Accorsi: No deal yet

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

LaVar Arrington made his second visit to the Giants yesterday morning. But GM Ernie Accorsi didn't sound like he was expecting the linebacker back for a third.
As reported in yesterday's Daily News, Arrington took his long-awaited physical for the Giants, but according to Accorsi, "nothing has happened in the negotiations." Arrington didn't even come to Giants Stadium after being examined by team doctors in Manhattan.

"He had a physical with us," Accorsi said. "That's all that's taken place.

"If this now triggers another round of hysteria it's going to be inaccurate, just like the last round. Obviously you're not going to even think about a player unless you get a physical examination. So we have that. That has not in any way affected or influenced any supposed negotiations. Nothing's gone on in that front at all."

Accorsi declined to reveal the results of the exam, which undoubtedly centered on Arrington's right knee, which has been surgically repaired twice in the last 20 months. Several sources in Arrington's camp said they expected him to pass.

But even if he did, the Giants still wouldn't sign him unless he dramatically dropped his demand for a deal similar to the seven-year, $54 million contract linebacker Julian Peterson got from Seattle that included $18.5million guaranteed. If he doesn't, the Giants likely will fill their hole at weak-side linebacker in either the first or second round of the NFL draft being held eight days from now.

That possibility is probably why Arrington returned to take a physical that he refused to take when he first visited the Giants on March 11-12. At the moment, the only teams interested in him are the Giants, Packers, Jaguars and Dolphins. If any of those teams find linebackers on draft day, Arrington's market could dramatically decrease.

"Once teams start picking young players at that position I would assume that's going to affect his market," Accorsi said. "So I don't know what their decision-making process is, but we'll go ahead with the draft the same way we always do."
Giants | Poston says deal with Arrington close
Fri, 21 Apr 2006 20:46:37 -0700

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports agent Carl Poston confirmed the New York Giants are close to reaching a contract agreement with free agent LB LaVar Arrington (Redskins). Poston wasn't sure if a deal was going to be completed by Friday night, April 21, but he said negotiations between Arrington and the Giants were close to getting done and should be completed soon. "Antonio Pierce really made a push to get the Giants to bring LaVar to New York," Poston said. "It's a good fit. It would be great to have LaVar in the New York market." Terms of any detail weren't available. The Miami Dolphins had a $5 million a year offer on the table. Arrington was hoping to get a deal in the $7.5 million a year range.
LAVAR, GIANTS CLOSE

By PAUL SCHWARTZ

April 22, 2006 -- The Giants yesterday landed a monstrously big free-agent prize that likely will go down as either a huge coup or a major miscalculation with the ink all but dry on a contract for linebacker LaVar Arrington.
The two sides were closing in on an agreement that would allow Arrington to add his name to a linebacker legacy with the Giants and perhaps jump-start a career that not long ago was believed to be destined for greatness.

Thus ends a six-week odyssey and a protracted period of gamesmanship, with the Giants refusing to significantly up their ante and fully prepared to move forward without Arrington if the price wasn't right.

No terms were immediately available, but the Giants did not come close to matching the seven-year, $54 million package or the $18 million in guaranteed money Julian Peterson, another linebacker represented by the Poston brothers, received from the Seahawks. Arrington was seeking a similar deal.

Instead, the Giants put together a deal that is heavily incentive-laden, allowing Arrington to get paid like a superstar only if he performs like one. That protects the Giants in case Arrington's right knee is not sound or if his best days are behind him.

Arrington fills a gaping void at weak-side linebacker and adds more star power to a defense that already has Pro Bowl ends in likely Hall of Famer Michael Strahan and rising star Osi Umenyiora as well as middle linebacker Antonio Pierce, a former Redskins teammate and close friend of Arrington who campaigned long and hard for his signing.

This move allows the Giants to expand their horizons in next weekend's NFL Draft. The Giants own the 25th overall pick and, without Arrington, would have been forced to hone in on an outside linebacker.

A desire to stay in the NFC East (and face the Redskins twice a year) and play in New York made the Giants a frontrunner to land him. The team brought in Arrington for a visit on March 11 but he refused to take a physical, leaving the Giants wary of the health of his right knee, which needed arthroscopic surgery twice in a 20-month period of 2004 and 2005.

The Giants made an offer, but it was not close to the money Arrington was seeking. That was that until Arrington's camp, with his market drying up, relented and he returned to New York on Thursday to take a physical. That sparked what a team source described as "substantive talks" starting that night and continuing into yesterday.

Outgoing and personable, his status as the most popular player in Washington took a hit when Joe Gibbs returned to coaching and his staff immediately clashed with Arrington, who was considered too much of a freelancer in the defensive system.
Agent: Giants, Arrington close to reaching dealBy John Clayton
ESPN.com

The Giants and former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington are close to a deal that will keep the three-time Pro Bowler in the NFC East, according to Arrington's agent, Carl Poston.

Arrington

Five teams had been in the running for Arrington, but the Giants took a significant step toward getting a deal done Thursday. After Arrington took and passed a physical Thursday, negotiations turned serious and have been ongoing for more than 24 hours.

Poston wasn't sure if a deal was going to be completed by Friday night, but he said negotiations between Arrington and the Giants were close to getting done and should be completed soon.

The Packers, Jaguars, Dolphins and Bengals had also been in the mix. Poston said the Jaguars and Packers made progress with their offers Friday, but the Giants took the lead Friday.

Arrington had hoped to stay in the NFC East in order to play the Redskins two times a year.

"Antonio Pierce really made a push to get the Giants to bring LaVar to New York," Poston said. "It's a good fit. It would be great to have LaVar in the New York market."

Pierce left the Redskins after the 2004 and was an instant star in the Giants defense.

Terms of any detail weren't available. The Dolphins had a $5 million a year offer on the table. Arrington was hoping to get a deal in the $7.5 million a year range.

Woodson

While the Postons -- Kevin and Carl -- were working to complete the deal Friday night between the Giants and Arrington, negotiations for Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson were heating up and there is a chance something could be done this weekend.

The Packers and Bucs have been the most active in trying to recruit Woodson. The Bucs are looking at Woodson as a safety. The Packers want him at cornerback. Other teams have entered the picture, according to Carl Poston, Woodson's agent.

"We're working on Charles and hoping to get something done," Poston said. "Things are picking up."

Woodson and cornerback Ty Law will be the top free agents available once Arrington completes his deal with the Giants. Law has been talking to the Seahawks and several other teams.

The Plot thickens.......

Giants | Team concerned about Arrington's first physical
Sat, 22 Apr 2006 08:51:12 -0700

Vinny DiTrani, of the Bergen Record, reports free agent LB LaVar Arrington (Redskins) refused to take a physical for the New York Giants during his previous visit in March. He instead had his agents send the team a copy of the physical he took with the Miami Dolphins. The results concerned the Giants, which appeared to show a bone-on-bone situation in his right knee. The Giants asked for Arrington to undergo a checkup with them, which one source said was "good enough" to allow talks to continue.

I wouldn't be suprised if Marvin was thinking he will get himself the next Lavar by drafting Thomas Howard

although I would prefer Ernie Sims
