Scout.com is reporting Urban Meyer has agreed to coach OSU for 7 years, $35 million. If true, whoa.

Ok never mind. Joe Reedy retweeted it so I thought it was true but turns out this is fake. If anyone wants to delete topic they can.

Asked OSU source about Urban rumor. Told "Nothing to it." I will add in that I take that as nothing to it at this time.

not sure what to think about it. Haven't seen the original tweet, but I've also yet to see any credible evidence that its not true. I'd think it be on scout.com's website if true though.

The Meyer stuff seems legit actually. There was a flight from Gainesville to Ohio State, and theyre reporting they met. Urban Meyer also met with Arizona this week and turned that offer down, not sure if anyone had heard that already or not but I think this rumor has some legs to it based on the things i've read. 11 warriors which is a reliable Ohio State site also reported the deal is 99.7% done.

I did hear about the Arizona meeting, so it seems he's interested in coaching again.

well, now you have this. I've heard of this site and seen things from it, but have no idea of its credibility. The Herbstreit part leads me to beleive its false.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes: Putting the rumors in perspective - Doug Lesmerises' Buckeye Blog

Published: Friday, November 18, 2011, 3:47 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In the last 40 years, nine college coaches have won national titles and, at some point, gone on to coach another college program:

• Johnny Majors at Pitt in 1976, went to Tennessee the next year

• Danny Ford at Clemson in 1981, left Clemson eight years later, wound up at Arkansas in 1993

• Howard Schnellenberger at Miami in 1983, left for a proposed gig in the USFL that fell through, landed at Louisville in 1985, then made several other stops

• Lou Holtz at Notre Dame in 1988, then after leaving South Bend and broadcasting for two years, took over at South Carolina in 1999

• Dennis Erickson at Miami won titles in 1989 and 1991, then while mixing in two stops in the NFL, coached at Oregon State, Idaho and now at Arizona State

• Bobby Ross at Georgia Tech in 1990, later took over the San Diego Chargers and Detroit Lions and finished his career at Army.

• Steve Spurrier at Florida in 1996, tried the NFL with the Washington Redskins, now back at South Carolina

* Larry Coker at Miami in 2001, after being fired at Miami after the 2006 season, landed at Texas-San Antonio

• Nick Saban at LSU in 2003, left after one more season for the Miami Dolphins, then back to Alabama in 2007 and won a title there in 2009

And now, maybe Urban Meyer.

As soon as Meyer stepped away from Florida after last season, following national titles in 2006 and 2008, he became a logical candidate as the next coach of the Buckeyes. If Meyer was ever going to coach again in college, only Ohio State and Notre Dame fit his profile, personally and professionally, as logical next steps.

At the time Meyer left, both schools had head coaches. Several weeks later, the tattoo scandal became public that eventually brought down Jim Tressel and created an almost too ideal situation for Meyer.

Here's what I know, for the moment:

• No one has written a story saying Urban Meyer has signed a contract to be the next head coach at Ohio State. Friday afternoon, Eleven Warriors, which is the best Ohio State blog going, posted a good breakdown of where it stands on the story. Previously, Eleven Warriors had written on Twitter that it has multiple sources saying Meyer has agreed to a deal, and they are 99.7 percent confident of that. Eleven Warriors has been on top of some other OSU stories in the past.

• Several Ohio State websites that cover the team thoroughly and have sources in and around the program - like BuckeyeSports.com (which kickstarted the Meyer conversation with information posted on a message board by a site insider), BuckeyeGrove.com and Bucknuts.com - have discussed the Meyer topic on their message boards and believe he will be the next Ohio State head coach. None have said the deal is 100 percent finalized. The intent here is to credit their work without stealing it.

• Other false rumors on Twitter - involving specific money amounts - were made up by someone and then passed along by at least one supposedly reputable member of the national media. As Meyer rumors exploded on Twitter Thursday night, they led me to tweet that an Ohio State source said there was "nothing to it." I also took that to mean there was nothing to it at this time, as in a deal being done.

• I reported earlier this week that Meyer was at the top of the OSU list along with Luke Fickell and Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. There absolutely was and is mutual interest between Meyer and Ohio State, and the school believed then that if he coached next season, it would be at Ohio State. Lots of people - including his friend and ESPN colleague Chris Spielman - believe Meyer does want to get back into coaching sooner rather than later.

• Ohio State is still waiting on a final ruling from the NCAA, while believing it will not receive a bowl ban and hoping its self-imposed loss of five scholarships, which is based of past precedent, will be enough. Ohio State isn't expecting that ruling before early December, and perhaps mid-December. Even if Ohio State would get a one-year bowl ban, I don't believe that punishment, in and of itself, would be enough to scare off a coach who is otherwise interested.

• Luke Fickell took over a very difficult situation and has, at the very least, succeeded in holding the program together. Regardless of Ohio State's record this season, I believe it would be difficult to pass on a candidate with a resume like Meyer, who is relatively young; an Ohio native with a passion for Ohio State; and a two-time national champion as a head coach. Fickell has those same qualities, without the two national titles.

• If you asked who I believe will be the best Ohio State head coach, it's Urban Meyer. As of right now, that's still only a belief, not a report.

And if it is Meyer, only Saban's arrival at Alabama would match his impact among previous national champions.

Certainly, there are worthy questions, including about the health issues that he said helped drive him away from Florida after last season. One former college coach believes Meyer would be somewhat of a risky hire because of those issues. Others, including former OSU center LeCharles Bentley, have pointed out the more than 30 Florida players arrested during Meyer's six-year tenure. Certainly, he would have to answer some questions about that.

