T-Dub Posted April 27, 2024 Report Posted April 27, 2024 Sounds like he'll make the team as a gunner/special teams guy at least. Simmons had lost a couple of his vets & they've done pretty well drafting DBs.
sparky151 Posted April 28, 2024 Report Posted April 28, 2024 Meh. The preseason projections always assume continued progression. In Newton's case, there was regression so he dropped to day 3. We probably should have picked KAD in the prior round, he's a much better player. It's not clear that Newton will beat out even Allen George.
-GoBengals- Posted April 29, 2024 Report Posted April 29, 2024 not super impressed with the film for whatever reason. minimal expectations but adding a guy is good. we shall see.
sparky151 Posted April 29, 2024 Report Posted April 29, 2024 We certainly need more talent at CB. But Newton is just a guy. That's why they're moving Dax Hill to boundary corner instead of his more natural slot CB position.

sparky151 Posted April 29, 2024 Report Posted April 29, 2024 There are a number of veteran CBs available. Xavien Howard is probably the best known. But we should have just drafted Kris Abrams-Draine in round 4 and waited at TE.

Not sure that Charles Burks is as strong a position coach as some of the ones on the offensive side, but it sounds like he was the one pounding the table for Dax Hill to move to CB. Hope Burks is right when he talks like he feels like he's adding a new 1st round draft choice to his position room. "He can cover anybody on the field. He's a natural cover player," Burks said Monday as the 2024 draft sunk in. "He's got the length to cover bigger targets, short-area quickness to cover space guys. He has the balance to anchor at the top of the route. He's got a lot of the tools that the elite corners around the league have."
sparky151 Posted April 30, 2024 Report Posted April 30, 2024 And yet elite CBs are harder to find and get paid more than free safeties. Bengals have used 2 second round picks for outside corners since drafting Hill. Sounds like the coach is blowing smoke.
