The team waived defensive back Ibraheim Campbell with an injury designation in a corresponding move. The Bengals selected Smith in the sixth round of the 2015 draft. He appeared in 31 games with Cincinnati, making seven tackles, one pass breakup and six special teams tackles. He played three games this season before the Bengals cut him and re-signed him to their practice squad Nov. 7. Campbell has appeared in 37 career games with 11 starts for the Browns. He made 15 tackles, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery in eight games this season. He injured his hamstring in Wednesday’s practice.
sparky151
This seems dumb on the Bengals part. We cut him late enough in the week that he got his game check for Jax. Then when we dump the extra kicker, we should sign him back. But he apparently doesn't want to stay here or we didn't guarantee him a spot when we cut the kicker. So off he goes to Cleveland where he'll probably get more PT.
|Montana Bengal|
We released the other kicker? I thought ours was still hurt and not practicing. Edit...answered my own question "Not practicing for the Bengals today: K Randy Bullock (back), RB Jeremy Hill (ankle), LB Kevin Minter (elbow), CB... espn.com/espn/now?nowId…"

You do realize that practice squad players don't have that option, right? Any team can sign a guy off of your practice squad. Period. The Browns just got there first. Rules prohibit any player under contract from negotiating with any other team. So, Smith would have been unaware that the Browns were even interested. While he could technically refuse to be moved up, why would he be on the PS of a team he doesn't want to play for? You would have to assume that he knew some other team was going to take him (after he's already cleared waivers once) and he refused to be on our roster... But was still willing to do the "work" portion of the NFL week with the team. That's like saying that you're willing to work in Microsoft's mail room, but if they come and offer you the CEO position you're going to be all, "Fuck you Satya, I have a good feeling that pets.com is going to call me tomorrow." "Didn't they tell you they weren't interested just last week?" "God, you're sooooo negative."

But was still willing to do the "work" portion of the NFL week with the team. Uh, you do know this isn't true, right? Smith could have chosen to stay with the Bengals rather than sign with the Browns. When teams need an extra roster spot late in the week, they normally find a guy who will assure them of his return before they cut him. He does have to pass through waivers and Smith did, before he could be signed to the practice squad. But apparently the Bengals didn't do the normal thing and get an assurance from Smith. Or he broke his word but he isn't signing with the Eagles, it's the Browns. It's not unusual for the agent of a player on a team's practice squad to call the team for a counter offer when another team comes calling. Maybe the Bengals told Smith to hit the road but if so, it was dumb.

fredtoast
Yeah, a player can agree to stay on a practice squad instead of signing with another team, but you can't blame Smith for moving up. This just shows how quickly things change in the NFL. The Browns did not want Smith just a few days ago when he cleared waivers. He barely played any snaps at all last year even though we had injuries at safety. They moved Shaw to safety late in the season, but I think Derron may have been hurt himself by then. T-Dub
WTF is going on between these 2 teams lately? It's like they're conducting business through Craigslist ads.
