how good of a DC was he at OU? And was he successful because of him or the talent he had?

I have wondered those things myself. The responses I got were that the defense has not been the same since he left. And he has done a good job of improving the D at Arizona.

Even if it was the athletes (and no scheme will be good without good athletes playing in it) he should have the same quality or better as what he had in Oklahoma.

Yep. That's one of the things I like about bringing in Urban. You can put together a great team just recruiting Ohio, but Meyer will take it national. That should put us up with the SEC elites in a short period of time.

Iowa State OC/QB's coach Tom Herman has been hired as the QB's coach. Prior to Iowa State:
In two seasons with Rice, Herman’s offenses re-wrote the school record book (nearly 50 records were broken) and helped Rice win 10 games in 2008, including the school’s first bowl game since 1954. The Owls improved their win total by seven (3 in 2007 to 10 in 2008) – the best mark in the nation – during his tenure.

As a team, the Owls ranked in the Top 10 nationally in 2008 for passing offense , scoring offense and total offense. Rice was seventh nationally in first downs and 12th in third-down conversion percentage.
Good hire.

Looks like Stoops might not happen, but I'd have no problem staying with Heacock and Fickell.

Gotta get Studwara in though.

I guess that means it's not looking good for Studwara. We definitely need an upgrade at O-line coach. Bolman has been awful.

Ohio State football: Meyer’s 2012 class has shot at top 10

Coach does quick work to upgrade recruiting outlook

That Urban Meyer would prove a crack recruiter at Ohio State should surprise no one.

A tireless recruiter with an almost unmatched resume at a traditional power figured to be a formidable force, especially considering he’s back in his home state.

So when he was hired on Nov. 28 as Ohio State’s coach, it was expected Meyer would be able to salvage what had been an underwhelming recruiting class. But he’s on pace to do far more than salvage.

Before Meyer’s hiring, Ohio State ranked outside of the top 20 in recruiting rankings. Now they are poised for a possible top-10 finish. Already, Scout.com ranks the Buckeyes with the eighth-best class. Rivals.com has them at No. 13. MaxPreps.com has Ohio State at No. 7, with an “up” arrow for good measure.

“I’m not surprised that he’s started so quickly and that there’s been a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic said. “I am a little surprised at just how quickly immediate results have taken place.”

Just this week, Ohio State got two elite players to flip their previous commitments to Big Ten rivals — defensive linemen Tommy Schutt (Penn State) and Se’Von Pittman (Michigan State).

The Buckeyes also got a recommitment from blue-chip running back Bri’onte Dunn of Canton GlenOak, who was flirting with Michigan and was scheduled to take an official visit to Ann Arbor this weekend. Last week, the Canton Repository reported that Dunn had serious reservations about playing in a spread offense, which Meyer uses.

But a home visit by Meyer on Tuesday evidently erased any concerns.

“What surprised me was (Dunn) didn’t even bother officially visiting Michigan, which was his plan,” Kurelic said. “It tells you what a great job Urban Meyer did in convincing him he would use his talents to the best of Bri’onte’s ability and for the Ohio State program.”

Trying to lure players who have announced commitments elsewhere might cause some to tsk-tsk, but it has become commonplace.

“Everyone tries to do it. Very few are successful,” CBS Sports Network recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. “Urban is successful. When he was at Florida, he took players away from everybody. That’s the nature of recruiting nowadays. Kids commit early and want to get wooed by other schools. Urban is a great wooer.”

Lemming has known Meyer for almost 20 years.

“He’s a bulldog, he’s personable, he’s smart and he’s relentless,” Lemming said.

Last week, Lemming was with a New Jersey high school coach who said he had just gotten off the phone with Meyer, even though Ohio State isn’t recruiting any of his players this year.

“Urban called him just to say hi and renew old acquaintances,” Lemming said. “That’s going the extra mile. Most guys don’t do that. I would imagine he’s called hundreds of guys like that. (The coach) felt special because Urban called him.

“Even though he makes a lot of money and has a big name, he has not let that go to his head as far as recruiting. He still puts in the recruiting time and effort like he was a MAC coach.”

Kurelic said Meyer has been talking about lofty goals in his living-room pitch to recruits.

“One thing he is definitely selling to recruits is that he has big things planned for Ohio State,” he said. “He’s not telling them, ‘We’re going to win a Big Ten championship.’ He’s not even telling them, ‘We’re going to win a national championship.’ He’s telling them he has plans to win multiple national championships at Ohio State.”

Kurelic said Meyer has gotten a huge assist in his recruiting from Luke Fickell, who will return to being an assistant after the Gator Bowl.

“He got Urban Meyer up to speed on the guys they had relationships with,” Kurelic said. “I think he’s been an invaluable person.”

Ohio State is in the mix with some remaining top prospects, but with only a handful of scholarships left to give, the Buckeyes have a limited ceiling for what they can accomplish this year.

In 2012, Kurelic and Lemming said, all bets are off.