But there's a lot about Meyer to Ohio State that makes sense. And a lot of talk about it.

Rumors among the OSU "insiders" is the announcement happens at halftime of the OSU/Duke basketball game.

Things I have heard indicate it is all but a done deal. I think the only way it does not happen is if OSU gets hammered by the NCAA.

Not sure about Herbie or Fickell on the staff. I don't see Herbie leaving Game Day, and I have heard reports that Fickell, as much as he loves OSU would not stick around if he's not the head coach.

FWIW Herbstreit has said that he wants to coach, and said that he talked about being on Meyers staff at some point if he went back to coaching. It surprised me when I heard it too, because I wouldn't leave Herbies job if I were him, lol. Just saying, it isn't unrealistic that it could happen because I've heard him say it.

Ohio State football: 'I've not been offered any job,' Meyer says

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Urban Meyer would not comment today about a flurry of Internet reports that he has agreed in principle to be the next Ohio State football coach.

Meyer declined an interview request when approached by The Dispatch at Michigan Stadium, where he is serving as an ESPN broadcaster for today’s Big Ten game between Michigan and Nebraska.

Meyer later addressed the OSU rumor during ESPN’s broadcast of the game.

“I’ve not been offered any job and certainly have not accepted any job,” he said.

One report yesterday had Meyer denying that he has a deal with Ohio State.

Another report said that Meyer, one year into his retirement as Florida coach, already has begun putting together a coaching staff, which will include former Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman.

“I was as surprised as anybody else to read it,” said Spielman, an ESPN broadcast partner with Meyer. “I’ve never been approached (by Ohio State) or talked about it. As far as I know, what (Meyer) told me is there’s no deal in place, not for him. That’s what I know.”

Asked whether Meyer has spoken to Ohio State about becoming its coach, Spielman said: “You’ll have to ask him. I don’t know.”

Meyer won two national championships at Florida -- including a 2007 BCS title game win over Ohio State -- and compiled a 65-15 record in six years with the Gators. The Ohio native resigned last year to spend more time with his family.

Speculation about Meyer taking over at Ohio State has reigned since Jim Tressel retired in May and was replaced on an interim basis by Luke Fickell. Tressel quit because of his role in the tattoo scandal that led to an NCAA investigation. OSU is waiting on a final ruling from the NCAA, expected to come in December.

Meyer’s name has also surfaced in reports about who might be Penn State’s next football coach since Joe Paterno was fired last week in the wake of the child sexual abuse scandal involving his former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

"I am very happy with my role at ESPN. I have no plans to return to coaching at this time,” Meyer said in a statement released eight days ago.

The New York Times reported this week that Meyer recently met with Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne to discuss the Wildcats’ job but decided he was not interested. Tim Kish has served as Arizona’s interim coach since Mike Stoops was fired in October after a 1-5 start.

One Internet report said that Meyer, who served as an Ohio State graduate assistant coach in 1986-87, wants Spielman and longtime ESPN analyst and former Buckeyes quarterback Kirk Herbstreit to serve on his coaching staff.

Spielman, however, said today that he has no interest in coaching because of his commitment to being a spokesman and fund-raiser for the Stefanie Spielman Fund For Breast Cancer Research at The James Cancer Hospital at OSU.

Today is the second anniversary of his wife Stefanie Spielman’s death from breast cancer.

“I’ve got too many things going on with fund-raising (to coach),” Spielman said. “I wouldn’t be an effective fund-raiser or an effective dad because of the time commitment in coaching. I serve my university in a better way by doing fund-raising. I have interest in serving Ohio State, but not in (a coaching) capacity.”

Meyer and Spielman have worked together as ESPN broadcast partners all season, although the former Florida coach did not work last week’s Nebraska-Penn State game as scheduled. Instead, Meyer traveled to Cincinnati to attend a memorial service for his father, Urban “Bud” Meyer, who died Nov. 10.

Matter of time IMO.

Not sure if the spread can work in the B10 though. Michigan hasn't really done well since they switched over. Maybe it can. Urban is a good coach though, he will get results.

I dunno about that. Many of the Big Ten teams, including OSU, have been running elements of the spread offense for 2-3 years now.

I don't watch a lot of college football so I'm not sure, but I know Michigan struggled mightily when they transitioned and clearly haven't been where they used to be. OSU could probably do it, because Urban will pull his fair share of recruits, but I just find it hard to believe that you can make the spread work when there is a chance of the last couple of games being in some pretty nasty elements.

I don't much care. I just like Urban. I think he's a good guy.

I think Michigan's struggles had more to do with RichRod being a shit coach and some of his recruits being questionable for playing in the Big 10...

Urban to OSU is done...

I still have it on good authority that he's bringing John Chavis from LSU as his defensive coordinator. Strictly rumor but from a pretty good source. I don't know Meyer's timetable but if LSU is playing in the NC game may affect it. Coordinators leave all the time prior to a bowl game (even NC games) and some even come back just to call the game... just food for thought. Assume Meyer wants his staff filled out well ahead of NSD so he can build a strong class.

The spread would work just fine in the Big Ten... the reason Michigan has / had problems is that RichRod apparently forgot to recruit / build a defense. His offenses could put up 28+ a game easy but his defenses couldn't stop shit.

And, Urban Meyer will recruit some unsavory people... just something that OSU fans will have to get used to as a "cost of winning" type of thing.
