come back to practice and wherever they fill me in I’ll go. Special teams or backup row. We’ll see. Happy to be back and happy to be able to be out there with the guys.”

SLANTS AND SCREENS

» Dunlap would love to play and not just because it’s the Steelers. The right tackle that he would be lined up against is a friend and former college teammate at Florida, Marcus Gilbert. And his workout partner in the offseason was Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey, another Florida teammate.

» Bengals running back Cedric Benson is still trying to get his arms around splitting carries with Bernard Scott. But in the spirit of this new egoless team spirit, he didn’t elaborate Wednesday when asked if he thought the running game was more in sync last Sunday in Tennessee.

“It’s tough for me to comment on that; things are a little bit different this season,” Benson said. “We’re doing a lot more rotating, so I can’t really address the consistency. Whether it’s there, not there, when it’s there when it’s not there. I just try to be as consistent as I can be.”

» Clark has seen what everybody else has seen from the Bengals this season. They look to be revived by youth and the flushing of the locker room. The talent, he said, had always been there.

“You are shocked in the way or you are impressed in the way that your go-to receiver can be a rookie, your starting quarterback can be a rookie, all of the offseason turmoil goes on and they're able to overcome it,” Clark said. “I think the big thing is once those things were handled, once they knew Carson (Palmer) wasn't going to start, once you get Ochocinco out, I think it became Marvin Lewis's team and he's been doing a great job leading them. The defense, which was very good, last year, is very good once again under Zim. You're just impressed with what they're able to do but not surprised because you always knew they had talent, they just had to get things together.”

The Bengals went inside Paul Brown Stadium to work on the FieldTurf in the rain Wednesday.