“Next year, no doubt he’ll be fighting for No. 1,” Lemming said.

Rumors are Notre Dame RB coach Tim Hinton is expected to join Urban Meyer's staff in some capacity. It is not clear if he will be the RB coach with Drayton staying at WR, or if Drayton moves to RB (his former position under Meyer) and Hinton coaching WRs.

I would post a link, but it wouldn't do you any good if you are not a paid subscriber to the site.

New Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer has added Mickey Marotti to his staff as assistant athletic director for football sports performance.

Marotti's responsibilities will primarily include running the football program's strength and conditioning program.

"I believe the strength staffs that Mickey has led have been the best staffs in college football," Meyer said. "He is the best there is at developing physically and mentally tough football players."

Marotti will leave the University of Florida where he's been employed since 2005 and most recently served as the Gators' director of sports performance.

Meyer and Marotti first met when the two were graduate assistants at OSU in 1987. They also worked together at the University of Cincinnati and Notre Dame where Marotti led the schools' strength and conditioning programs.

When Meyer became Florida's head coach in 2005, Marotti was one of his first hires.

During his seven years at Florida, he helped mold 22 All-Americans and eight first-round NFL draft choices.

Marotti is one of 100 strength trainers that have a master of strength and conditioning, which is considered the highest honor in the profession.

Known for innovative training techniques, Marotti has had players carry rocks, flip heavy tires, and start workouts at midnight.

Meyer said he trusts Marotti and his methods.

"There are times in the year when the strength staff has more contact with the team than the coaching staff," Meyer said, "and I have complete trust in Mickey Marotti's abilities to prepare our student-athletes to be the strongest, fastest and mentally toughest football players they can be."

Marotti will step into his new role on Jan. 2 after OSU returns from their Gator Bowl matchup against Florida.

Jerry Emig, associate director for athletic communications, said the details of Marotti's contract, including his salary, are not yet available.

Eric Lichter, director of football performance at OSU, and Troy Sutton, OSU's coordinator of strength and conditioning, previously worked to design OSU's football strength and conditioning program.

Lichter made $151,860 during 2010 and Sutton made $72,804, according to The Collegiate Times.

Ohio State football: Meyer gets Buckeyes’ attention right away

By Tim May
The Columbus DispatchFriday December 16, 2011 5:43 AM

If coach Urban Meyer sought to make his first impression a memorable one with Ohio State’s football players, he succeeded.

The players had heard rumors concerning Meyer, who won two national championships at Florida, but it was never a sure thing until he walked through the door of the team meeting room on Nov. 28.

“It was kind of like, ‘Wow, this is really happening.’ ” sophomore lineman Jack Mewhort said yesterday. “It was really cool, just because you know what he’s done, which everybody respects everywhere he goes.”

And immediately, he said, Meyer set the tone.

“The first thing he said was, ‘Everybody sit up,’ so you know he’s all business, which is good to see,” Mewhort said. “I’m really excited to get things started with him.”

But for Mewhort, a sophomore guard, and the other underclassmen, the real coaching change will not occur until after the Gator Bowl on Jan. 2.

Luke Fickell, the coach since Jim Tressel was forced to resign on May 30, will guide the team through the bowl game against Florida before becoming defensive coordinator under Meyer. For now, Meyer’s duties are limited to recruiting, putting together a staff and, well, making first impressions.

“He’s an intense guy — that’s the first thing that I thought of when he came in and talked to us,” junior fullback Zach Boren said. “He said he expects the best out of us each and every day, and he’s going to push us to the fullest.”

For the bowl game, they are being pushed by the same coaching staff that herded them through the regular season, except for safeties coach Paul Haynes. He left over the weekend to become defensive coordinator at Arkansas.

“I think we’re having our best practices of the year so far,” said junior defensive tackle John Simon, named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press earlier this week. “There’s a lot of excitement, a lot of passion, great competition out there between the offense and the defense. We’re getting after it pretty good.”

Although outsiders might be surprised to hear that, Simon said: “I think we’ve got a close-knit group of guys and coaching staff. We’re fired up for this game. It’s a big bowl game for us. And to play a great team like Florida, it’s going to be a big challenge for us.”

When asked whether he noticed any Meyer influence in the past few weeks on the way things are done, Simon said, “I have not.”

Speaking of staff

Mickey Marotti has been named assistant athletic director for football sports performance, where he will oversee strength and conditioning, effective after the bowl game. Marotti was with Meyer first as graduate assistants at Ohio State in 1987 and then at Notre Dame, when Meyer was an assistant coach in the 1990s. He was one of the first hires Meyer made at Florida in 2005.

Marotti served there until a couple of weeks ago, when Meyer’s successor, Will Muschamp, revealed that Marotti had left for Ohio State. Meyer evidently made hiring Marotti a priority.

“I believe the strength staffs that Mickey has led have been the best staffs in college football,” Meyer said. “He is the best there is at developing physically and mentally tough football players.”
